To hate smokers

I have just spent ten days in hospital with my gorgeous dd2 as she slowly recovered from pneumonia. I met lots of great doctors and nurses they were amazing. But the majority of parents were scum. Children kept being admitted with asthma, tiny children struggling to breathe. One 18 month old was on her third admission. Almost every parent smoked, and so did every person who came to visit these poor kids. Then every few hours they have to leave the kids and go for a fag. They made the ward stink.
Wouldn't you think your baby gasping for air and screaming in terror would be enough to stop you smoking?
Bloody scum

So are all the anti-smokers on here anti-alcohol too?

Alcohol has far more casualties and costs the NHS a hell of a lot more than smoking related illnesses.

A person under the influence of a cigarette is not a danger to others...

Rupeomatic · 16/02/2011 23:26

OP - really hope your dc gets better soon.

I'm afraid YABU - its your use of the word scum. My mum smokes, and did so all through my childhood. I didn't like it - but she certainly isn't scum.

my grandad died of it too, just trying to get the point across that you should'nt have to take your children through smoke, its totally different to going past cars etc.

Mists · 16/02/2011 23:27

You do have a point there Pixie. Smoking has no reason but transport does have a purpose.

Personally I have always walked or cycled. It's good for you and for the environment. Stops you from becoming unfit or overweight and clogging up your arteries and NHS waiting lists.

We all have our failings and imperfections. AIBU is probably not the best platform to admit this though Shock Shock Shock

OnEdge · 16/02/2011 23:30

But its the people around them who have to pick up the pieces.

BooyFuckingHoo · 16/02/2011 23:30

mentioning my grandad dying of lung cancer has nothing to do with getting your point across about walking through smoke. you thought you were being clever, trying to make me feel guilty for defending smokers using emotive phrases.

it backfired on you.

crazypanda · 16/02/2011 23:31

calm down, have you considered anger management,or perhaps an early night?.

BooyFuckingHoo · 16/02/2011 23:32

i'm not angry. you are the one throwing emotive language about the place.

OnEdge · 16/02/2011 23:35

squeakytoy can you back this statement up ?

Alcohol has far more casualties and costs the NHS a hell of a lot more than smoking related illnesses.

because having worked for the NHS, i would be very surprised if this was a fact.

did you actually just accuse me of having a mental illness? really? and you think I'm the one that shouldn't be here?

Mists · 16/02/2011 23:37

OnEdge that's life. I'm a cyclist. People might have to pick up my pieces one day considering the way most people drive.

And crazypanda honestly, that response wasn't necessary was it?

BooyFuckingHoo · 16/02/2011 23:38

interested now in knowing, based on what it is i have posted, what mental illness you have diagnosed me with? you are a MH professionl right?

Monty27 · 16/02/2011 23:39

crazypanda · 16/02/2011 23:39

anyway siennablue,i hope your dd is on the mend, that is the most important thing here, not what some peoples views are.

Salmotrutta · 16/02/2011 23:41

If every smoker quit tomorrow it would only make a tiny dint in the noxious chemical index that kids are exposed to now.
I'm not defending my smoking habit - I just think that our chemical-laden environment nowadays has more guilty culprits than smokers.
I actually have serious concerns about what we are being insidiously exposed to on a daily basis (at least we smokers are obvious) via industry.
One thing to consider - why has asthma increased so rapidly in the west? It clearly isn't about smoking because even if smoker numbers stayed constant (and they haven't, they've declined) there shouldn't have been a large increase in asthma sufferers because smoking rates would have stayed constant and so would numbers of asthmatics.

BooyFuckingHoo · 16/02/2011 23:42

so not responding to my questions now that you have been so publicly rude to me crazy?

Monty27 · 16/02/2011 23:42

OP's post was more about anti-smoking more than her dd's health. Hmm

I do hope OP's dd is ok obviously. I hope the other children in he ward are too, and their smoking relatives who were probably extremely stressed.

Mists · 16/02/2011 23:42

Alcohol may not cost the NHS as much but in terms of taxpayer money I can see that it might overall. Consider it not just from a health point of view but from an entire social one.

Alcohol-related crimes, from both victim and perpetrator standpoint. Court cases cost money. Police presence, investigation into such crimes, cost of housing a prisoner.

Social services where a parent is alcohol-dependent and (sometimes many) children have to be taken into care at enormous cost following extensive court procedures.

Not usually an issue if someone has the odd cigarette.

Monty27 · 16/02/2011 23:44

Boo I wouldn't even go there, because she's not worth it.

Swings perfumed hair.

BooyFuckingHoo · 16/02/2011 23:44
