Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

I have had a few ignoramouses people say 'oh, isn't that a boy's name?' about DD's name ... Confused but no- she has a girl's name funnily enough, and I would certainly pity any poor little boy saddled with it!

I still don't really love DS' name though Sad DH chose it as we could make no decision, but it just feels wrong for him... seems universally liked though, so something to be thankful for! Grin

nenevomito · 21/08/2011 21:20

Yes, my DM told me that my DDs name was common. To be fair, I'd told my DSis that her chosen name for my DN would get him bullied.

Both of us were right, but it didn't make either me or sis change our minds!

Dialsmavis · 21/08/2011 21:22

I called my son something ridiculous but nobody has ever bullied him yet (he is 8) or taken the piss to my face in real life. People are usually say it's a great name but when I stupidly did the ask MN thing when I put it into baby names I got the hugest slating and found out some nasty connotations about it. His name does suit him now and he is wonderful obv, but now nearly 9 years older I wouldn't pick it again. I don't think it makes him look bad as such but I'm sure when meeting him people must think he must have twatty parents...they are probably not that far off the mark. Grin

For DD I picked a lovely normal name (Matilda) but MN has said even that is faddy and try hard Sad

TastyMuffins · 21/08/2011 21:22

Yes, the exILs. ExSIL told us a couple of weeks before my EDD that I was having a boy - her clairvoyant confirmed it too! - she said she had given it some thought and that we should call him Harvey because it was a lovely name. Can't believe she seemed to think we would actually let her chose the name.

After DS was born we emailed all friends and family we had email addresses for and announced his name, didn't even BCC so it was clear it went to a lot of people. First name is an unusual choice, middle name on the top 100 list. ExBIL emailed back saying 'Are you really going to call your son that?' like we would have emailed the world with a joke name?

Apparently DS would be teased at school. ExBIL mentioned the Johnny Cash song 'A Boy Named Sue' despite the fact that the name is most usually a boy's name even though it can be both (I'd never heard of it used for a girl until after we chose it). He patronisingly suggested another name as a middle name so he could use that if he preferred - obviously didn't read beyond the first name before going into state of shock. ExMIL said she had gone to school in the dark ages with a boy with that name and he was teased ad called Vermin. Not sure how it even fits with the name though so maybe she misheard and thought his name was Vernon or something else... It was ages before she said his name but think now she just couldn't actually remember it most of the time.

Most common comment on hearing his name is 'Wow, what a great name!'

HairyGrotter · 21/08/2011 21:24

I got told by the anaesthetist that the name I had chosen sounded like the contraceptive pill...her knowledge of Roman names and so forth clearly lacked. Other than that person, everyone has taken well to DD's name and always have positive comments.

HairyGrotter · 21/08/2011 21:26

I did want to name her Elvira for a time but the reaction was pretty horrendous lol

mosschops30 · 21/08/2011 21:26

Please post what the names are, this thread is very frustrating Smile

HairyGrotter · 21/08/2011 21:27

DD is called Minerva

festi · 21/08/2011 21:28

I love that name Hairy was on my top 3 when dd was born I was very high on GnA and announced my 3 names and midwifes laughed at them, which made me laugh uncontroably and when I came down I couldnt then use it.

festi · 21/08/2011 21:30

xpost... hairy..sorry thought It was going to be celeste

Dialsmavis · 21/08/2011 21:31

Dali Blush but have just outed myself personally and probably professionally so a name change will be imminent anyway!

notbothered · 21/08/2011 21:31

Even now that call her some different names which drives me mental. I dont mind if you dont like my dd's name, but don't take the piss!

My Gran said (on hearing DS's name): "Poor little thing." She did not mince her words. Grin

OrganicFreeRangeBoys · 21/08/2011 21:33

Hairy my youngest son was going to be Minerva if he was a girl.

If we have another baby and its a girl, well be using Minerva still.

My son (with the name i don`t like) is Arran.

germl · 21/08/2011 21:36

DS1 is Dexter and DS2 is Dawson

toomanyopinions · 21/08/2011 21:38

Yes! FIL to DD2 in broad Essex accent "'Ello Dee"..."Har-Har-Har-Har" . She is (I think) the very lovely Elodie.

mosschops30 · 21/08/2011 21:38

Arran was one of my faves for dz2 but dh didnt like it
Never heard minerva, ever, which you should be very proud of because its rare to hear of a name youve never come across unless its some made up chav nightmare like lacey-chardonai-madonna-jane.
Minerva doesnt sound like it fits into the chav bracket

mosschops30 · 21/08/2011 21:40

Dexter and dawson, how cool is that Smile they sound like the handsome brothers everyone wants to date in school Grin (but if youre nything like me you wont be letting any little harlots near your boys)

HairyGrotter · 21/08/2011 21:43

I'm an ageing old goth at heart really. I adored the name the moment I heard it back when Deftones released their song named 'Minerva'. I also adore Harry Potter, and Professor McGonagall is named Minerva, along with it being very popular in the Victorian Era which again, is an era I have studied and adored since I was young. Perfect name for a perfect girl.

Her middle name is Lilith, after Adam's first wife...she was a firey one Wink wonderful history and back story to all my girls names.

festi · 21/08/2011 21:43

germl my not very elderly G. Aunt called my Dnephew Dexter after he was born, DN was a few months old when she passed away sudenly, she knew he was'nt Dexter but for some reason she just couldnt get his name right, every one found it funny but she was always embarrased for getting it wrong. his name is nothing like Dexter but occassionaly we still call him it. I think its a great name.

WaftyCrank · 21/08/2011 21:53

I've had family say they don't like DD's and DS2's names. Especially DD's but the general thoughts on here seem to be that it's quite unliked. I do kind of regret her name.

When people ask DS2's name, they nearly always say, 'Oh that's unusual, where did you get that from?'

It's Gabriel. I always reply with 'The Bible' :o

YouDoTheMath · 21/08/2011 21:58

Wafty Gabriel is our second choice for a boy :)

OP posts:
WaftyCrank · 21/08/2011 22:02

What's your first choice? Sorry if you've already said, I've only read through quickly.

I do love his name although he does occasionally get Gabrielle at the doctors. He's only 5 months though so not bothered yet. DS1 is Joseph so we often get asked if we're 'very religious'. We're not, just loved the names :)

Paschaelina · 21/08/2011 22:04

Never been told it's awful but a tesco checkout lady pulled a face when she heard the Boy's 9 letter name and mentioned that she called her son a 3 letter name so at least he would be able to spell it Hmm High hopes for him much?
