To hate smokers

Siennablue · 16/02/2011 20:39

I have just spent ten days in hospital with my gorgeous dd2 as she slowly recovered from pneumonia. I met lots of great doctors and nurses they were amazing. But the majority of parents were scum. Children kept being admitted with asthma, tiny children struggling to breathe. One 18 month old was on her third admission. Almost every parent smoked, and so did every person who came to visit these poor kids. Then every few hours they have to leave the kids and go for a fag. They made the ward stink.
Wouldn't you think your baby gasping for air and screaming in terror would be enough to stop you smoking?
Bloody scum

you don't have to smoke in the same room as your child for the chemicals on your breath and your clothes to still be an irritant to asthma. see asthma uk website.

slightlymad72 · 16/02/2011 20:59

Is it bash as many people as you can on MN today?

Who cares, I'm gonna hang my head out of the kitchen window smoking ma fag, knock back the rest of the bottle of wine I've been working my way through, and if the old man over the road is looking out of his window, I might just give him a treat and show him some cleavage, if he's a really good boy he can have a flash of ma tramp stamp.

gordyslovesheep · 16/02/2011 20:59

do you think if we do [fag] enough they'll give us one - the gods on high? then we can post them all over threads like this to be really anti social and annoying Grin [fag]

muggglewump · 16/02/2011 20:59

YABU to hate all smokers. Not all smokers partake in their filthy habit in front of their kids, my DP doesn't.

However I hate walking past the gaggle of women standing outside the maternity wing 'avin' a faaag in their jammies whilst heavily PG or probably just had a baby. But then I'm biased as when I had DD a few years ago now I got into an arguement with the girl in the bed next to mine who nipped out for a "quick fag" without letting anyone know and came back to find her newborn baby covered in his own vomit. She had a go at me as apparently I should have been listening out for her child choking on his own puke while attempting to BF my own baby. Hmm cheeky fucking caaaah.

Siennablue · 16/02/2011 21:09

I suppose the reason I knew they smoked was because they said.... I'm just going for a smoke... didn't need to frisk them.
Yes I suppose I am unreasonable what does it matter they aren't my kids. Nothing nicer I imagine than going for a nice fag while your toddler is gasping for every breath and is almost blue from lack of oxygen.

Why do people think that not smoking in front of kids is ok? I thought the harm came when you breathed on them or were in contact with them after you had smoked. YANBU - I wanted to slap heavily pregnant mothers standing outside hospital after our DD died. I know it's an addiction but surely there comes a turning point when you should stop e.g. when pregnant. Plenty of patches/lozenges/inhalators/medicines etc. to get you through withdrawal.

saffy85 · 16/02/2011 21:13

It does reek of a certain irony I guess Sad

Having said that nicotine is incredibly hard to give up, even more so when under alot of stress. What's more stressful than your child being admitted to hospital?

germum · 16/02/2011 21:14

Smoking is an absolutely filthy, habit that causes so much damage to the smoker and people around them.

As for smoking "away" from your kids - you can smell it in every pore of their body and on their clothes so of course that's going to affect their kids.

Not to mention that anyone who smokes and has young kids is being totally selfish to indulge in a habit that will almost certainly shorten their life and lead to their kids experiencing the premature death or disability of a parent. ( especially if you are an older parent in the first place)

If you TRULY love your kids, why the hell wouldn't you kick the habit? It's no different from being an alcoholic or a dtug addict. There's plenty of help out there to stop if you want to - but the want has to be there first.

MadameCastafiore · 16/02/2011 21:15

I smoke occasionally or I think would scream at walls quite often - doesn't make me a bad person but making huge judgements about swathes of society makes you a bit of a prat IMO!

Siennablue · 16/02/2011 21:17

Actually you know what your right most of the smokers it is your choice if you smoke or not. It's my choice if I drink or eat too much. The difference being that if your child does have asthma it will make it worse, like if you get a giant dog it will make some kids asthma worse. They were such sweet children and it was just so horrible laying awake at night listening to them.

YANBU. Smokers do "cost" the NHS a few million which they love to publicise.

But they contribute BILLIONS in tax, a huge net profit. Absolutely essential for the building of things such as - hospitals!

Also, smokers die far earlier and from diseases which are untreatable and so not prolonged.

Therefore they also do not cost the state as much in terms of pensions compared to non-smokers.

My local hospital has had a huge building project going on for years. Lorries and other roadwork vehicles spewing out fumes all over the place but automated voices and signs everywhere telling you that the air outside is a "smoke-free" environment Hmm, it's a complete joke.

gordyslovesheep · 16/02/2011 21:18

no it reeks of [fag]s - allegedly

baskingseals · 16/02/2011 21:19

op yabu and very smug

TakeItOnTheChins · 16/02/2011 21:19

I don't think smokers are bad people. I just think it's a bit silly of them to think that they don't stink, and as someone has said, that as long as they aren't actively blowing smoke in their DC's faces that it's OK.

If smokers could smell themselves as others smell them, they'd probably quit within seconds.

Siennablue · 16/02/2011 21:20

I watched one toddler sleep her mum went to get a coffee her oxygen level was at 84%
She comes back and you can smell she has been smoking. Ok she was stressed and anxious but bloody hell you have to just hate what she is doing.
Rant over

OP posts:
cumfy · 16/02/2011 21:22

BTW if any YABU is NS or YANBU is S please say.

Siennablue · 16/02/2011 21:23

Ok ranting again
I'm not smug,
How is that smug. I'm not perfect I just can't see how it can be ok to smoke when your child is so so so ill.
Rant really over

Kerrianne · 16/02/2011 21:23

I think scum is a strong word.

I intensely dislike parents who make their children fat and they end up struggling to breathe as a result, not to mention teased at school but I still would never call them scum.

germum · 16/02/2011 21:23

I'm an ex smoking YANBU

stripeywoollencunt · 16/02/2011 21:24

see, this makes me want to take up smoking again, this does. and i don't smoke because i have a child - i don't see that as a good reason to be foully judgmental about a whole 'category' of people, just because some of them don't behave marvellously.

germum · 16/02/2011 21:25

BECAUSE IT IS BLOODY SELFISH THATS WHY!!!
