Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

Nothing Sad. There is a crappy room to the side of the kitchen, no plumbing but I could maybe put pipes through the wall. I call it my back passage .

That will be my NY resolution.

duke748 · 06/12/2011 17:48

For those who want a dishwasher but don't have room... I recently bought a table top one. Cost me £40 to get a local handyman to cut a hole in the worktop and plumb it in.

Excellent! And you can still fit bin lids in it!

oldmerryolesoul · 06/12/2011 17:53

I put all sorts in the DW though would draw the line at dog poo encrusted stuff as all the water isnt emptied at the end

I did my toothbrush mug and Mooncup cup (same blue plastic design). Of course I didnt know which was which but tell myself they were sterilised

thisisyesterday · 06/12/2011 19:28

ugh, dp told me about this thread and i thought he was making it up!!!

i seem to have fallen into some parallel universe where putting your bin and dog shit (wtaf???) in your DISHWASHER is ok!! ugh, ugh and thrice ugh

ok, if you keep your bin really spotless in general then i guess i can understand that.
but dog poo??? really???????

i would never even clean dog poo in the house, let alone in the dishwasher.

can anyone tell me though, what temp dishwashers get up to?
not all bacteria are killed from high temps either

thebigkahuna · 06/12/2011 19:31

Yuck, and NO to dog poo.

I was under the impression that a dishwasher sterilises things but I have no idea who true that is.

Can I just say though, I may well be a minger, as I NEVER wash my bin lid.

However, our council does a food waste green bin thing so the only things that go in either the recycling bin or the black bag bin don't have anything minging on them.

I wash tins etc before they go in the recycling bin. In the dishwasher

Not many things make my jaw drop but dog shit and potties in the dishwasher! Shock how rank? I don't think I'll ever be able to eat or drink in anyone else's house for fear of what they've had in their dishwasher. Might try a few of the other non gross items in though.

LucyGoose · 06/12/2011 21:09

Still feeling sick about wellies with dog sh*t going in the dishwasher!

I have put the chickens water and feed dispensers in the dishwasher.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

thisisyesterday · 06/12/2011 21:15

ahh now my washing up bowl I DO put in the dishwasher. lol

SpagBollyandtheIvy · 06/12/2011 21:22

My dishwasher will go up to 75. That combined with the detergent will be pretty effective at killing germs. All the stuff I read said it was fine for a bf baby to sterilise breast pump bits, bottles etc in dishwasher as it gets hot enough. Obviously not at the same time as the bin lid though :o

WhereMyMilk · 06/12/2011 21:28

My dishwasher only goes to 65' so no way hot enough to be completely sterile and certainly not hot enough to get rid of dog shit form wellies (still cannot get over how disgusting this is that someone would do it)

PeppaPigHostage · 06/12/2011 21:34

Does anyone know if this Ikea bin and its lid are ok to put in the DW?

Morloth · 06/12/2011 21:37

My new dishwasher has the cutlery drawer at the top, you would not BELIEVE the amount of stuff I can now get in the bottom.

If I take the middle shelf out, not only can I do the bin lid, I can do the whole bin!

I think I probably draw the line at dog poo wellies, though have run potties through.

thebigkahuna · 06/12/2011 21:37

Yeah, seriously aldiwhore - you can't go near dog poo without being phyiscally sick, yet you'd happily put dog poo inside your dishwasher?

What the?

I mean, really?

Heleninahandcart · 06/12/2011 21:45

Washing up bowl always goes in the dishwasher, with dishcloths, brush etc. Toothbrush mugs, anything a bit grim basically.

Has anyone mentioned the entire shelving system for the fridge? I put the lot in and it comes out dry and ready to put back rather than dripping all over the worktop.

SpagBollyandtheIvy · 06/12/2011 21:48

Mine too morloth, I love the fact that even giant pots now fit in. Pots, not potties.

Sibling4 · 06/12/2011 21:56

Now then, has anyone tried putting a mason pearson hairbrush in a dw? I've mistreated mine, went to buy a new one but they're £50

I fear it might come apart but it really is beyond a scrub under the tap

Bert2e · 06/12/2011 22:13

Washing up bowl, bin lid, bin and Mooncup all go through the dishwasher in this house! I think the sterilisation thing comes from the US where dishwashers wash at a higher temperature than they do here.

thebigkahuna · 06/12/2011 22:14

Mooncup.

Sweet baby Jesus.

Bert2e · 06/12/2011 22:16

[shrug] It's washed before it goes in!

Fanty · 06/12/2011 22:25

gawd, sorry i think that´s revolting...howEVER - every single component of my fridge goes in....

Get0rf · 06/12/2011 23:33

Do the shitty wellies go in with all the dirty dishes or on their own?

Actually I don't think that matters tbh.

troisgarcons · 06/12/2011 23:36

Yoo-Hoo - dishwashers wash at 65 degrees - not boiling point .... just thought Id mention it for the people who put odd things in ....was it this forum or one of the eBay ones where some woman washed her toothbrush (yes her toothbrush) and the bog seat?

FunkyChicken · 06/12/2011 23:42

Plastic kitchen compost caddy, plastic drainers for cutlery and plate rack from the sink draining board all go in our dishwasher (not all at once!). No ill effects to the items to date!
