To have asked the receptionist to switch off the Lady GaGa video...

My DS is deeply embarrassed after a visit to the orthodontist. We were waiting in the reception, which had a music channel showing on a big screen - there were ten or so children/teens waiting for appointments. My v young DD was with us.

Anyway Lady GaGa came on with the video to 'Telephone' or whatever it's called. I've not watched it before but was a bit [shocked] at the video. When it got to the bit where she's wearing nothing but a bit of gaffer tape I (quietly) asked the receptionist if she would please switch it off as it wasn't appropriate viewing for my young daughter. It was quickly switched off without comment.

I then spent another five minutes being given snotty looks by other teens in the room and my DS is saying I need to 'stop being a grumpy old granny'.

AIBU?

Not appropriate viewing for a waiting room largely for children!

Well done OP, good on you.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2011 16:02

Surely places where the general public are (and possibly children) should only be showing the equivalent of 'U' certification - which means suitable for all ?

It's not about being 'individually' offended it's about it being suitable for public spaces.

If you're following upahills argument to it's logic conclusion you're saying that 18 certificate porn films are suitable 'because you are watching it'

Dinnae be daft. Are you really wanting to live in a world where public spaces can be filled with adult images with no thoughts for minors?

If the receptionist hadn't turned it off I would have had to take previously sexually abused foster child out to wait in the car as she is not allowed to watch content aimed at adults and older teenagers.

But the tv wasn't showing anything that had been banned or put on restricted viewing. If it was rated a certain way fair enough. But in this case Moo has took it on herself to be the morality police whether other people were enjoying the recording or not.

The record is on for 3 and half mins or so and because of her the rest of the waiting room would have to watch Doctors or Cash in the attic or some other shite probably for the rest of the afternoon.

Mrswhiskerson · 30/03/2011 17:34

Yanbu as I'm gettiN g older I'm finding myslf more and more shocked at how women are portrayed in the media , I know lady ga gas ladygarden better than my own and rihanna fellating bannanas and singing about whips and chains is something that should be reserved for porn channels not day time tv
and it sends out a shocking and very worrying message to our children . Even Jesse j who is seen as cool and a good role model is still
gyrating in a leotard getting photgraphed with her bum out and singing about doing it like a dude .

Yabu, sex is everywhere, and if seeing womens bodies wasn't so taboo, children would grow up with less complexes in this country. Too much sex taboo IMO.

By doing things like that you realise you will prob have the opposite effect and push your son to rebel by seeking sexual stuff out on his own when he might have not bothered before?

Besides, if more people had confidence in teaching their children about sex and human bodies and the like, it wouldn't be an issue. Have more faith in your ability to teach your children the right's and wrong's of sex and the portrayal of sex in the media instead of imposing your views on other people.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/03/2011 18:15

What? Confused

'Sex' is nothing to do with gyrating, sexual explicit, dominatrix material or language calling women 'ho's' (all things that happen in 15 music videos).

I was very happy yesterday to explain to foster dd what oral and anal sex was and what 'rape' was as they were all questions asked by her.

This doesn't mean that I would want her exposed to sexually explicit material not aimed at her age group.

Please stop assuming that people who object are uptight prudes who fuck with the lights off in their winceyette knickers. Hmm

She can watch any age appropriate stuff. And I expect public places to be showing age appropriate material rather than 15's or 18's.

AccioPinotGrigio · 30/03/2011 18:20

winceyette knickers PHWOOOOOOOOAR.

LDNmummy · 30/03/2011 18:22

Had to look up winceyette knickers, very sexy IMO!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 30/03/2011 18:45

This isnt sex it is the commercialisation of women's bodies.

I am happy for my children to learn that there is nothing wrong with sex. I am not going to teach them that there is nothing wrong with the way women are depicted in videos.

MissGreatBritain · 30/03/2011 18:50

YANBU. I complained to the ASA about the ads for "Bill and Tom make a Porno" (or whatever it was called) being everywhere, as I don't think it's appropriate for young children to be exposed to the idea of pornography. And basically I think this is much the same. Blatant soft porn, along with the ideas of bondage and "lipstick lesbianism" are not just wrong for young children to look at - I don't want to see them at the dentist's either thank you very much.

Katiekitty · 30/03/2011 19:02

thefirstmrsdevere good point in your post (about 1.15pm)

When you go into the Body Shop, when you buy something, where I live, they always ask you to then sign their petition against violence used towards women. The music they play doesn't seem to reflect this one bit.

Animation · 30/03/2011 19:04

thefirstMrsDeVere

Orthodentist appointments are in school time and the kids are generally sat there with their parents in their school uniforms - I don't that's the time and place for watching women in this sexualized way

Paperview actually, no, I'm not offended by lesbianism - why should I be? And the video didn't get as far as the 'murder' bit....

And to various posters - I don't give a chuff what people chose to watch in their own homes - I'm not trying to be the 'morality police'.

I just don't want my pre-school children to watch videos I believe to be unsuitable. That's my choice; which is taken away from me if the videos are being shown in a public place during the day (a public place full of children, btw).

YANBU - I once complained at the local car dealership as ds and I were being subjected to Jeremy Kyle whilst waiting to check the car in for a service. To add insult to injury, we were kept waiting because the receptionist was busy discussing the programme with one of the mechanics!

pozzled · 30/03/2011 19:25

YANBU. it's not appropriate viewing for children. Doesn't matter whether the other people in the waiting room were enjoying it, it shouldn't be shown in that kind of situation.

What people watch in their own homes is their own business, but not being exposed to those kind of videos is also a valid choice and should be respected.

littleducks · 30/03/2011 19:32

YANBU, I would be horrified if that was on in a waiting room, my dentist just has a video of the correct way to brush your teeth!

I would be interested to see what the certification of the video is. If it was 12/15 would teh othodonist be breaking the law 'showing' it with young children present?

Fresh2death · 30/03/2011 19:44

HUGE overreaction

FattyArbuckel · 30/03/2011 19:48

Soft porn is not appropriate for public viewing yet tbh it is all around us
There is a lot of stuff that is publicly acceptable that is pretty damn degrading to women imo

Fresh2death · 30/03/2011 19:50

a woman showing flesh of her own accord is degrading? so if she choses/ wants to its degrading and if she is pressured/ forced it is degrading ...

nethunsreject · 30/03/2011 19:50

Yanbu

FattyArbuckel · 30/03/2011 19:51

flesh generally shown for cash not of own accord
