Washing the kitchen bin lid in the dishwasher

Just caught DH putting the kitchen-bin lid in the dishwasher along with the usual plates and cutlery. AIBU to think this is gross?

(He says there are too many nooks and crannies to easily clean it himself - it's a Brabantia lid not one of those swing-top lids - and that the high temperature of the dishwasher kills all the germs.

I do actually wipe the lid (fairly!) regularly so it's not the first time it's been cleaned, by the way - this is just DH's attempt at a 'deep clean' :)

You can put all sorts of things in the DW and get much cleaner, streak-free results for much less work than washing by hand.

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2011 11:45

Bonsoir - is yours a shiny bin? Is it still shiny / no damage to it at all? I think ours is stainless steel, definitely shiny (when I can be bothered to clean it). It is 30l.

I'm with you purple. I am getting a bit overexcited at the thought of putting my grimy bin lid in the dishwasher!

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 11:50

Fisher price garage?? In it goes!

GrooveIsInTheFart · 06/12/2011 11:50

Dishwash bin lids here too. Washing ip bowls. The bathroom items for toothpaste, soap ect. Hob rings and stands. Inner bits of the microwave.

NotnOtter · 06/12/2011 11:51

Sheep mines shiny - even shinier after dw!!

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 11:55

My bin

The lid is like new, after four years of DW treatment 2x a week. The body gets polished with steel polish every 2/3 months and washed off in the shower and dried off and polished with an e-cloth.

EdithWeston · 06/12/2011 11:55

Depends what it's made of. If there are plastic parts, how would you know they won't melt?

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 11:57

I think this thread needs to be on "discussions of the day". More MNers clearly need to be educated in the multiple uses of dishwashers!

MonaLotte · 06/12/2011 11:58

Wow this is such a good idea! I am doing this! Never thought about washing up bowl as well. I usually did that by hand.

MN is the best!

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 11:59

I know someone who puts her child's potty in the dishwasher.

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2011 12:02

NotNOtter and Bonsoir - thank you thank thank you. I'm reassured to know the plastic part of the lid will be fine.

Very excited, as I hate hate hate cleaning the bin and it gets filthy quickly.

Thanks!

sheeplikessleep · 06/12/2011 12:03

I'm guessing top shelf will be a bit 'safer' than bottom half too.

Clownsarescary · 06/12/2011 12:04

I've got loads of decorative glass beads that sit in pots etc and were very dustly. In they went (into the cutlery basket) out they came nice and shiney. I also put the toothbrush mug in there. :)

Methe · 06/12/2011 12:09

I put the potty in from time to time. The dustpan and brush is another thing.

DressDownFriday · 06/12/2011 12:10

This thread is a revelation to me! I can't believe the range of items you people are slinging in the dishwasher. I'm now going to have a look around the house and see what I can't be bothered to clean by hand can put in mine.

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 06/12/2011 12:39

also really excited
lid going in after lunch
i really do need to get a life

PhylisStein · 06/12/2011 12:41

I always put the bin lid (addis plastic swing bin) in the dw. Also I put in hair brushes and combs, all sorts of toys, all the shelves and drawers from my ovens, fridges and freezers, the metal gas hob surrounds go in, the microwave glass turntables (yes I have two!), kids pencil pots from their desks, crystal and cut glass vases/jugs ....

Don't hold back - go for it Grin The DISHWASHER IS YOUR FRIEND!

trumpton · 06/12/2011 12:48

I put my metal kitchen lampshades in and the paint all melted and wrinkled. Sad but I bought new ones but now THEY need washing. < decides to go for it !>

GibberingGinger · 06/12/2011 12:49

I put DD's toddler toilet seat in the dishwasher. Not with the plates etc, but with the cats bowls and compost caddy. Works a treat. You are def NBU

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 12:52

Those of you who say this is fine, have you ever cleaned out your dishwasher filter?

MilkNoSugarPlease · 06/12/2011 12:58

Yup, I clean it out every 2 weeks otherwise the dishwasher gets very stressed!

QuintessentiallyFestive · 06/12/2011 13:00

And the rest of you?

Do you realize your dishes are washed day in and day out, with left over food and bits, and gunk resting at the bottom?

Bonsoir · 06/12/2011 13:01

I clean the DW filter regularly (not that it is ever very dirty) but the most important thing is to clean the DW itself every few months using a special cleaning sachet.

mousysantamouse · 06/12/2011 13:01

yep, we clean it about every 2-3 weeks.
