I have a bit of an addiction for Harry Potter fanfic stories Blush of the non-slash variety

I like potionsandsnitches.com especially but sometimes I venture out into the big wide world of fanfiction

and I have wondered for a while about stories which are adult rated and refer to "non-con" or "chan" sexual relationships between adults and underaged kids (HP and his friends, usually)

shurely these stories are illegal? You can't just write lurid fantasies about child abuse and rape and post them on the net, can you?

And if it isn't illegal, well it bloody well should be

We only read non dirty stuff by accident!

Dharma, some of my favourites are:

The strangely bizarre yet fucking marvellous Seven Preposterous Things by Bloodcult Of Freud, which is not finished and hardly ever updated. It's a SS/HG, DM/Bulstrode fic, Voldemort wins, and the whole thing is so strange. The summary is: "Dark Comedy and Angst. Graphic Sex, Character Death, Pimples, Gore and Unflattering Characterizations"

Adventure post-war fic The Man Who Sold The World by Meggory. This has finished recently, though it was abandoned for so long I haven't even read the last few chapters, so it might all go to shit, for all I know.

Send Not To Know by Subersa is one of my favourites, it's a little angsty and a little fluffy, quite short and Christmassy.

You might have to register to read those last 2, but you should. If these don't turn your stomach, I have LOADS more...There are a lot of quite good time turner fics out there featuring SS/HG.

MrsChemist · 07/04/2011 22:40

Just been reminded of this as well.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 07/04/2011 22:40

MrsChemist - she was a total plagiarist, which is why all her stuff got pulled Grin She also made a fortune conning people into donating.

LaWeasel · 07/04/2011 22:42

you can read bible fanfiction on ff.net.

That's always made me Hmm I mean you'd have to be pretty devout to be obsessive enough to want to - but if you're that devout surely it would be blasphemy?!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 07/04/2011 22:42

Dharma, that should be SUBVERSA, not subersa. And the voldemort wins bit applies to the second fic.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 07/04/2011 22:43

Bible ff?????? Hmm

PfftTheMagicDragon · 07/04/2011 22:44

MrsChemist, that link is fucking funny. I cannot stop laughing at the Weasley twins and Lance Bass

DharmaLovesGreg · 07/04/2011 22:45

Thanks Pfft will have a look tomorrow as I am off to bed now, and why for God's sake (see what I did there) would you ff the bible?

Glitterandglue · 07/04/2011 22:48

My best friend, who supposedly is not interested in fic (but who encouraged me to write something slashing him and someone we worked with...who he supposedly also didn't fancy) the other day sent me some fanart of Jesus/the Devil he happened to stumble across. Grin

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 07/04/2011 23:09

He was only swearin because he had a HEADAKE u haterzzz!!!

oh wait, hang on, BIBLICAL slashfic? Genius. There's enough surpressed homoeroticism, gore and unflattering characterization in there to keep 'em all busy.

givemushypeasachance · 07/04/2011 23:23

Wow, I never thought I'd come across an 8 page long thread about fanfiction on MN!

The idea that writing about an illegal activity should in itself be a crime is one I've never understood. Nothing has ever actually happened, no-one has been harmed or suffered a loss, there was no intention of anything actually happening or anyone being hurt - if there was, then the plotting/grooming person would be charged with an actual proper offence. Yet some people believe that a person who writes a few paragraphs of descriptive text should be fined or go to prison for what they wrote? I find it very worrying.

"Simulated child pornography" of a visual type is now illegal in many countries. Yes, you can be convicted for drawing a picture of a child engaging in a sexual act. Even if it is just a "funny" sketch of Bart Simpson, a fictional character, performing a sexual act on David Cameron - that would count. That's a bit odd, but surely not criminal. How long before fiction follows in its footsteps?

If you think that fanfiction depicting underage sex or a teenage character being paired up with an adult is so wrong it should be banned or criminalised, then why not criminalise fiction that includes descriptions of all other illegal activities too. Like others have mentioned, rape and dub-con "dubious consent" fiction is pretty common in different fandoms with solely adult characters. That's illegal. What about murder? Should people be prevented from writing about fictional characters killing each other?

I write fanfiction on a very casual basis because I like participating in the fandoms, because I enjoy some casual creative writing without the pressure of inventing my own original characters, and because it's nice to share what I've written with other fans. Sometimes this strays into adult topics and, given the characters I "work with", lines of consent are not always clear. They're adults though, so is that okay?

