Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

Yes one person started singing a child's song which Ds's name is prominent in - my friend promptly told her to button it :) noone else and its quite common now Tbh

My DS is named Jake, after a character from Stephen King's Dark Tower series, which DP and I both read and loved. It is a common name but we love it and it suits him perfectly.

When I took him for his four week check up, the doctor said sneeringly "I take it you've seen Avatar then?"

Er, no we hadn't actually and even if we had, so what?

Some of the names on here are absolutely beautiful!

We decided not to tell anyone the chosen name for DD1 after my Nan had said that she hated our other choices We were liking
Ruby
Scarlet
Hazel
at the time she said they were all horrible and we cant name our children.
In the end I decided to keep it secret and glad we did, though she got very upset that DD1s middle name is my other grandmothers name! She makes out that DD1 doesnt have any middle names.
She hated my brother DS1s name too but likley he is in Australia and never heard the reaction, and hopefully by the time he comes over for a visit she would have forgotten.

My MIL asked what the first initial was of the chosen names (before dd was born, we didnt know what we were having) She then guessed correctly the girls name, she then made fun of it saying it was too long and couldnt be shortened and it was horrible. She never said a word when DD1 was born just said it was a wonderful name, DH just smiled at me from the other side of the room.

There are some fabulous names on this thread. Craigsangel i LOVE the name Doris. Go with it.

I am always getting Hmm faces when people find out the children's names. Much better now tbh as they almost assume it will be slightly off the wall so accept it.

The Irish names are beautiful. Rufus was one of my favourite but we called the dog Rupert and now Rufus seems too similar to call dc8.

Thanks largeginandtonic. It is the only one she answers to, so she must like it as well!

I like Rufus but my OH starts singing anything by think of Rufus and Chaka Khan.

Having worked in a nurseries for years I have come across some great names, and even the most unusual become usual when you say them often enough.
I like unusual names because the children are always unique and individual. I used to hate it when the children differentiated between common names by saying 'naughty chloe or good chloe' or even worse 'fat Bob or thin Bob' no matter how many times we corrected them.
I have cared for a doris, winnie, lanesra (arsenal backwards, dad's choice), angel, disney, fanny, dicky, oasis (after the band not drink) vlad, atila (as in the hun) jeronimo, burberry, summer-sun.
The only one that i thought pushed the limit was jack daniels-- why would you?

vividgingerchilli · 27/08/2011 12:05

I know of a Jack Daniels as well, like you say "why would you?"
