We all know the score, quickest route to the collective knowledge of planet Mumsnet is AIBU.

So I just spent 20 minutes up the Lilac tree in my garden coaxing a dear little budgie down.

Its now in a cardboard box next to my bed with some wild bird seed and some water.

It has a small wound on its wing Sad
What to do?

I cant really get it to an emergency vet atm.

It it a case of hoping its ok till morning and then getting it looked at? s/he is fairly perky and pretty tame. s/he let me hold it and only bit me a couple of times.

Its got a blue thing at the top of its beak - does that mean boy or girl?

Is there such a thing as wound powder for a budgie? Can I get something from the late chemist?

I think you should call him Nigel. Very underused name. My dad had a bald budgie called Horace when he was a child. Glad you're not dead though, a gang of budgies could be terrifying.

ShoutyHamster · 20/04/2011 16:08

Call him 'Victor, The Pride of Walthamstow'

He needs a pedigree name of pomp and valour x

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 16:10

I dont think he is well Sad.

He doesnt look right.

I have put him in my vest

He's probably fine, they have a few hours of 'quiet time' a day. You'll find he's more perky in the morning and evening.

Stripes was probably the wrong word to use, lol, if you look on his head his feathers do they have a type of banding on them ? if so the further they are away from his nostrils the older he is.

Also does his eyes have irises, they are white in older birds.

Ours used to be let out once a day for a fly around the lounge- they used to love sitting on the curtain poles. Make sure to close curtain/blinds if you haven't got voiles at your windows though, otherwise he;'ll fly into the windowShock

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 16:34

He is back in his cage. I think he needs something to sit on but the proper cage should be here tommorow.

They are climbing birds arnt they? I think its because he is struggling to walk about that I am worried.

I cant look at his eyes and head because he has his back to me.

I will have a look later though.

I am not obessed nor nothing....

You might be being just a little pfb, perhaps? That's Precious First Budgie! Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 17:34

No, wish I was.

He was ok yesterday. I think he is dying. Sad
He was climbing on the grill yesterday. Now he is just lying there.

Not much poo in the cage either which is not a good sign.

Poor little bird. I hope I made his last days comfy.

backwardpossom · 20/04/2011 17:41

Aw, hope he's ok :(

He's very cute!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 20/04/2011 17:54

Ohhhh I am sorry, MrsDeVere - that was an inappropriate joke, and I didn't mean to upset you. I hope that the budgie is OK. Sad

ensure · 20/04/2011 18:15

Poor budgie, I hope he feels better soon.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 18:19

dont worry staying no offence taken. Smile

I am v.sad but I am suprised he lasted the night TBH. Its only because the vet said he as ok that I got my hopes up.

I wish I could help him. Poor little mite.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 18:26

OP posts:
thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 18:30

he has gone Sad

Poor little thing. I hope the brandy in the RR softened his path to budgie heaven.

Well that was a rollacoster ride.

Buddhastic · 20/04/2011 18:32

You have helped him...you rescued him and gave him care and attention.

My DD's found a budgie on the swimming pool step (we live abroad) once. I couldn't leave him there so he lived with us for a year. When he died my dh found me sitting crying at the bottom of our stairs with 'Bobby' in my hand. I know I looked a right fanny but I loved that wee bird!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 18:36

Thanks. I do feel v.sad. How silly.

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 20/04/2011 18:37

Oh no. :(

You're not silly at all. You did a lovely thing.

Buddhastic · 20/04/2011 18:37

Nope not silly you just care. I would rather be that type of person than any other. xx

ednurse · 20/04/2011 18:45

So sorry to hear he passed :( you've done a wonderful job.

bibbitybobbityhat · 20/04/2011 18:49

We all feel sad Sad.

Just think how much nicer his last few hours have been, including having a cuddle and having his picture taken and a drop of rescue remedy, than if you hadn't found him at all Sad.

Bless you all.

HazeltheMcWitch · 20/04/2011 18:50

Oh, MrsDV - really sorry for you, actually.
'Tis so good that you have done a nice thing.

CheerfulYank · 20/04/2011 18:51

Oh I'm sorry. It's brought a little tear to my eye. :(

Good for you for making his last hours comfy though, what a lovely thing to do.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 19:01

Thank you.

Nest of vipers indeed!

Where are the Daily Mail and the Wright Stuff now hey?

DCs are already asking for 'another one'.
Heartless little fiends.

Honeydragon · 20/04/2011 19:16

rip budgie Sad

Well done Mrs D you did everything and more x

LoopyLoopsNincompoop · 20/04/2011 19:54

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that. :(

Give me some time and I will write a fitting eulogy. It is just too soon right now.

Hoewever, you have just bought a cage, and a yellow one at that, so maybe you should get another one. Or a pair of lovely finches or something.
