Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

piglet - hmmm, i think dh has some white spirit in the garage. sure it won't damage my bin lid as the stuff disolves rubber gloves?

Latex rubber perishes when in contact with oil. White spirit does not attack plastic.

After this thread I am not eating in anyone's house ever again Shock

sheeplikessleep · 08/12/2011 22:20

trouble is piglet, my obvious enjoyment i've gleaned from the discovery of popping the bin lid in the dishwasher demonstrates i am one for an easy life and i urr on the side of laziness.

i think i'm going to try the mayo trick first. heck, the fridge is right next to the bin, so that has to be the strategy requiring the least effort (in contrast, white spirit requires finding it in the pit hole of my dh's garage! that could take some time).

but i will go for the white spirit if the easier and quicker routes of mayo / vaseline tactic are unsuccessful. thank you for the tip though!

oven shelves and oven top stuff in dishwasher with mr muscle and a dishwasher tablet, fingers crossed it all goes well.

specialagentmeh · 08/12/2011 23:49

Absolutely disgusting to put dog poo wellies in dishwasher. Ditto toilet brush, potties etc. Bin lid I wouldn't be too keen either, though not as bad. Brilliant for cleaning fridge shelves/ inserts though

Gay40 · 08/12/2011 23:52

If it fits in and it won't melt, it goes in the dishwasher.
Same with the washing machine. I am glad someone else recognises Darwinism. And I'm going to try all these other things when I get home.

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 00:03

my dishwasher does bath toys and the washing machine drawer. I agree with the people saying if stuff doesn't survive, in the bin it goes :o
I have a dilemma, we chucked our bin in the garage as it got so grubby, quick wipe didn;'t seem to help much but I am so tempted to resurrect it in the dishwasher. hmm

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 00:05

never considered grill pan though - trying that tomorrow
We may actually be able to USE it again, after about 3 years (no exaggeration)

ChristmasRose · 09/12/2011 00:06

I never thought of doing this before.

Looks like Im adding "put bin lid in dishwasher" onto my to-do list tommorrow!

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 00:13

Bramshott, wouldn't a mooncup fly around inside, and you'd find it filled with water on the floor of the dishwasher? I just stick mine in a mug of hot milton after the last use where it stays until next time I need it usually

LovesBloominChristmas · 09/12/2011 06:56

Bin in the dishwasher I can live with that, but rubbing mayo on things to get them clean? What is wrong with you? Mayo is only good for one thing.... Chips Xmas Grin

Bramshott · 09/12/2011 11:54

Stealth - not if I ram it into the cutlery holder Grin! I was going to put it in last night but I thought DH might not be too keen. I'll do it when he's out!

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 16:10

Well I have put the rubber bath mat in the dishwasher - will be interesting to see how it comes out! The sucker side is always a bit grubby, and jif can't seem to shift it.
It's gone in with the bath toys, the washing up bowl I use to soak my feet and the mug I use to sterilise my mooncup. I am having a sorting out day.

Bert2e · 09/12/2011 17:20

My Mooncup goes in on the top shelf and seems to stay there OK - I do mine when DH isn't looking too :-)

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 17:22

wow, sparkly bathmat :)

nevergoogle · 09/12/2011 21:58

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 22:00

StealthPolarBear · 09/12/2011 22:11

nevergoogle · 09/12/2011 22:14
