We all know the score, quickest route to the collective knowledge of planet Mumsnet is AIBU.

So I just spent 20 minutes up the Lilac tree in my garden coaxing a dear little budgie down.

Its now in a cardboard box next to my bed with some wild bird seed and some water.

It has a small wound on its wing Sad
What to do?

I cant really get it to an emergency vet atm.

It it a case of hoping its ok till morning and then getting it looked at? s/he is fairly perky and pretty tame. s/he let me hold it and only bit me a couple of times.

Its got a blue thing at the top of its beak - does that mean boy or girl?

Is there such a thing as wound powder for a budgie? Can I get something from the late chemist?

Aw what a shame. Poor Nigel, he has a place in MN hearts forever. Now you've got the cage coming I guess the DC think you shouldn't waste it. Raise a tiny glass of RR to his memory.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 20/04/2011 20:05

:(

Fly free Nigel

Megatron · 20/04/2011 20:31

Aw I'm so sad for your little fella, it actually brought a tear to my eye. You tried your best and I'm sure you made him comfy. Sad

hester · 20/04/2011 21:08

Oh no, I'm so sorry Sad Well done you on bringing some comfort to his last hours. He could have been alone, cold and hungry; instead he was safe and warm with you.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 20/04/2011 21:33

TFMDV - I am so sorry :( but at least he had a nice, safe, loved time with you and didn't die alone in the wild x I'm not suprised he died, I'm more suprised the vet said he was OK.... anyway, he will have a lot of little budgie friends and endless seed now - I can vouch that there are some lovely budgies there already! x

Awwww :(

I really thought he would be fine, after making it through last night, and the vet saying he was ok.

You couldnt have done any more for him MrsDV. xx

vis · 20/04/2011 21:39
Sad
Vallhala · 20/04/2011 21:40

Me too squeaky. :(

How sad. MrsDeVere, you're an angel and did your best... he would have suffered dreadfully had it not been for you.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 21:50

Now you are making me Blush

MrsDeVere, take comfort in the fact he found you in his hour of need. He landed in your Lilac tree for a reason. I smiled so much this morning after reading this thread, you renewed my faith in human nature. I finished my shift this evening still smiling, and raced to find out how you both had spent your day.
I was so sad to read that he died, despite your lovely nursing skills. Sad However, it's nice to know that there are still people in the world with kindness and compassion. You are a good person, MrsDeVere.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/04/2011 23:14

Heh heh, Mrs, it is genuinely making me Grin that there are more posts about this random budgie dying than my poor old d dad.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 20/04/2011 23:34

Bibbity - sorry to hear about your Dad... is that a current thread? x

thefirstMrsDeVere · 21/04/2011 10:05

Bibbity, so sorry about your Dad Sad

I am glad Nigel made you smile though Smile

Poor you x

Nigel's cage just arrived Sad

Its blue not yellow but I think I said they could send me whatever was the quickest if yellow was not available.

Its very pretty, a sort of cath kidsonesque blue, a bit kitsch.

Strumpypumpy · 21/04/2011 22:35

Aw. I'm just glad he had a name thatichose and a family in his final days [busad]. have you been bird shopping yet? Sounds like a lovely cage for Nigel II

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2011 01:17

:(

If I was called Nigel I'd fall off my perch too - I blame Strumpy

thefirstMrsDeVere · 22/04/2011 12:26

We now have a little blue budgie called Carrot.

I know it may seem a little soon, a little disrepectful....

But its what Nigel would have wanted

Al0uiseG · 22/04/2011 12:35

Hooray! How lovely for you and lucky old Carrot (Carrot??? ]hmm])

thefirstMrsDeVere · 22/04/2011 12:48

Its obvious isnt it?

I have a three year old.

Carrot = Parrot= Budgie.

That counts for logic in a three year olds brain y'know.

I feel a bit bad really, I have never bought a bird before. I always had rescue ones that I would bring home from work.

I think my ethics are slipping a bit. I will be nice to him though and he will get lots of time outside his pretty blue cage.

OP posts:
thefirstMrsDeVere · 22/04/2011 12:52

I wouldnt say this infront of Carrot. I mean I dont want to give him a complex, but he is not as pretty as Nigel. He IS lovely and I think he is definately very clever (quietly intelligent).

But there will only ever be one Nigel.

OP posts:
Al0uiseG · 22/04/2011 12:57

Oh Nigel, what have you started. :o

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 22/04/2011 13:55

For some reason I assumed he was called Carrot after Constable Carrot in the Discworld books. There is no good reason why I would assume this - I am clearly losing the last of my marbles.

Oh well - it was getting lonely in there anyway!! [bugrin]]

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 22/04/2011 14:06

SDTG - marbles are over rated huh [busmile]

TFMDV - lovely :) Give Carrot a fuss from Aunty Chippy! We do need a photo you realise!! how old is he? What are you teaching him to say??

It's very sad about little Nigel, but as I said before, he was lucky to have been with you for his last few hours, fed & loved and not to have died on his own. Poor little mite.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 22/04/2011 17:43

I have just been out and bought some toys and treats for Carrot (as well as some more happyland toys - just for research purposes you understand chipping )

He is still a bit cross with me.

I dont know how old he is, I didnt think to ask Shock

I dont know what I am going to teach him first but I suspect he will end up making a noise like a Tardis at some point. That is inevitable in this househould. Its what the other babies learnt first, why should this one be any different? [bugrin]
