We all know the score, quickest route to the collective knowledge of planet Mumsnet is AIBU.

So I just spent 20 minutes up the Lilac tree in my garden coaxing a dear little budgie down.

Its now in a cardboard box next to my bed with some wild bird seed and some water.

It has a small wound on its wing Sad
What to do?

I cant really get it to an emergency vet atm.

It it a case of hoping its ok till morning and then getting it looked at? s/he is fairly perky and pretty tame. s/he let me hold it and only bit me a couple of times.

Its got a blue thing at the top of its beak - does that mean boy or girl?

Is there such a thing as wound powder for a budgie? Can I get something from the late chemist?

Sorry, MrsDeVere... I've been hijacking your PFB thread... did you say he was blue, green or yellow? What are you going to call him?

CareyFakes · 19/04/2011 23:29

I'd call him Kirftar, the stealer of souls

Dreya · 19/04/2011 23:30

gordyslovesheep that really has tickled me! This is a wonderful thread. I love you too MrsDV! Have we given the little fellow a name yet?

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 23:30

I suppose you all think you are terribly funny dont you?

Laughing at my anguish. I hope you are all very proud of yourselves. You will be sorry if I wake up tommorow and find him all cold and dead (thats if I manage to sleep a wink).

lying he is green and yellow. Very pretty. Quite exceptionally pretty actually.
I darent name him yet. Just in case.

x post!

CareyFakes · 19/04/2011 23:32

Better to find him cold and dead than to find yourself that way...beware the bird

Vallhala · 19/04/2011 23:32

Cocoa.

That was the name of the green budgie I had as a child.

All green budgies should be named Cocoa.

HairyBeaver · 19/04/2011 23:32

Not really. It's only a bird. Perspective, here's 50p go buy some.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 23:34

Whatever.
Your just jealous.

Pfft.

CareyFakes thank you for the image of a budgie singing with a Barry White-esque voice that is now nestling in the front of my mind. A Barry White singing Budgie that seduces cats and badgers. Thanks.

Al0uiseG · 19/04/2011 23:41

How far can they fly? My neighbours budgie escaped last thursday. My guess is it went cross country to the A12 and zoomed straight to the Stow, negotiating the spaghetti flyover thing til it found Mdv, knowing that she was a softy for an injured bird.

seeker · 19/04/2011 23:48

I am wondering if it's an Indigo budgle? Or possibly even Crystal............?

rockinhippy · 20/04/2011 00:03

Sid Snot would be a good name for a green budgie Grin

bless you for taking him in & looking after him mrsDV I'm hoping its just a wound from a wild bird attack, so he's going to survive & you can keep him :)

all the parakeet & woodpecker talk is making me really miss them, I used to get them on my london balcony all the time - round here its flying rats & flying shit machines - commonly known as sea gullsHmm

SacreLao · 20/04/2011 02:10

Aww poor little budgie :(

Reminds me of a time I rescued an injured robin that proberly wished I hadn't bothered. We found it in the garden with a nasty injury late at night so set it up in an old (but tall) hamster cage with water until the morning when we could get help.

Put the little thing in a quiet dark room as recomended but sadly didn't think about closing the window (very warm night) and my cat climbed in during the night while I was asleep and killed the robin :(

Think he would have been better taking his chances in the garden. Still feel guilty about it now.

LostInSockLand · 20/04/2011 02:34

I had a budgie when I was an irresponsible teen. My mum fed him, cleaned him out blah blah and he pecked the shit out of her whenever he could. Obviously I spent no time with him at all...oh ok, about 20 mins a week. He luuuurrrved me though, would sit on my hand quite happily. The budgie was a dude Grin.

Not so long ago I managed to get a blackbird from one of my cats...dd and I sat with the little guy all cuddled up for about 5 mins until he carked it...then we buried him in my best fooking hand towel. Cried like a baby....me I mean not dd Grin

CheerfulYank · 20/04/2011 02:56

Poor little budgie! (First time I've ever typed that word in my life...here we just call 'em parakeets)

I'm sure he's gifted, darling.

I guarantee he'll learn to read far before the other budgies.

CinnabarRed · 20/04/2011 06:19

Update please, MrsDV? Pretty please?

happymole · 20/04/2011 07:03

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 20/04/2011 07:20

geordieminx · 20/04/2011 08:18

Gooseberrybushes · 20/04/2011 08:20

what an astonishing coincidence that the first person to click on this thread is connected with bird rescue

sorry I have too much time on my hands but really that is remarkable

Honeydragon · 20/04/2011 08:22

Yup first thread I came back to this morning hope both mrs v and the budgie are still with us Wink

thefirstMrsDeVere · 20/04/2011 08:31

Hello
Sorry for late update but I had to have a cup of tea.
Budgie is still alive! I just checked again before I typed that - just incase he had died in the last 3 minutes.

He has been eating - so clever. He is at the back of the cage now looking a bit grumpy. I am hoping thats because he is not a morning bird rather than him about to, you know..
It could be that he is next to the cot and DC5 has just done the stinkiest nappy ever blueegh. I bet he wished he stayed in that Lilac tree now.

He said his first words last night! Well he screeched a bit but it sounded like Mummy. Bless him. So advanced for his age.

Right better change stinky, have a shower and get him down the vets (budgie not stinky).

Who wants to guess how much this is going to cost me?
