Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

On the subject - can I put the oven shelves in dishwasher, and the bits that lift off the hob? been wanting to for ages but not daring in case I destroy oven

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:41

I put one sort of oven shelf in - the solid grill pan and roasting pan - with great success but find that the metal grid shelves need a scrub (after the DW) with a green scratchy sponge and some Cillit Bang in order to get all the grease off.

SusanneLinder · 06/12/2011 13:42

I put oven shelves in dishwasher all the time.Well the racks, and oven trays, and grill pans.

And I have put my bin lid in it too-usuaally with the animal feeding spoons and stuff.Separate wash though.

heliumballoon · 06/12/2011 13:45

I can't wait to go home tonight and put the Brabantia bin in the dishwasher! How sad am I!

(Am I the only one who keeps reading DW as Dear Wife and wondering why the hell all these men are complaining about their wives' cleanliness?).

soandsosmummy · 06/12/2011 13:46

thank you. right tomorrows job is put oven shelves through dishwasher (what a high life we all lead)

Ponyclubmum · 06/12/2011 13:49

I NEED a dishwasher! I had no idea you could clean all these things in there. No room in my tiny house though. :( Wonder if I could put one in my shed..?

Loulousmummy · 06/12/2011 13:49

Everything that can fit in the dishwasher goes in! Cleans bath toys so well. Dish drainer, basin...

Genius putting the loo seat and step in too! (Guess what's in the next cycle of the dishwasher)

Loulousmummy · 06/12/2011 13:51

soandsomummy - buy some mr muscle oven cleaner, spray everything INSIDE the dishwasher, whas then they will come out as new! Didn't notice much difference without some oven cleaning chemical too.

cookingfat · 06/12/2011 13:54

Hob bits, oven shelves, toys, cat bowls - in you go.

Genius idea the candles and bin lids. That's this afternoon's excitement planned...

cookingfat · 06/12/2011 13:55

loulou I thought of adding mr muscle but got scared kitchen would be overcome by tidal wave of foam.

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 06/12/2011 13:59

My bin lid is in and being washed. I am still excited!
I have also put ordinary dishes in. The lid is no dirtier than they are (no nappies or pets).
Will report back with results.

thousandDenierStocking · 06/12/2011 14:00

I've never had a dishwasher.

I never wanted one either, until I read this thread.

It is quite legitimate to be excited about new (and very cheap) ways of improving productivity and efficiency in housework Smile

DammitJanit · 06/12/2011 14:03

I do mine like that all the time. It's fine. But I normally don't put plates in as well.

Byeckersitsapropercrimbolike · 06/12/2011 14:06

If i put bath toys in, will it get all the black crap out of them? [ridiculously hopeful]

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 14:07

YOU need to wash them with Milton or bleach Byeck

pooka · 06/12/2011 14:08

Oooh - I have bonsoir's bin. It will be going in the dishwasher the next time there's space (2013 going by the sheer amount of pots/pans/crockery and stuff my family seems to use daily).

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 14:08

Sorry not sure why 'you' was in capitals Grin

mousysantamouse · 06/12/2011 14:14

no, byeck the black stuff stays in.
buy new ones and glue the hole shut...

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 06/12/2011 14:20

Pishtush - I think you and I are joining a very select band of Mumsnetters who are revolted by the idea of putting anything other than cooking items in the dishwasher. If there is a sudden increase in stomach upsets nationwide we'll know why.

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 14:22

You are much more likely to get a stomach upset from a dirty bin lid than from a DW that has washed a dirty bin lid. The whole point about DWs is that they kill germs very effectively!

For heavens sakes.. just rinse the bottom of your washing up bowl with hot water as you empty out the dirty dish water! Grin

I always use the extra hot cycle (it's better for the machine) and no, you don't need to use the top shelf for bin lids/washing up bowls etc. Anywhere will do!
