Also posted in Baby Names, but I guess a lot if the ladies there don't have DCs yet.

So - did anyone ever have the gumption to tell you outright that they think the name you chose for your child is awful?

I've posted this before on a baby names thread. When I was pregnant with dd I really wanted to name her Calypso. I loved it, I still love it but it was very heavily criticised and I wimped out.
I do love the name dh and I settled on though. :o

Just read Megatrons post which reminded me of something my mum told me. My mum is Welsh and gave me a Welsh name, my dads side are English and Scottish. Almost all the welcome baby cards my mum & dad received from his side had my name anglicised. My mum was so angry she threw them away. She told my my granny in no uncertain terms that I was to be called by my own name. My mum said it was the only argument she ever had with my granny as she usually let her have her way "to keep the peace".

TaperJeanGirl · 21/08/2011 23:15

My mum and my nan hated the name I chose for dd3 (Effie), my mum tried right up until the day I had her to change my mind, my nan refuses to call her it and calls her Ellie, E, baby....anything other than her name Grin I couldnt care less, I love it, my mum says its grown on her now....

JennyPiccolo · 21/08/2011 23:18

Ive had the chat about 'she won't be able to spell it' (11 letters). Seriously?

Also been asked if i made it up! Its a very old fashioned scottish name.

elliejjtiny · 21/08/2011 23:24

faverolles no it's not iggle piggle Smile

It's Timothy, as in Timmy time.

faverolles · 21/08/2011 23:25

Phew! :)

FabbyChic · 21/08/2011 23:27

My sons name is also a girls name just spelt differently. He is 18 and we have never had another of his name At any school or college. There are a couple of actors with the name though and a famous cowboy.

Muckyhighchair · 21/08/2011 23:27

When I hospital the doctor came around and asked with I was calling ds

I said
He looked at my surname and said your not calling that are you? Too be fair his name does sound silly with my surname but ds took dps which is fine, no silliness.

But for a doctor to say that half laughing at real led pissed me off

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2011 23:28

Marion, Fabby?

babyhammock · 21/08/2011 23:32

My mum
For about 6 weeks she refused to call him by it.
I ended up having a massive strop about how I wasn't going to let her give DS a complex about his name which everyone else incidently thought was great (or so they said :o)

FabbyChic · 21/08/2011 23:35

Ha ha ha Marion! No!

worraliberty · 21/08/2011 23:36

Jessie?

OrganicFreeRangeBoys · 21/08/2011 23:37

Jessie?

FabbyChic · 21/08/2011 23:39

It's spelt Jesse

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 21/08/2011 23:40

I bet Fabby's ds is Jesse.
There are some great names on this thread and some very rude reactions especially from GPs!

Sausagesarenottheonlyfruit · 21/08/2011 23:41

Doh x post

FabbyChic · 21/08/2011 23:43

Sausages you spelt it right! Neat

nokissymum · 21/08/2011 23:45

I was so excited when i asked dsis what her ds name was (my first nephew)when he was born, imagine my shock and confusion when she responded quite lamely "its Junior"!

I didnt say a word as i didnt want to hurt her, but for goodness sake....!up till then i had never thought of my sis as chavy. Hmm

Curiousmama · 21/08/2011 23:47

Mosschops Shock at your mother!

I like Cormac.

My dss have very unusual names. Everyone likes ds1's but I have had funny looks about ds2's plus a comment when he was a baby. She was a cow in general though so it didn't faze me Wink

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2011 23:48

Oh I really like Jesse.

worraliberty · 21/08/2011 23:48

I know 3 kids called Junior and they're all black...though I'm not sure where their families originally come from. So I've always assumed it was an old..possibly Jamaican/African name perhaps?

ImperialBlether · 21/08/2011 23:48

It's a rock star name Grin

OrganicFreeRangeBoys · 21/08/2011 23:48

Oh dear, I wrote Jesse first then went back and changed it.

sorry Blush

Fab name though.
