To think my DH won't actually need 24 hours "bedrest" after a vasectomy

I mean, REALLY?! I don't remember bedrest after the birth of any of our 3 DC. Is there any medical reason for this? He's shown me the letter from the clinic and it's there in black and white. But I find it hard to believe....

Well, the fuss my DH makes when he has a slight cold - I dread to think how he would be after someone had cut a hole in his knackers. He would be bedridden for a week at least. Good luck!!

WorraLiberty · 24/11/2011 23:25

Oh for goodness sake at least let the poor guy have the operation and then see how he actually feels Hmm

canyou · 24/11/2011 23:26

Men are wimps I asked DP why and he has said to reduce swelling and prevent bleeding and because it would bloody well hurt Hmm he refuses to get one done

canyou · 24/11/2011 23:28

WorraLiberty is prob right leave him have the op and don't tell him when DP did his research it said up to 72 hrs bed rest

But were you there cooking dinner and washing up hours after giving birth?

fortyplus · 24/11/2011 23:30

After-effects of vasectomy vary enormously from one bloke to another. I know someone who had balls the size of melons for about a week after prancing around the next day.

slavetofilofax · 24/11/2011 23:30

YABU. He's having an operation to his man things. He deserves a day of staying in bed and being looked after.

Pandemoniaa · 24/11/2011 23:30

Actually, he probably will. The operation itself might be minor but the after-effects can be a bit spectacular. If you like the spectacle of swollen black bollocks, that is.

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2011 23:31

YABU

Kayano · 24/11/2011 23:32

And presumably he is doing this for your family's ultimate benefit...

Not to just get 24 hours bed rest?

YABU and i am Shock at some of the sexist attitudes on here.

The man is having surgery, he's been advised by a doctor to have bed rest. I suspect the doctor is marginally more qualified to decide than some folk on the internet. Hmm

Fwiw after the birth of my DS and my friends babies we pretty much took it as easy as possible for the first couple of days. With the exception of changes newborns can be looked after quite well sitting or lying down.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 24/11/2011 23:33

My DH had to have his done twice - the first time he went for one of those "fifteen minutes, in and out and awake and painless" ones and "they could only get one side, they couldn't find the other side" Hmm and after that he was fine, no pain, got up and walked out and it didn't hurt a bit. To get "the other side" though, he had to go in as a day patient in hospital and have a general anaesthetic, and that one did knock him for six a bit. It hurt much more - he wasn't in agony or anything but it was sore and would OUCH! if he moved suddenly or the 'wrong' way. It was definitely more of an actual "operation" than the first one. I guess it depends on the method they're doing and on the man as to how long he needs to recover.

ChishAndFips · 24/11/2011 23:36

A friend's DH had a vasectomy and decided he was too macho to follow the 24 hours bed rest rule so was putting up shelves the next day. The day after (apparently) everything down there was black-and-blue, and he was in agony. Worried it would fall off Shock. So I really think it is a good idea to have the bed rest!

libbyssister · 24/11/2011 23:40

my body may have been 'built' for childbirth but I also had holes cut into my nether regions, had a forceps delivery, a ventouse delivery and also I had something the "the size of a melon" exit my vagina. 3 bloody times!! and not once was I in bed for a day afterwards.

I mean, I don't expect him to be clearing the gutters or repainting the living room but lying in bed? For a whole day?

I think he was expecting a quiet day to himself but now we've found out that the school is shut for industrial action and the house will be filled with rampaging young boys. Ah well, it's bed rest, that doesn't mean sleep, right?

Moln · 24/11/2011 23:41

what sort of anastetic is he having for it? It's not always the procedure that the bed rest is needed for

DogStinkhorn · 24/11/2011 23:42

If you don't follow the after care the tubes can join up again.

WorraLiberty · 24/11/2011 23:42

Why do you keep comparing this to how much time you spent resting?

It's not a competition

smartyparts · 24/11/2011 23:46

My dh ignored the advice to take it easy and played rounders and cricket 2 days later.

He ended up like this

umm, I don't get this attitude of "men are all wimps who can't cope with pain". The men in my family are really brave, stoic and very rarely laid low with illness. I think it is a sexist myth. Also, I find it really sad that people can't give their DP a bit of tlc when they have had surgery. Everyone is different of course. I felt incredibly ill after having my wisdom teeth out by general anaesthetic, lots of brusing, pain etc, one of my colleagues was back to work the next day. Let the poor guy have a day of rest fgs.

Fizzylemonade · 24/11/2011 23:47

The fact that your DH is willing to have someone slice into his balls with a knife should allow him a bloody week in bed Grin

My DH had one years ago, I watched the whole operation he was sore afterwards but then had travelling bruising. We still have the photos (thank the lord for cameras on mobiles) the bruising started just at the incision site, several hours later it he had black balls. The next day it started travelling down his thighs. Cue several trips back to the GP to check everything was normal.

Bare in mind as well that either he/you or a nurse will shave his balls before the op.

So basically your lovely DH is having someone shave his balls, then cut them open, slice his tubes, sew them and then sew up his sack, he should have all the time he wants in bed (on sofa)

WorraLiberty · 24/11/2011 23:50

thank the lord for cameras on mobiles

Yeah, sod going into Snappy Snaps on the Hight Street to get them developed Grin
