To think River Song is too old for MS's Doctor?

So this doctor is her doctor. Does anyone else think the actress and the character are too old for him? It's not just the physical age, he's just very young in general. River is mid 40s and so cool and sophisticated and the doctor is a bit of a twenty something goofball.

Or is it just me?

I do hope they don't drag this whole River Song thing out further than this series, it's getting old now. I was really pleased to enjoy Saturdays episode after not liking season 5 much at all, it seems to have settled in now, I liked the launching straight into a 2 part complicated story too, the plot of the opening episodes is usually a bit daft.

Amy has deffo had lessons, she was much less annoying/more restrained.

As for the next Doctor, I could live with Idris Elba, haven't actually seen him in anything, but he looks nice Grin.

I'd appreciate a doctor I could fancy, haven't had one yet.

PigWhisperer · 26/04/2011 23:48

Ratspeaker - the writer, Steven Moffat has said River isnt Amy or the Doctor's mum.

I think it is going to be something completely left field - I like the theory about River actually being the Tardis :o

Pixel · 26/04/2011 23:50

Crikey, all that flirting would be a bit off if she was his mum. [cconfused]

meditrina · 26/04/2011 23:51

I was wondering if she could be his mother - remember when Gallifrey came back and there was one female Time Lord who really stared at him, after covering her face (in a way a bit like a Weeping Angel?).

They're all Stephen Moffat episodes.

EgguStudent · 26/04/2011 23:52

Nah, we saw the Doctor's Mum once, didn't we? So I doubt it would be river.

Could it be a sister? But then why wouldn't she tell him? And there's definite flirting. So, actually, no. Because that would be odd.

LOVE the idea of River being the TARDIS Grin

Anyone know what's going on with Torchwood?

meditrina · 26/04/2011 23:52

x-posts! Didn't realise that theory had been ruled out.

Pixel · 26/04/2011 23:53

Duckypoo, I wasn't entirely joking about Rowan Atkinson. I do actually fancy him rotten in his doublet and hose in Elizabethan Black Adder [cblush].

duckypoo · 26/04/2011 23:55

This opposite timeline thing makes my head hurt, can't see how she would be his mum, would she not have to be very old when she gave birth, then as he got older she would have to get younger Confused????

Something Rory said about the finale of series 5 was interesting, River was saying that the Dr couldn't cross his own timeline because the universe would go kaboom, Amy said "well he has done it before" then Rory said "well the universe did explode".

That reassured me that they won't be using that again thank god, the big bang was a pile of illogical bollocks.

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/04/2011 23:55

oh im really enjoying the river song suspense thing....not knowing who she is - ill probably be disappointed with the reality as at the min im hooked! she is obviously really significant, and i think they can do a bit more with her yet, i really enjoy her in it. all his other companions are young women, i like the fact that she is a bit saucy and has obviously lived a bit!

how could anyone not fancy DT.....but i sort of fell in lust when i watched Casanova and its not worn off yet...Grin

GrimmaTheNome · 26/04/2011 23:55

I thought I was going to hate MS for not being DT, but he's really good when he's doing his 'old' thing.

But when - I hope not too soon - he regenerates (the thing last week must have been an anomaly of some sort which River has to fix by killing him or something) then I really think we need an older Doctor. And probably not a fanciable older man (no Alan Rickman then). Back to the more grandfatherly era (my first Dr was Jon Pertwee, then Tom Baker who wasn't fatherly but certainly not fanciable - and even after that, although Peter Davison was very cute as Tristan he wasn't in the least sexy as the doctor...).

Not sure who though - not Patrick Stewart, he's too ponderous. Someone like David Troughton (though maybe that'd be a bit weird come to think!) - but that sort of vintage and type.

duckypoo · 27/04/2011 00:01

I'd be happy with Rowan too Pixel, just watched Blackadder as it happens.

New series of Torchwood in the summer I adored children of earth. This one is called miracle day, and it's something about people not being able to die, hope it's good.

The split series is great this year, 7 weeks of Dr Who then not long till torchwood, then not long until the second half of the series, then Christmas, what's not to like.

duckypoo · 27/04/2011 00:07

I dunno, I liked DT, just a bit skinny, wouldn't say no mind, oddly his real accent puts me off too, not that I have anything against Scottish accents in general, just his.

I do think the dr should regenerate after this series, keep it fresh, or at least have new companions. DT only did 2 series plus specials didn't he?

I'd like to see a different kind of dr, maybe older, or even a male companion, give the whole lovesick puppy trope a rest (apart from Donna).

PigWhisperer · 27/04/2011 00:07

Talking of Torchwood, the person who River reminds me of most, with all her flirting is actually Capt Jack!

EgguStudent · 27/04/2011 00:13

I would love it if River was Captain Jack!

I wasn't a fan of the whole Children of Earth Torchwood thing. Well, I was, but the ending just seemed too shite for words.

I do adore MS. Paul Bettany would make an excellent doctor because he is beyond gorgeous

Pixel · 27/04/2011 00:16

The Children of Earth thing put me off Torchwood a bit actually which is a shame.

LilyBolero · 27/04/2011 00:17

yy to spacesuit when we first met River. And remember, that episode was called Silence in the Library. Silence. hmmmm......

LilyBolero · 27/04/2011 00:18

meditrina, think the bit where Gallifrey came back was RTD not SM.

I think the Vashta Nerada will be involved in this series, to tie in with Silence in the Library.

LilyBolero · 27/04/2011 00:19

Ds1 thinks that, far from saving the doctor by shooting the astronaut, Amy has actually CAUSED him to be shot in the future, in vengeance for her shooting the astronaut in 1969 if that makes sense.

Pixel · 27/04/2011 00:20

Could River be Capt Jack? what do you think? Grin

meditrina · 27/04/2011 00:21

I haven't been been watch Torchwood since the "joke" in the first (? or early) episode about Rohypnol.

PigWhisperer · 27/04/2011 00:23

Pixel :o

meditrina · 27/04/2011 00:24

LilyB - I meant just the homage to the Weeping Angels (which were SM).

PigWhisperer · 27/04/2011 00:26

Gosh Lily - yes! Oh now my head really hurts!

confuddledDOTcom · 27/04/2011 00:29

Enjoying this thread!

It's quite possible that he got to 200 years of this regeneration then died properly and then they manage to prevent that from happening, what is it the Doctor always says about time?

Richard E Grant has played the Doctor before Grin Wink although at the moment I don't think I could forgive him enough for being an evil doctor to accept him as the Doctor!

Oh can you imagine if Jack and River met? Obviously they can't be the same person though, because we know how both of them end up (ignoring my previous statement of course)

What was the joke about rohypnol?

Pixel · 27/04/2011 00:41

At the moment I'm thinking that the Doctor has messed things up by crossing his own time line or something else bad and somehow there were two of him knocking about. He's arranged with River (in space suit?) to kill one of him (the one who knows what he's done and how to put it right) as he trusts her (could be why she got put in prison?). He's invited his friends because he knows that someone has to dispose of the body but apologises for what he's putting them through.
He invited the younger version of himself as well so that the timeline would be put right (not sure about that bit) but if you notice he turned up later than everyone else and in a different location. I wonder if his invitation was slightly different to the other three to make sure he didn't get there too early and spoil everything?

I was going to have a bath and an early night tonight...
I've probably just spouted a complete load of rubbish and will cringe in the morning. Night all! Grin
