Me & DH have agreed to get a cat, now that our DC are at an age where they can respect an animal and hopefully won't torture it.

I absolutely adore devon rexes - mainly for their huge affectionate personalities, but I also find their looks exotic yet sweet at the same time. They also have the benefit of not shedding too much.

DH, who knows nothing about cats, has refused to let me get one, saying they look like gremlins and are 'freaks of nature'.

I am really upset about his dismissive and judgmental attitude. So what if the cat looks different? It will still make a wonderful family pet - more so because they love human company. My response to him is how would he have reacted if one of our children didn't have conventional looks - he would be devastated to hear anyone making such unkind remarks.

I know it seems irrational, but I really, really want one of these cats. I am also really upset that DH is vetoing the cat based only on looks.

Why don't you get one from the cat shelter?

and your dh is right, they do look like gremlins

Those do like quite like gremlins, though.

Yes, but they look like that are thinking thoughts whenever your backs turned, your dh is correct to be scared.

as you can see from my id i am a massive cat fan but sorry devon rexes do look wierd, and yes your oh is being a bit unreasonable judging a cat on its looks, and as others have and will say you will get so much more satisfaction getting a rescue cat and giving one that has had it hard a loving home, at this time of year rescues are up to the hilts in kittens, haworth cat rescue where i work has 15 kittens available this weekend alone and foster homes full aswell with more kittens waiting to come back, fwiw two of mine are rescues one was abandonded at ten days old in a carrier bag with his brother and sister and hand reared, the other one was born to a feral mom and they are both totally loving people orientated cats

Oh come on...if you were after a cat to be a pet for the kids a moggy would suffice.
You want a posh cat.

That's fine - to each their own....but be honest with your dh - you never know!

Aw, never seen these cats before but they look really cute. I think your DH is being a tad unreasonable but i do think families need yo agree on pets from the outset. Why are you so set on these cats? Pretty much any cat will make a good family pet, though i agree, some more friendly than others.
However, I would second getting one from a shelter. If you get a cat (rather than a kitten) you can find out all about their personalities, if they're good with children, affectionate etc. And you're giving a desperate cat a home. What's not to like?

Those cats in those photos do not look happy They know they're ugly and are tormented by this. They look depressed and fed up. They look like they're thinking "why me?" and I don't blame them.

Get a proper kitty for crying out loud!

I understand that there are health issues associated with the breed and so wouldn't wish to own one myself, for the sake of the cat and me/the family. I'd also be against the idea as they're being bred by people who are fully aware that there are already hundreds of unwanted cats and kittens in shelters seeking homes.

One of the big considerations in owning a pet is whether all adults in the family are into the idea. It's the first thing a shelter will ask, whether you're seeking a cat, dog, rabbit or any other animal. That your husband clearly isn't keen on you having this breed is another reason for not owning a Rex.

tabulahrasa siamese are fabby cats, my second resue the feral born one his mom must have had a dallience with a siamese cos apart from the black tabby legs, tail and face the rest of him is so siamese even down to the blue eyes and pointy ears

Maybe a compromise? Fuzzy with huge ears? Or you could veet them, but that may be cruel.

If you want a cat, then approach a rescue. There are more than enough cats needing homes.

If you only want that breed of cat, then, in my opinion, you sound like a bit of a petulant child.

FWIW- I think Rexes ran through the ugly forest and hit every single tree on the way through.

You know what?
Everyone has odd little nuances they like to indulge. I know I do.

There was a poster on here recently getting a slagging because she wanted to buy this odd, overpriced moses basket that was silly money.....and pretty horrible as well from my pov.
She loved it though. It was the one thing she really wanted to indulge in.

How much is a rex cat then?

I better make sure DH doesn't read your post issey! We agreed to get a new kitten once we had moved house to keep our lovely 5 year old moggy company, but he keeps on saying "maybe we should get 2 or 3. They all need homes!" It's alright for him, he lives away during the week, so I'd probably end up being known as the crazy cat lady!

I would love to get a Maine Coon though

I'd still get a moggy from the cat shelter though. They need homes, I think Devon Rexes may be a bit snobby.

You remind me of that episode from friends, when Racheal got that ugly cat, as her grandma had one when she was little.........it didn't end well at all.

IMO, you should all go to the cat shelter and chose one as family, it is a pet for the family, right.

decent rex from good breeder about £300-400 moggy from a good rescue £50-£80

Well f it doesn't damage babies or sensitive ladies areas, than it probably wouldn't damage the cat....apart from the grooming thing. You'd probably have to put them in a teeny cat gimp mask till you'd showered them?
