We all know the score, quickest route to the collective knowledge of planet Mumsnet is AIBU.

So I just spent 20 minutes up the Lilac tree in my garden coaxing a dear little budgie down.

Its now in a cardboard box next to my bed with some wild bird seed and some water.

It has a small wound on its wing Sad
What to do?

I cant really get it to an emergency vet atm.

It it a case of hoping its ok till morning and then getting it looked at? s/he is fairly perky and pretty tame. s/he let me hold it and only bit me a couple of times.

Its got a blue thing at the top of its beak - does that mean boy or girl?

Is there such a thing as wound powder for a budgie? Can I get something from the late chemist?

So long as the box has ventilation holes, isnt in a cold place, and is in a quiet place, he will be fine over night hopefully. We have plenty of bird stuff that we no longer use, but are in South East London unfortunately.

Vallhala · 19/04/2011 21:33

Oh... and keep him warm (so not in the bathroom which gets cold overnight, for example), offer him a VERY shallow drink at the opposite end of the box to where he's sitting so he doesn't soak himself. A jam jar lid is ideal for this.

If you need either of the above organisations and have any problems reaching them please pm me as I have phone numbers for the owners of both.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 21:35

CAT BASKET!!! I have one of those in the loft!

He has already knocked the water over. I knew he would. i dont want him getting wet feet.

Is niger seed ok? It not toxic to budgies is it? I have given him some all season wild bird stuff too.

I'm off up the loft....

(As an aside, I have a bird cage which has had great use the past couple of summers for injured birds. Got it from Freecycle just for that purpose but have often used one of the cats' baskets. Cats have been singularly unimpressed! )

squeaky, SE London eh? Give my home town my love! :)

BombayBadonkadonks · 19/04/2011 21:41

Has anyone tweeted for help?

CinnabarRed · 19/04/2011 21:43

MrsDV, you sound lovely!

seeker · 19/04/2011 21:46

I used to have a blue budgie called Smiley. He was lovely. [nostalgia emoticon]

dementedma · 19/04/2011 21:46

good one bombay Grin

I really love this thread. It's heartwarming, funny and caring. But my favourite bit is your blender box home, a little worrying for a small bird, and the concern about poking a stick into the box. I think I have a crush on you MrsDV. You are very kind. But realistic. Bet the DC are loving the Easter hols drama. Show and tell next week could be interesting! Valhalla, I know it's not funny but the RSPCA being trigger happy Shock

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 19/04/2011 21:54

I hope his family hear where he is, it's really sad when they 'escape' :( If not, I know where he'll be loved :)

If he's been hurt by a cat, be prepared for him not to make it until the morning, cat bites are toxic to birds :(

Vallhala · 19/04/2011 22:33

strumpy, when I said trigger happy, I meant it. :(

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 22:38

Ok.
Update.
He is safely in the cat box. He has his food. Some water in the top of a lid.
He has my meat mallet to perch on (I dont use it, I dont really know what its for tbh).

He is climbing on the metal grill at the front now bless him.

Bad news though. The more I handle him the worse his injury looks Sad. I will take him to the vets tommorow. We have a pets at home up the road and I think they will see him if I take him in. If the vet isnt there they will have a bird person.
Poor little thing.
I think I love him now.
I fall easily.

Thank you all for your help.

Valhalla as the owner of two GSD, that is horrific. I didn't doubt you. They are a hideous organization.

hairfullofsnakes · 19/04/2011 22:41

let us know what happens with the wee bird x

Vallhala · 19/04/2011 22:42

Two GSD here too strumpy, a b&t and a long haired white. :) They have a Lab X friend to keep them in order too!

hester · 19/04/2011 22:54

Get a grip, MrsDV, you have multiple children and a dude perm to care for. DO NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH THE BIRD.

When you're fully recovered, I'll tell you about my attempts to 'rescue' a pigeon, found on Streatham Common. And which no doubt wished it had been left to take its chances there.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 22:56

But he is so sweet and all green and yellowy.
When he was in my Lilac tree he looked like one of those kitsch japanese postcards.

He is looking at me...

It's turning into Pet Rescue week on MN Smile.

hester · 19/04/2011 22:59

Oh dear, you're a lost woman. I can do nothing more for you.

Do you know, we have green parakeets here, nesting in the copper beeches opposite my house? It's like SW London meets Honolulu.

CareyFakes · 19/04/2011 23:00

Kill it, humanly with a hammer

squeakytoy · 19/04/2011 23:03

We have parakeets in the garden all the time.. along with every other sort of wild bird you can imagine... including a pair of woodpeckers who never appear when I have the camera at the ready.

parakeets in the garden

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/04/2011 23:03

How picturesque. We mostly have pigeons with deformed feet in East London.

I thought this one was a cockateil (sp) when I saw him fly into the tree. I am not sure I would have climbed up to get one of those grumpy little buggers.

Aw he is soo clever. He is climbing up and down with his wee beak.
I think he may be some sort of special budgie, you know gifted.

He is still looking at me..

OP posts:
CareyFakes · 19/04/2011 23:04

I wouldn't trust it

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/04/2011 23:07

Vallhalla... Thank you so much, I've signed the online petition and I will NEVER, EVER support the barbaric RSPCA. What a sad excuse for humanity they are. I'm going to tell everyone I know to support other organisations rather than them. I'm a big fan of Dogs Trust, I've been sponsoring them for years.

Vallhala · 19/04/2011 23:07

Methinks Carey feels that you'll wake up in the morning to find the cat carrier open and the family silver missing! :o

MDV, he's looking at you because he's trying to tell you he wants to come and live with me!
