...to be utterly disgusted that people - especially women - use the word 'frape'. It's not big or clever, is DISGUSTING

...a stupid, awful word that should be banned. How can people use this word and not feel ashamed of doing so?

OP posts:
MoominsAreScary · 06/08/2011 01:32

It's just a word used in a different context by a different generation

My grandad still uses the word gay to mean happy and merry

no, two different points. the word... urrgh. trivialises rape imo. the action of going onto someone's fb page and posting things to humiliate and abuse. someone wrote to me that it was just 'i love my mum' they were writing (ie not humiliating or abusive) and i responded that according to this R4 prog today it was much much worse than that for some victims, genuine violation and bullying.

MightyQuim · 06/08/2011 01:33

Actually I won't resist the urge. Aitch I completely disagree with when you said on page one 'killing puppies is fun'.

sunshinelifeisgood · 06/08/2011 01:34

oops going to have to read this again thought there was only 2 pages and realised that there was 7 As you were :)

MightyQuim · 06/08/2011 01:34

And don't expect an apology.

squeakytoy · 06/08/2011 01:34

facebook cyber bullying is rarely done by someone who has gone into another persons facebook page, it is done by attacking that person on their walls, a totally different thing altogether

forwantofabetter1 · 06/08/2011 01:36

FFS get a life some people are just too continious (sp ) and PC for words!!!
Fraped is having someone else put something in your status box without your knowing its a joky term and in no way relates to an act of sexual violence.
When you say your FB account has been fraped you are in no way comparing it to being sexualy violated

Twoequalstired · 06/08/2011 01:37

Aitch - I'm pretty sure that every single person on here agrees with your opinions on rape conviction rates and the services that rape victims receive. My point however was that this was about "frape", not rape. I will maintain that you have argued passionately against this term as otherwise you would not be on this thread. Cyber bullying is another horrible part of our society but what made that girl attempt suicide was whatever her tormentors chose to post under her name, it was not to do with the word "fraping"

AitchTwoOh · 06/08/2011 01:38

? MQ Hmm

squeakytoy, so what is your point, then? fraping is a fun activity enjoyed by young people? raping not so much fun? two separate things... move along? fine. that's your opinion.i just happen to think it's a pretty depressing one.

sunshinelifeisgood · 06/08/2011 01:41

jesus christ im so out of this one. good luck all

Mumcentreplus · 06/08/2011 01:42

It's just bluddy poor taste imo...

AitchTwoOh · 06/08/2011 01:42

look, maintain what you want, Two, it doesn't make it true. i actually posted to the effect that i'd be perfectly happy to see fraping used when conviction rates for rape were up. currently the term uuuurgghs me out, precisely because of the crappy conviction rates for actual rape as i believe that we do not have the reserves to chip away at just yet.

MightyQuim · 06/08/2011 01:44

So you think it is trivialising rape but trivialising rape will become OK if conviction rates go up? That's got to be the most bizarre point of the thread so far!

AitchTwoOh · 06/08/2011 01:51

ah yes, here it is...

"i'd be highly relaxed about 'frape' as a word if women who were violently sexually attacked were taken seriously and convictions sought and obtained on their behalf. as it is... 6%. i don't thinkwe are inaposition to have a giggle about fraping until actual raping is taken a bit more seriously."

as in... i could buy the 'oh it's just the evolution of language' line if we were evolving from a point where rape is a crime that secures convictions and jail time. you've got some wiggle room there, if a figure was say 80% or so. but as it is... 6% of rapes get a conviction... add in jokey fraping etc and pickle adolescent brains in hilarious 'she takes it up the arse' post hijacks and do we really think that figure will improve in the future?

Mumcentreplus · 06/08/2011 01:53

I don't think this has anything to do with conviction rates...it's a general apathy and triviality of language

AitchTwoOh · 06/08/2011 01:55

oh yes, well there is that of course, mumcentreplus. but i can tolerate stupid language better from a position of greater power, i guess.

MightyQuim · 06/08/2011 01:58

I think it is you who is sounding quite mad Aitch. Rape wouldn't be a subject for 'giggles' if there was a 100% conviction rate.

Twoequalstired · 06/08/2011 02:05

If someone posted "You take it up the arse" on someone else's wall, but hadn't accessed their account (or "fraped" them) would that be ok then Aitch?

Mumcentreplus · 06/08/2011 02:10

Completely pathetic ..giving even an ounce of the credence of a physical, mental or otherwise attack similar meaning as a person hacking your face-book account...call it facked if anything..makes more sense and has less offensive overtones...lazy thoughtless slang

BahHumPug · 06/08/2011 02:10

Actually, Aitch, I'd like to take issue with you saying my opinion had been 'canceled out' by another.

My voice is not one to be silenced or disregarded because there is opposition. My opinion is still valid, still counts, and still deserves respect. Just because one person agrees and another disagrees does not create a neutrality with regard to the issue.

Fucking disrespectful and ignorant, that.

Twoequalstired · 06/08/2011 02:11

Aitch "look, maintain what you want, Two, it doesn't make it true" - I was just basically saying you agreed with the OP that frape was an awful word that shouldn't be used. I think that is true.
forwantofabetter1 - very very true

Mumcentreplus · 06/08/2011 02:13

I would just like to point out...this is the internet...you know that place that is filled with bad taste..interesting opinions and crazy arse people...

anyone who would know you well enough knows if you take it up the jaxy or not...

Twoequalstired · 06/08/2011 02:16

Mumcentreplus - I think a lot of the offence that comes from slang is because it is lazy, that's how it develops. It doesn't make it right but I do believe this is a language issue rather than anything more. If you call it facked then people who have been hacked could legitimately claim that their life was ruined by hacking and that it is utterly disrespectful and disgusting for people to use that term in such a casual manner. Language tends to evolve rather that completely new words being created
