Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

My MIL had great pleasure in telling her friend that we were naming DD after her, which we weren't. So we changed it to "An ok ladies name that she will be picked on terribly for". Angry DD is Verity.

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2011 22:09

I love the name Gabriel.

mousymouse · 21/08/2011 22:10

the worst we got was a "never heard this name before" and "I knew someone with that name and she was a right bitch"...
both my dc's names are frequently in the baby names section...

superparty · 21/08/2011 22:10

Dexter and Dawson are fab names, am so jealous.

mine are ds-mason, dd-abbi, dd-casey, dd-darcy, dd-erin and ds-louie,

i sooooooo wanted to call louie, Austin but gave in to dh again!!!!!

when my dad asked why we called him louie i said well i wanted to call him austin, my mum nearly choked and said dont be so ridiculous, i thought louie was bad but now its ok Hmm

i thought Erin and Austin would have sounded fab, but erin is only 17mths and louie is 7mths so she calls him Dewie, so i'm sticking with that as a nick name

x

AuntiePickleBottom · 21/08/2011 22:12

i did when my sister announced her DD name

WaftyCrank · 21/08/2011 22:13

Oh that's lovely :)

DP really wanted Hercules for DS2, I prefer Gabriel though!

superparty · 21/08/2011 22:13

thesecondcoming very funny barmpottery, your post made me laugh :)

rosieposey · 21/08/2011 22:17

Yes, my ds is called Milo. Cue a barrage of ... "oh it's a dogs name", "it's a chocolate drink" ect, ect. Inlaws hated it but DH and I think it suits him just fine and WE like it.

Ohnoredundo · 21/08/2011 22:17

I was recently told of a woman who called her daughter Aurora. Her MIL and SIL hated the name that much they decided to simply call her Alice.

YouDoTheMath · 21/08/2011 22:20

I love Aurora!

faverolles · 21/08/2011 22:24

Ohhh I love Milo. Fantastic name!

bumpsoon · 21/08/2011 22:24

My parents were a bit off when we announced the name of dd1 , they both asked about her middle name and frantically tried to make a nick name up for her . It is unusual ,but not unususal sounding . Its one of those names that can be for a boy or a girl . Infact i know there is one mumsnetter whose little boy is called the same name . Oh and it is super easy to spell !

ssmile · 21/08/2011 22:24

My sister called her DS zac my nan hated it so said she would just call him jack, so she does! She is 90 but got all her marbles .....mostly :o

longbay · 21/08/2011 22:26

I thought the name we gave our Dc was a very pretty name and also fairly uncommon. When she started nursery we realized there were 3 others in her class!
When I first told my Mum her name she said, 'oh, didn't we have a dog called .....'!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 21/08/2011 22:28

I have a DD Tyla, get comments all the time.

rosieposey · 21/08/2011 22:31

It is faverrolles Grin I think people thought it was a new fangled 'trendy' name that we had just gone with on a whim but I have always loved his name since I read "catch 22" when I was 17 and it's been around a long time.

I think there are quite a few 'Milo's around now too. And I think it's one of those names that will suit all through life iykwim?

elliejjtiny · 21/08/2011 22:40

I love Gabriel. The ds's have very unusual names that will out me if I say them but I can say that we couldn't agree on a middle name for ds3 so we let ds2 decide and so ds3 ended up being named after a cbeebies character Grin

faverolles · 21/08/2011 22:40

I like the name Arlo as well, but I've seen that slated as trying too much as well.
DS is Ivan, I like Ivo, but Dh hates that so it's never really stuck.

worraliberty · 21/08/2011 22:42

I don't mind Gabriel as such but no when it's shortened to Gay...which it inevitably will be.

faverolles · 21/08/2011 22:42

Ellie - am I wrong for hoping it's Iggle Piggle? :o

StrawberryTot · 21/08/2011 22:44

I get it all the time with my DS, mainly people pull a funny face as it's so unusual not to mention it constantly gets spelt and pronounced wrong. But when my mum found out what he was being called she rang my dad (they have been seperated over 10 year) crying about how i'd ruined everything as i didn't give him the name of her choice Confused

TruthSweet · 21/08/2011 22:46

HairyGrotter - Lilith is DD1's first name and my mum was horrified for ages. We stressed the first feminist, suffragette mascot/symbol, etc, etc and she came round (not that we would have changed her name anywayGrin).

Still it goes with my other DDs names (Alethea & Callia) though I tend to just call 'GIRLS' when I need them to come here rather than 'Lilith, Alethea, Callia' as that does make me feel pretentious Wink

A1980 · 21/08/2011 22:54

I must confess i have reacted badly to a choice of name before. I gasped and pulled a face: I couldn't help it. The name was Nearly Moon though so forgive me the reaction.

Megatron · 21/08/2011 22:57

MIL hates DD's name and refuses to call her a ' weird Frenchy name'. DD's name is Marielle and after being horrified by her name then by the fact she doesn't have a middle name, point blank refused to call her by her own name and calls her Mary. Seriously. And she wonders why we sometimes have a rather tricky relationship.
