Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

I thought it is ok, if you put it in on its own or with other 'dirty' things, such as compost caddies. I would run the dishwasher on empty with a tablet immediately after though, before using it again.

Bonsoir - logically I think you're probably right. Especially as your bin lid is washed so regularly it won't be that dirty anyway. But I just couldn't do it and think it could well cause probs for people who are less careful.

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 14:44

Nothing in my house is ever very dirty apart from the DSSs' rooms. But I still think that DWs have amazing germ busting properties for dirtier families than my own!

I also put the detergent drawer of the washing machine which gets all gunky and yucky, into the dishwasher.

apocalypsedreams · 06/12/2011 14:51

Wow - I'm really getting an education here of all the things you can stick in your dishwasher, I had no idea!
The most adventurous thing I have ever stuck in mine was a scrubby sponge - and that was by mistake. Hmm

Ivytheterrible · 06/12/2011 14:58

I stick in plastic toys bought at the car boot & charity shop. Did a huge box of duplo last week.

Great way of cleaning lego and duplo after it's been dropped down the loo without having to use a bloody toothbrush to get into those little holes.

You can also steam cook a whole salmon very effectively in the dishwasher too.
Not at the same time as the bin lid, I hasten to add.

I put everything possible through the dishwasher, pedal bins, washing up bowls, brushes, mop heads, washing up scrubbers, but not with food items, and do it on the 70 degree cycle.

Also run empty to clean it - don't use bleach after a disaster, but use Finish cleaners.

Half a cut up lemon in the dishwasher makes it smell lovely too.

Here endeth the lesson on dishwashers.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 15:08

Wow. I really did not know it was possible to cook food in your dishwasher! Shock

Poor salmon! A bit washed out, eh?

frumpet · 06/12/2011 15:10

Another here who puts stirrup irons and bits from bridle in , come out lovely Grin

aldiwhore · 06/12/2011 15:16

I regularly put my fake plants in the dishwasher too... I loathe fake plants, but I'm also not very good at keeping real ones alive, my mum bought me some gorgeous plastic plants.

Toys, shoes, in they go.

I am SO going to cook our Christmas salmon in the dishwasher!! Xmas Smile

Bramshott · 06/12/2011 15:22

I have been wanting to ask for a while if I can put my mooncup in the dishwasher instead of boiling it to sterilse. Does anyone know??

Byeckersitsapropercrimbolike · 06/12/2011 15:39

The bin it is then! :(

squeakytoy · 06/12/2011 15:49

It's no wonder we have so many water shortages with some of you lot!! Grin

DonkeyTeapot · 06/12/2011 15:50

Excellent news about oven shelves, I'd been waiting for them to clean themselves but it doesn't seem to be happening. Woo hoo!

BiscuitNibbler · 06/12/2011 15:53

Spurred on by this thread I went to put my Brabantia lid in the dishwasher.

I then noticed a sticker inside which said not to put it in the dishwasher. Xmas Sad

30 seconds later I decided that I trusted a bunch of strangers on the internet more than the manufacturers of the bin and went ahead and put it in.

I can confirm that you were all right - the lid is now sparkling clean and smelling lovely. Xmas Grin

Loulousmummy · 06/12/2011 16:08

No the dishwasher won't get the black out of bath toys, but fill them with milton or bleach, leave overnight, drain, then run a cycle. All other bath toys are fine, even the net storage bag survived!

Mr Muscle won't overfoam in the dishwasher!

I've been an avid dishwasher loader since I worked in a hotel years ago. Each suite had a dishwasher so I put everything in I could (if it broke or didn't clean then it wasn't mine, oops did I really admit that!)

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 06/12/2011 16:12

hurrah!
bin lid spotless without hours of soaking section by section in sink that's too small and worrying about splashing bleach on clothes/kids/rabbit
I heart mumsnet and passionfruity for starting thread
hurrah hurrah

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 06/12/2011 16:12

mine also brabantia
glad I didn't notice sticker
hurrah again

SpagBollyandtheIvy · 06/12/2011 17:13

Oooooh detergent drawer, fantastic.

So tonight, after regular load has been through, i am doing washing up bowl, washing machine drawer, potty and maybe the nappy bucket.

WhereMyMilk · 06/12/2011 17:25

Scutters the lot of you - apart from the ones who don't put in dog poo wellies etc :o

Get0rf · 06/12/2011 17:28

Christ!

I don't have a dishwasher as I never really see the point - there are only three of us and when I used to own one I hated emptying the thing, and used to run out of cups.

BUT

BUT

If I got one I could wash the house: candles, toothbrush mugs, ornamental bowls, lampshades, candelabra, picture frames, flip flops, jewellery, loads of stuff.

I really, really, really want a dishwasher now, thanks bonsoir and everyone for the inspiration.

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 06/12/2011 17:33

God, I long for a dishwasher. Only have room and plumbing for either a DW or washing machine and the laundry seems more important. Bastard clothes. Or can I do clothes in a dishwasher?

Wasn't there a thread on someone poaching salmon in it too?

SuePurblybiltbyElves · 06/12/2011 17:34

Ignore me, missed the salmon posts...

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 17:44

If you haven't got space/plumbing for both a DW and a washing machine in your kitchen, maybe you could find another place for your washing machine - garage? Outhouse?

Get0rf · 06/12/2011 17:45

I haven't got room in my kitchen (well, I have, but it would mean ripping the cupboards to bits and ruining the worktop I would imagine) but I have got a laundry room where the washing machine is.

I am going to get me a dishwasher in the sales this year.
