To ask if you've ever had a bad reaction on announcing your new baby's name?

Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

My mother did. She announced to DS1 that she didn't like DS2's 1 st name and was in a strop as DS2's middle name is my Dad's name. As he is her xh, she didn't like that either. Her problem, and she can lump it. Angry Dad wouldn't have passed comment if we had a DD and gave her Mother's name for her middle name. Bloody annoying, and bloody rude!

People seem to give a bad reaction when they hear my youngest son's name.

My partner say's I'm just imagining things and he's probably right because I HATE my son's name.

No, but my mum said a friend sniggered when she told him DSs name.

Yes...When telling them my DD's name...

"Oh I thought that was a boys name"

"I've only ever known a boy called that"

"I went to school with a boy called..." etc etc.

Well DD is definitely a girl & that is her name so :O

Oh and when I told people before I had her that I liked it I got a few funny faces and "not keen" comments, which is why I am going to keep quiet when I have future DC's untill they actually arrive and I can say "Meet

Yes but not directly to my face. My MIL to my DP whispering in the kitchen when DS was born 'I don't like , can't you change it to * instead?' Most people disliked it I think, but 4 years on we love it more than ever, it's his name, it's just him. People get over it, try not to let it bother you.

All my family hated dd1 name (violet), they told me I should pick a nice middle name in case she gets bullied at school! When people say now how nice the name is they act like they loved it all along...she starts school next year so will have to wait and see if she will get picked on :o idiots!

There was a thread on here the other day slating dd's name Sad Angry. But it hasn't happened to me in rl, in fact I get a lot of positive responses to it, when people actually establish what it is! (it sounds similar to another more common name)

Ah well, I am in Northern Ireland and it's a bit sectarian and ex-MIL is very very staunch Protestant (which will become relevant I promise)

DS1 she hit the roof because the name we wanted him to have was a nickname and we "couldn't" put that on his birth certificate. She had a complete and utter meltdown threw a massive tantrum ex-H had no balls and we backed down. As a result, he has a name on his birth certificate which he is never called.

DS2 we picked a name we liked. She hit the roof and said she would not be calling him by his first name would use his second because it was "a Fenian name"

Yes numerous people commented how bland our girl name choice was. So we told them we had chosen Davina (BB was on) and their reactions were hilarious but I fell in love with it. Unfortunately the baby was a boy. But some people think nothing of having to have their say about everything. MIL said "I won't be having a grandson called Ewan!" when Dh suggested it for a boy.

my reaction was the worst! i loved DDs name, i thought it was so original then met 3 others in her first week of life :( bitches. its a horrible chavvy name and it makes me so sad for her :(

I had a horrible experience when registering DD at the doctor's surgery. The Receptionist informed me that nobody would be able to say her name (it's a Scottish name and we live in Southern England). I do wonder if I wasn't Scottish but of another nationality/culture if she'd felt entitled to be so rude (and she was very rude!). Angry

I had a HUGE list o name's I liked. My partner didn't like any of them so I told him to choose.

He picked a name I was neither here northern about really so went with it thinking it would grow on me.

As son is getting older though I find myself calling him by his nick name more (chosen by his 2yr old brother) because he just doesn't suit his name. In my eye's anyway. The older he gets, the less he looks like an (insert name here)
