Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

Bastard bin wouldn't fit in (lid attached), so I bleached it in the shower...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterilization_%28microbiology%29

See under 'cleaning methods that do not achieve sterilisation'

mousysantamouse · 07/12/2011 17:36

well, the article also mentiones temperature.
our has a hot cycle @ 90 degrees, which is hot enough to sterilise things.

cleoismycat · 07/12/2011 18:46

I have the cleanest bin lid in the land. Just took it out of the dishwasher for the first but certainly not the last time. Brabantia brushed steel. no damage, even the 'do not put in the dishwasher' sticker is still intact. Don't care if it isn't sterile - looks pretty.

SauvignonBlanche · 07/12/2011 18:57

Oh no you don't - I have the cleanest bin lid in the land! Xmas Wink

cleoismycat · 07/12/2011 18:58

I might eat my dinner off mine....

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2011 18:59

Amazing results here too. Our lid looks brand new. Even the bits of gunk that I assumed were rust Blush have come clean. It didn't come this clean when I washed it by hand.

The stickers were pretty much peeling here, so I've taken them off. Only thing is now I'm left with sticker residue that will attract stuff now, so any hints or tips to clean off the sticker residue and I'm all ears Grin

Sometimes my dog gets the DC's tea and ends up with sweetcorn poo.

Imagine doggy sweetcorn poo, washed in the dishwasher. Where would it end up? In the filter.

Washing your dishes with sweetcorn that's been through a doggy's digestive tract.

No. Just no.

My children already have...

londonone · 07/12/2011 19:04

sheeplikessleep - you need sticky stuff remover from lakeland 'tis genius

sheeplikessleep · 07/12/2011 19:24

thanks londonone - i shall look it up! cheers

notnowImreading · 07/12/2011 20:50

Do you put a tablet in with the mr muscle for oven shelves or just mr muscle?

Rub with white spirit on kitchen roll. The smell lingers so wear plastic gloves if you have them. Not rubber gloves as they will dissolve.

It's quite useful to keep a small bottle handy, for grease stains, shoe polish on carpet, various cleaning jobs. Keep it away from rubber or soft plastics including carpet backing as it will perish and crumble.

5ofus · 08/12/2011 15:45

Today I have dishwasher my bin lid and componow and they both survived Grin

Such is the power of mumsnet.

Bonsoir · 08/12/2011 15:46

5ofus - but is your bin lid rejuvenated? Mere survival is not the goal here!

sheeplikessleep · 08/12/2011 15:55

piglet - hmmm, i think dh has some white spirit in the garage. sure it won't damage my bin lid as the stuff disolves rubber gloves?

ZillionChocolate · 08/12/2011 16:20

peachyicecream is a genius. I'm looking forward to putting the washing machine drawer in there next time it gets manky. (How can something that only comes into contact with detergent and clean water be some grim?)

Loulousmummy · 08/12/2011 16:43

I put a tablet in with the mr muscle and the oven shelves.

To remove the sticky residue - mayo! (then another cycle in the dishwasher to get rid of the mayo!)

5ofus · 08/12/2011 17:13
Blush

I pushed send before proof reading. Should have read bin lid and compost caddy and yes not only did they both survive but my bin lid is shining Grin

Mine's a Brabantia too.

Only wish I'd thought about sticking the detergent drawer in too.

sheeplikessleep · 08/12/2011 17:21

Mayo, seriously? Xmas Grin

PreviouslyonLost · 08/12/2011 17:24

I ALWAYS put bin lid in dishwasher...it's a rank job by hand in the sink. Now tempted to experiment with different items after reading above posts Grin

tottiesfortea · 08/12/2011 17:44

Personally, I think as long as the dish washer is put a clean cycle regularly theres nowt wrong in any of the stuff thats been posted on here :)

Loulousmummy · 08/12/2011 17:50

Yes mayo, you have to rub it in though. Hairspray takes the stickiness off but not the residue.

My detergent drawer is going in next. Looking for something else to join it hahaha

Loulousmummy · 08/12/2011 17:52

Vaseline and baby oil work too, don't know why mayo was the first I thought of!

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 08/12/2011 20:26

I am thinking Brabantia is the Mners bin of choice, mine is the curved 40L in brushed steel. I also have a bb tin opener and it is fantastic had it a year and it has survived. We kill tin openers
