To think River Song is too old for MS's Doctor?

So this doctor is her doctor. Does anyone else think the actress and the character are too old for him? It's not just the physical age, he's just very young in general. River is mid 40s and so cool and sophisticated and the doctor is a bit of a twenty something goofball.

Or is it just me?

AIBU to be reading a thread about Doctor Who at 12.30 at night?

confuddledDOTcom · 27/04/2011 01:03

He turned up at the same meeting place but a different time. That's certainly a good potential explanation!

duckypoo · 27/04/2011 02:05

That is certainly a plausible explanation Pixel, the whole future doctor turning up in the weeping angel episodes, also him crossing his timeline in the finale bits seems odd.

I still can't get over the him letting himself out of the pandorica bit, that part really really just sticks in my throat, people explain it by way of a time loop, but it does not make sense in the slightest, along with Amy imagining the dr back into existence. I try to get over it and suspend my disbelief/hope that all will be explained, but I can't. It bugs me something chronic.

People say moffat is a clever plotter and all will be revealed but tbh, tgitf was nonsensical, or a bit stupid really, along with sitl/fotd which I just didn't enjoy at all, the device of the girl and Dr Moon was just odd.

With torchwood coe I didn't like the ending either, I didn't really keep up with the first 2 series because they were a bit dull. However I watched the whole of coe again recently and the ending did seem more inevitable/necessary, there were a couple of points I had missed on first viewing which seemed to make the ending very odd. I still think it was gripping and brilliant though, the bits where they were tring to get away and hide the children were truly heart stopping. The logic that the government used to sacrifice the children was also very inducing, I'm sure the reality in that situation would not be much different.

duckypoo · 27/04/2011 02:21

I really just hope Moffat has a lovely/neat ending in mind for this whole River/criss crossy timeline shite or tbh the next person to take over the reins is going to have a massive continuity mess to unravel.

There are people who think that for Amy the whole of the RTD era ie alien invasions and stuff didn't happen, or even the whole of the RTD era, the earth being misplaced ect didn't happen for all of the people on earth seeing as the universe imploded and was replaced via the pandorica.

This all needs to be cleared up, I am very confused about it all really, it all gives me a bit of a shagging headache, Amy did not know what a dalek was despite the previous invasions, so........I don't bloody know.

I know I have thought about it all a bit too much, but it is needlessly complicated.

kaid100 · 27/04/2011 05:50

He made a point of this by calling her "Mrs Robinson" in the last episode, but I'm not certain that Matt Smith is "her" doctor. She could still be part of the series next time he regenerates.

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 27/04/2011 08:00

You know, we could all just sit back and relax and enjoy it as light entertainment instead of trying to make it logical and scientifically sound Grin

Do you think, perhaps, we take it a smidge too seriously?

Tee2072 · 27/04/2011 08:18

She's already had the moment when she's looked in his eyes and he had no idea who she was. In The Library. And it did kill her.

And that was David Tennant.

They have been travelling in opposite directions her entire life. We have no idea how old she was when they met. Or, as she is also a time traveller, how old she is now.

And the Doctor is 908. Unless you count at the beginning of last week's ep when he was 1103.

He's a time traveller. Did we all forget that?!?!

Tee2072 · 27/04/2011 08:27

Sorry, should say we've already seen that moment. Obviously it hasn't happened to River yet.

Hmm.....Silence in the Library - psychologist called Dr MOON - the 2nd part of the Impossible Astronaut is called Day of the Moon!

AitchTwoOh · 27/04/2011 09:44

dr moon has already been mooted on this thread as a possible dr who... but i think colin salmond would be unlikely now.

TandB · 27/04/2011 09:50

I don't think MS is River's doctor. She said she had never seen him look so young when she met DT and MS is even younger.

She talks about the moment when she will look into her doctor's eyes etc, but as another poster said, we know when that happens - it is in Silence in the Library and that is when she dies.

I have a nasty feeling that we might never found out exactly who she is - if they are travelling in opposite directions in time, what is to say that something didn't happen in the middle of it all and disrupt everything so that she doesn't know who he is when she first meets him and vice versa. That would be annoying though!

Re: the suggestion that the vashta nerada are going to be involved - I read an article that said that the monsters in the recent episode are called "The Silence" so I don't think the VN are going to get involved.

I think Rob Brydon would make a great doctor....

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 27/04/2011 09:52

Unless - dr moon was a computer programme, wasn't he?

He could have been created in the image of the doctor - at that time regenerated as that face - after helping them - with the daughter, he could have been the one who 'saved' her, and created dr moon (himself) to look after her.

I should write for Dr Who. That'd be a good episode Grin

HecateQueenOfTheNight · 27/04/2011 09:53

"never seen him look so young"

She meant his soul. Looking into his eyes. His eyes were so young. His soul was so young. That's how I took it.

AitchTwoOh · 27/04/2011 09:56

well yes i also think there is a good case for an episode placed on that alternate reality with river and the gang, and if the timey wimey thing is right, none of them having a clue that it isn't real, cos donna didn't etc.

LilyBolero · 27/04/2011 09:58

Steven Moffat has said we will definitely find out who River is this series.

I know the monsters are called the Silence (or possibly Silents), I still think there could be a link with the Vashta Nerada - could be tenuous, but I think SM would like to link back (he is that sort of writer).

Aitch, I don't think he would be a future doctor, but I think there could well be a link in the plot between Dr Moon and the current episodes.

LilyBolero · 27/04/2011 09:58

(Also the vashta nerada appeared in the Dr Who internet game last year.....clue!)

LadyCornyOfSilk · 27/04/2011 10:38

the message from the little girl 'look behind you' reminded me of the trapped energy of the characters who had died in the Silence in The Library Episode who kept repeating themselves.

LadyCornyOfSilk · 27/04/2011 10:47

put it here!

mateysmum · 27/04/2011 10:49

River Song has to be a future love interest of the Dr. In Silence in the Library that's very much how she came across.
MS doesn't really do it for me - just don't think i want to shag himhe has the emotional depth that DT had who I wouldn't chuck out of bed. I don't think there is the connection between the current team that there was with Rose/Mickey/Sarah-Jane. Just want to slap Amy - sorry.
Thought last week's episode was the best MS episode yet though and the assassin in the space suit was clearly someone he knew. Can it be River though as she was also there as well.

LadyCornyOfSilk · 27/04/2011 10:50

maybe that's why she was wearing a space suit -so the other River didn't see her. Rose went back and saw her past self (with CE) and the doctor said that it was okay if her past self didn't see her.

I was wondering about Donna last night ...the red hair. She could be something to do with Donna...
