To settle a debate between 'but Muuuuuuuuuuuum, no one else goes to be at that time' and me being a good mummy with loving concern for his health and wellbeing Grin

At 13 I was still out with my friends. I had to be home by 9.30, and bed was about 10.30

Oh Bugger!!! Grin

Bed was 10 for me at that age. If you think he's not getting enough sleep, tell him he can only read after 9 or something, then his brain can start shutting down at least.

TooManyButtons · 03/03/2011 21:40

DD (13) has to be in bed for 9.00 during the week, but is allowed to read or watch tv for a bit.

scaryteacher · 03/03/2011 21:44

Ds is 15 and has to be in bed by 2215. YANBU during the week.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2011 21:46

Dd is 13. In bed for 8.00. Reads til 8.30.

AgentZigzag · 03/03/2011 21:47

We tell our 10 YO to turn her light out from reading at 10.

So 9 could be a tad early?

I don't blame you trying it on though Grin

MittzyBittzyTeenyWeeny · 03/03/2011 21:48

Am much more flexible at the weekend but just feel (for me) that it is late enough. Getting him up in the morning is tough enough!

10.00pm for DS1 during the week.

Themumsnot · 03/03/2011 21:50

My 13 year old in bed by 9, reads for an hour, lights out by 10. In practice, I sometimes forget to go look and then find she is still reading at 10.30.
Laurie - 8 for 8.30? Wow! How do you manage that? Grin

Hatesponge · 03/03/2011 21:51

I used to be in bed at that age.

My two (9 and 12) are still up now. DS2 will be asleep soon, but if I am lucky the eldest will be in bed by 11 Hmm

If I could send them to bed at 9 without WW3 breaking out, I probably would Grin

I've just hauled my 13 year-old out of bed (reading not sleeping) and told her to get a shower. After 1.5 hours of sports training.

When clean and fragrant, however, she turns her light out at about 9.30 on school nights, though on Thursdays she doesn't get in until nearly 9.

She usually bounces out of bed at 6.30. If she was clearly tired in the morning then I might try to get her to sleep earlier.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/03/2011 21:53

It's not hard, she needs her sleep and wakens at 7 ish no problem. She has a later night with you club (9) and scouts (10).

And dh and I go to bed at 10 so we watch adult programmer before then and we need adult time.

pointythings · 03/03/2011 21:57

YANBU, I was in bed by 9 at that age except on weekends and holidays.

My 2 are 8 and 10, bedtime is 8, they get 15 mins reading time and that's it. Weekdays they're up at 6.15 am and weekends are for tanking up on sleep.

We're flexible for special occasions and holidays though, and they do sleep longer if they go to bed ridiculously late.

There is a strong correlation between getting enough sleep (should be 10 hours for a teenager) and achievement at school) so hang tough.

DS is 14 and bed by 9, lights out by 930-945 but he's quite often done it earlier. Any later and he is a complete wreck the next day. I hate teaching kids who haven't had enough sleep and find DS needs more now (puberty, growth spurt etc) than when he was younger. Luckily he has the sense to see how not getting enough sleep affects him at school so we've not had too many arguments (yet!!!) but I do think it is a battle worth having as it does have a massive impact on school for most teenagers.

MaureenMLove · 03/03/2011 22:44

DD is 15 and she goe up at 9! Admittedly, she doesn't always get into bed, but sometimes she does. It's as much for me and DH, as her.

Post 9pm is adult time.

lia66 · 03/03/2011 22:50

ds1 13 and half, is in bed at 9pm, no reading, tv, (hasn't got one) etc. Has one houir of xbox much earlier in the evening, and all mobile communications cease at 8pm, an hour before bed.

He has to get up at 6am for his paper round, (6.30am would be ok, but he likes to sit for a while) and he adoes need to sleep.

GnomeDePlume · 03/03/2011 22:53

DD1 (aged 15) goes to bed when she wants but tends to be by around 10.30 because she is up at 6am (maximising hair drying time).

DS (aged 12) goes to bed at 9.45 and gets up at 7.15

DD2 (aged 11) goes to bed at 9.30 and gets up at 6.45

I think that 9pm sounds very early

FabbyChic · 03/03/2011 22:55

Its far to early, they are a teenager. 10.30 bed is fair enough.

FabbyChic · 03/03/2011 22:56

Im 46 and I did not have to be home until 9pm when I was 13.

MittzyBittzyTeenyWeeny · 03/03/2011 22:56

Must confess even though I am on my own, having the house quiet for some adult time is a deciding factor on being quite firm but if he has stayed on MSN or texting friends he often gets hassled as to why he is going close down so early.

kiddie · 03/03/2011 22:56

The proof is in the waking up I think. Some can wake up easily after going to be later others can't. IME it is a good time for a 13 year old not all 13 year olds are the same.

squeakytoy · 03/03/2011 22:58

I just think there must be hardly any relaxing family time if a teen is being sent to bed that early. By the time they have had dinner, then done homework, they get sent to bed.... a bit unfair really.

aPixieMomma · 03/03/2011 22:58

At 13yrs old I was always banished to my room at 9.00pm but it was up to me when to decide to go to sleep.

I was mostly passed out by 9.30/10 though lol.