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 08/04/2011 00:17

Should I admit I'm one of the mods on the comm SoH linked to...?

There is loads of good Dean/Cas fic on there, but there is also fair amount of really bad stuff as well. Here is a good resource for recs and she's grouped them by theme so no accidental clicking on something that squicks.

Another good resource is delicious The more times it's been bookmarked, generally the better it is and the tags normally give an indication of content.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 08/04/2011 00:23

Oh and everybody should love Misha Collins, he's fantastic. In fact he's so fantastic that there's a section of fandom who believe he's a tulpa wished into existence by the collective fandom id. He is complete fanservice in a rather delightfully wrapped package.

LDNmummy · 08/04/2011 00:27

Its a Japanese culture thing. I read alot of comics and watch a hell of alot of anime and it is something very common in Japanese culture. Its not exactly peadophilia, it is this wierd blurry place between the characters as the children and the image of them as adults.

Pocketsocks · 08/04/2011 02:41

Hmmm I seem to have been dragged half asleep into a conversation.
Did someone say Dean?

There is currently a lot of discussion between my friends and I as to if Dean/Cas is like chocolate and peanut butter, or chocolate and cheese.
I'm currently on the fence and starting to think I should read more.

Although currently Merlin ff calls to me, unfortunatly for me it's practically all slash on FF.net and while I don't mind it, it doesn't work for me with Merlin and Arthur. Anyone know anywhere with less slash?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 08/04/2011 07:53

LOL SGB Grin

takewhatyoucan If I was going to recommend some Twi-fic to you that wasn't totally depraved, then I would go with The Woods are Lovely, Dark and Deep

Tee2072 · 08/04/2011 08:07

I am not sure how you could write Merlin fic without slashing Merlin/Arthur. The slash is written into the show!!! I swear they write that show just for the slashers.

Pocketsocks...chocolate and peanut butter for sure. Grin

I can't speak to Twilight as I refuse to read the books. Vampires shouldn't sparkle. End of. Wink

Oh and the only good Buffy/Twilight cross is 'Buffy staked Edward. The End.' Grin

MrsChemist · 08/04/2011 08:08

Really pfft? I'd been told it's because she's got a book out now. Learn something new every day

I find elrond/Picard the most amusing/horrifying.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 08/04/2011 08:10

Tee, I can't remember the last time I read a fic where the vampires sparkle. But that's mainly because I read human fics, and only a few vampire ones. That's the great thing about fic though, we get rid of all the shitty ideas Grin

BelfastBloke · 08/04/2011 08:46

I read a lot of this thread yesterday, and woke up this morning still pissed off and offended that the OP thinks fiction should be ILLEGAL.

These characters are NOT REAL. The fact that they are written as children is only one aspect of a reader's mental interaction with the literary effect known as characterisation.

Readers project many things onto characters as they read, and the chosen age surely becomes less and less important the more you engage with them. A similar effect would happen if they were robots, or gods, or rabbits.

Tee2072 · 08/04/2011 08:48

Okay, maybe they don't sparkle in ff, but I understand the sparkle in the books!!

My head is also still reeling at bible ff. Really? REALLY?!?! ::shakes head::

TandB · 08/04/2011 08:52

Thanks for that link to My Immortal. The only fanfiction I have read was some Lord of the Rings stuff ages ago, but if there are gems like that I might have to start reading again!

I haven't laughed that much for ages.

Question - how exactly does one "french passively". Sounds interesting...

TandB · 08/04/2011 08:55

Still reading - still laughing

"Voldemort got a dude-ur-so-retarded look on his face".

Best. Line. Ever

PfftTheMagicDragon · 08/04/2011 09:09

Tee, yes there is copious sparkling in the books. Everyone that writes FF though, agrees that the books are toss. Grin

"Voldemort got a dude-ur-so-retarded look on his face".

HAHA!

WassaAxolotl · 08/04/2011 09:16

I've spent -far- -too- -much- a bit of time reading HP fanfic, and I've never read a child abuse one or non-con that glorified it, or even seemed masturbatory. I expect there are some, but I think you'd have to actively search for them.

Just ones that attempted to explore issues and situations and how-would-these-characters-have-reacted-if. Which is what literature is for, surely?
