To have asked the receptionist to switch off the Lady GaGa video...

My DS is deeply embarrassed after a visit to the orthodontist. We were waiting in the reception, which had a music channel showing on a big screen - there were ten or so children/teens waiting for appointments. My v young DD was with us.

Anyway Lady GaGa came on with the video to 'Telephone' or whatever it's called. I've not watched it before but was a bit [shocked] at the video. When it got to the bit where she's wearing nothing but a bit of gaffer tape I (quietly) asked the receptionist if she would please switch it off as it wasn't appropriate viewing for my young daughter. It was quickly switched off without comment.

I then spent another five minutes being given snotty looks by other teens in the room and my DS is saying I need to 'stop being a grumpy old granny'.

AIBU?

I do like the name change to FattyAcid! Very clever. I thought there was ample evidence against Arbuckle actually- it was a very nasty killing

Moomoo YANBU. I went on youtube to see what the fuss was about (have 15 year old DD so really should know Blush ) and you have to sign to say you are 18 or over to view it.

So, I can't understand why anyone thinks this is acceptable waiting room content when there are warnings all over youtube saying it is explicit and not for under 18s.

Who cares if DS was embarrassed by you, it's a parent's job to embarrass their children and to protect them even if that means unpopularity.

Christina I must say I like the cut of your jib. (Have just come from soap thread :) )

I haven't seen the telephone video. But my then 7 year old DD told me that she really likes Lady Gaga "because she invented the telephone". I was driving and I almost ran off road laughing and told her we would soon be googling "Alexander Graham Bell".

I have however seen the Alejandro video and it is way to raunchy for my very grown up eyes. The orthodontist is not a place I would want to see such things. In a night club? ok. But not at the doctor, surely.

Fatty was the cleverest boy detective in The Five Find-Outers too. He would foil PC Goon regularly.

Right BoF that's my new mission. Find and Foil.

YANBU and well done for saying something.

These music channels are not appropriate for communal areas, especially where children are waiting.

This is the sort of thing the LGBG campaign is talking about, surely, images in society communicating to young girls that their bodies are a commodity, for men's pleasure. Can't believe people are saying YABU Hmm

illgetyoubutler · 31/03/2011 18:57

Exactly madhairday

TheFirst "Does anyone really not think that these sorts of videos and the sexualisation of children are not connected? I dont mean the sexual abuse, I mean the way that our children are dressing, acting, dancing, speaking, thinking?" They are behaving this way because most parents lack the tools themselves to pass on on how to navigate pop culture and teach true self-esteem. Plus, if a child is dressing in a manner that is provocative, low rider jeans, short skirts, isn't that a parent that is buying those items for them?

I am tired also of seeing images of young men being parading and pressured to show their abs while a bunch of middle age women holler whahoo's at them, like I've seen on The Ellen Show numerous times. Isn't that a bit disturbing as well? I wouldn't feel comfortable with my teenage boy being oggled at by a bunch of randy 40+ year olds.

The dentist office shouldn't have on a program that has an 18+ rating videos anyhow. But I don't think the news should be broadcasted either publicly.

GotArt · 01/04/2011 01:02

I agree too mad

thefirstMrsDeVere · 01/04/2011 14:04

I agree got. Of course it is up to parents and carers to guide their children but why does it have to be so hard?

I had to teach my DD and DS1 about the dangers of crack and smack when they were very young but I didnt want to. I was forced to because I was kicking crackheads off my stairwell every morning. I hope I gave them the right guidence, I would have done it anyway, but I would have prefered to have done it at a later time.

Thats how I feel about all this sexualisation. We can talk to our children and help them process it but they are bombarded. It comes at us from every angle.

We now have parents who have been almost entirely bought up within this culture so to them it is normal. It is likely they are going to teach their own children that it is normal. And so it goes on.

GotArt · 01/04/2011 17:58

Its a good thing you headed them in the right direction before learning something on the playground. Its unfortunate, but at least you had a very good example to show them right there in front of them. Its unfortunate that our world has gone this far into sexualization as a commodity, but a great example to begin talking about it. The news has some very horrific imagery being displayed at the dinner hour too. News is also about making money and creating hegemony within our culture. Not helping us navigate our world.
