i want my dd to wear pretty things in her hair

everything i put in her hair, she pulls out.
her fringe is long and gets in her eyes, can't get it cut as she will not stay still long enough.

i just wants her hair to look nice, instead of it looking like the end of a mop

The title of the thread says it all. "I want my dd to wear pretty things in her hair"

Not "I want to keep my dd's hair out of her eyes" or "How do I persuade my dd to keep clips in her hair" but "I want her to wear pretty things in her hair"

Enough said.

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 14:51

People are reading way to much into it. She is a small DC and she doesn't like things in her hair-end of story. Don't put them in her hair-get it cut. Later on she may want it longer, she may want things in her hair. I agree with sprinkles-insist on your DD dressing the way that you want her to dress and it may well backfire. If OP likes things in hair she can put them in her own hair!

altinkum, the issue is that the kid is only two and keeps taking the hair ornaments out

presumably because they irritate her sensible little scalp

a big difference, I think, between a 2yo and a 5yo

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 15:15

The DD couldn't care less about looks-she doesn't want things in her hair. A lot of places would go out of business if people didn't want to look pretty, handsome etc-they tried it in China and it didn't work! What is wrong with looking pretty?

PeterAndreForPM · 04/04/2011 15:20

sensible scalp ?

I meant sensitive

although sensible works too Smile

Dittany, am curious. Do you let your DDs wear pink?

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 04/04/2011 16:49

It's not about forbidding DDs to wear pink if they want to do so. It;s about it being wrong to force DDs to wear pink, or have bows and slides in their hair against their wishes. That is wrong. Just as it's wrong to refuse to let a DS play with dolls or wear a pink tutu if he wants to.

PeterAndreForPM · 04/04/2011 16:53

sgb, you have just reminded me of a sweet memory

ds, aged 4 with a tea towel on his head (for long hair) and insisting that he was a princess

his big sis also used to dress him up in her old frocks and they both pushed the poor cat around the living room in a dolls pram

< as you were >

MigratingCoconuts · 04/04/2011 18:23

I used to make my baby brother wear dresses and call himself Jane...really sad day for me when he went to school and learned assertiveness Grin

MigratingCoconuts · 04/04/2011 18:25

sgb, well done for summing up what we have been trying to say all through this thread!!!

There is nothing wrong with the bloody clips...its the making a girl wear what she doesn,t want in her hair....

PeterAndreForPM · 04/04/2011 18:25

my ds was "Jessica" Grin

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 19:09

That brought back memories-I used to dress up my younger brother-put clips in his hair and call him Susan-until he protested! It didn't do him any harm.

PeterAndreForPM · 04/04/2011 19:13

Hey, we could turn this thread around Smile

ds used to play with a pretend hoover (one of those daft Dyson toys) and a pretend cooker

DH was totally cool with it (as expected) but FIL was mortified Wink

I think he thought we were "turning him gay"

ds is 11 now, and still handy wih a duster and has long hair (that is his own, not a tea towel Smile )

and FIL is still dubious

Grin

what a dinosaur

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 19:21

My DS went to ballet lessons when small. They all played with a toy kitchen. There is a lot of nonsense talked -the DD merely didn't want anything in her hair-I bet she has similar trouble with a sun hat in the summer.

ChristinedePizan · 04/04/2011 19:25

Can I correct an assertion that rockinhippy made about something that SGB said? She didn't say that circumcision was the same as putting hairclips into a girl's hair when she didn't want to wear them, she said it was part of a continuum. And there is a massive difference between the two.

SGB, dittany, SGM et al have said everything else I want to say.

PeterAndreForPM · 04/04/2011 19:28

gawd yeah, neither of my kids would ever wear a sun hat for more than 10 secs

I hunted high and low for ones with strings under the chin, then shit myself up when I realised they could get bloody strangled !

and socks and shoes ??

gah

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 19:33

My DS had a lovely pair of denim dungarees when he was OP's DD's age and he looked gorgeous in them! However he found them uncomfortable and refused to wear them (lay face down and cried!) There was no point-why upset a DC because you happen to like the look?! All the gender stuff on here is nothing to do with it-she simply doesn't want things in her hair-so don't put them in!!

MigratingCoconuts · 04/04/2011 19:42

my DD (4 this weekend) like the 'makebelieve princesses' book we have. we all get to be a princess and choose what pretty things with will wear in our hair...I think its just as lovely as my DD making her megablocks dinosaurs eat the little people....

Whatever floats their little boats..

girliefriend · 04/04/2011 19:50

I would def grow the fringe out and once it gets a bit longer just tie it up in a little top knot on top of her head!! I hate really don't like seeing little ones who constantly have hair in their eyes, my gorgeous little nephew who has beautiful blonde curls has to have his hair clipped out of his eyes if he comes to my house!!!!

She will eventually let you sort her hair out but she is still very little Smile
