Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

quint - you sound like a finish advert Grin

Catslikehats · 06/12/2011 13:05

My brabantia bin lid has been going through the dishwasher weekly for a bout three years with no ill effect.

Seems perfectly sane to me.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 06/12/2011 13:05

Quint - I agree with you. I wouldn't want bin or potty residue washing back over my plates. Yuk.

And today on dishwasher watch we will be looking at how Finnish tablets will disintegrate your residue.

Kerching!

Catslikehats · 06/12/2011 13:12

And of course I clean out the filter although to be fair even if you don't rinse plates prior to putting them in the dishwasher, a decent dishwasher copes pretty well with all those bits of gunk and will get rid of most of them.

I learnt that from watching an Anthea Turner show and since she has always struck me as a fairly prissy woman, who is extremeley likely to get up tight about cleanliness I am happy to go with if it is good enough for her, it is good enough for me...

waterlego6064 · 06/12/2011 13:16

Just wanted to point out that door handles have far more germs on them than bin lids.

Having said that, bin lids can look very grubby so that sounds a good reason to put them through the dishwasher.

Rhubarbgarden · 06/12/2011 13:16

Fantastic! I can't believe I have never thought of doing this. Thank you MN.

mousysantamouse · 06/12/2011 13:17

yes, waterlego, but my door handles do not smell like the bin lid.

waterlego6064 · 06/12/2011 13:18

The sieve that we used for the pool in our DS's waterbirth went through the dishwasher and is back in the cupboard now for general culinary use.

Is that wrong? It is, isn't it. It was OH's idea.

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:18

My regularly dishwashed bin lid never smells Smile

sprinkles77 · 06/12/2011 13:18

YANBU. I see your bin lids, potties, bits and stirrup irons and raise you the toys DS has shat on in the bath!

waterlego6064 · 06/12/2011 13:19

No indeed mousy. Lots of good reasons to wash bin lids but I was just responding to something someone posted earlier about them being particularly germy. They aren't really.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 13:19

My non-dishwaser-washed lids never smells. Smile

You are all lazy biatches.

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:21

No, not lazy, productive and efficient Smile. There is no virtue whatsoever in prolonging housework!

nevergoogle · 06/12/2011 13:22

i'm a lazy biatch and i dishwasher the bin lid, but not with the dishes, it gets it's own special ride in the dishwasher.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 13:26

ah, like your style nevergoogle!

I have only seen ONE episode of those two women with rubber gloves, going into peoples houses to clean (trinny and susanna?) and in that episode they were very critical of a woman who was washing her animals feeding bowls, and horses stuff in the dishwasher.

So, you are all skunks. Wink But not according to me, of course.

WhereMyMilk · 06/12/2011 13:27

Agree with Quint. Whilst I can see what you mean as it is basically food left overs stuck on the bin...as long as you wash the dishwasher out after

But Aldi , dog shit covered wellies? You have to be kidding me right? So then the water lying in the pump is dog shit water that then washes your plates and stuff. Fucking hell.Shock I really am beyond disgusted with that.

mousysantamouse · 06/12/2011 13:27

I just spat my coffee at the screen @ trinny and susanna in marigolds Xmas Grin

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:28

Those gloved women (not Trinny and Susannah) did absolutely mad things like clean glass shower cubicles with lemon juice and elbow grease.

I though that was about the most archaic and time consuming approach to hygiene that anyone could cook up.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 13:29

I am also productive and efficient. I send my dh out to the garden with a hose and a Cif spray. Grin

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 13:29

I would've thought that anyone on those cleaning programmes wouldn't be known for making sure their dishwashers stayed clean so putting animal dishes was probably a really bad idea in those circumstances.

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:31

I put the bathroom bin (all metal) in the DW every couple of days.

SpagBollyandtheIvy · 06/12/2011 13:33

OMG, the washing up bowl! I hate the slime that builds up on the bottom. Why have I never put this in the dishwasher ???

I feel a bit nervous about putting the potty in, but if it's wiped out first so there are no actual particles of anything, then surely it's ok?

And yes, I clean the filter (very rarely anything in it) and use a cleaning liquid thingy regularly.

Pishtushette · 06/12/2011 13:38

I dedicate this post to my first ever use of .

I would never put toilet seats, potties, dog-poo-covered wellies or my dustbin lid in the dishwasher.

Sometimes there is the odd bit of rice stuck to a plate when it comes out of the dishwasher so I wouldn't be happy with eating from a plate that had been swirled with dog poo water.
