To hate smokers

I have just spent ten days in hospital with my gorgeous dd2 as she slowly recovered from pneumonia. I met lots of great doctors and nurses they were amazing. But the majority of parents were scum. Children kept being admitted with asthma, tiny children struggling to breathe. One 18 month old was on her third admission. Almost every parent smoked, and so did every person who came to visit these poor kids. Then every few hours they have to leave the kids and go for a fag. They made the ward stink.
Wouldn't you think your baby gasping for air and screaming in terror would be enough to stop you smoking?
Bloody scum

OnEdge - funny, my mum and dad smoking did the opposite for me. Was never tempted to start and have always been very anti smoking as i consider smoking to have had a very negative effect on my life in a way. My siblings also don't smoke though dabbled lightly for a while. I said earlier, it was lucky my mum had stopped by the time my children came along or they probably would never have seen her. We couldn't have visited her and she wouldn't have set foot in my house if she wasn't allowed to smoke.

think you're being a bit harsh OP but i can see your point.

And to all the people who write "i dont smoke in front of my kids" - it doesnt matter!! you're still breathing out harmful products onto your dc for 2 hours after each fag! And you're dc smell of smoke!! its not right!

begon

Before my Dad had his pneumonia, i used to bang on about passive smoking and the kids, and he actually said it was all a load of bollocks !!

Now he has stopped, and the house is clean, we go round much more, but now having 3 under 4, I would have stopped going altogether. he didn't smoke in the same room as my DD3, but she used to come home stinking Sad My Dad hardly ever came to our house because I made him go outside for a fag. Luckily he has now stopped and it has been life changing for the whole family, especially my dear Mum.

When he came round from his coma, he didn't know what had happened to him. The nurse was not around, so he had to lie there frightened being intubated, unable to do anything. All he could see, was a stethoscope hanging on a wall, and next to him was the glass suction jar containing the crap that had been sucked off his lungs. It took this experience for him to stop smoking Shock

I sometimes wonder if the Nurses accidentally on purpose left that suction jar of infected phlegm there for him to see. I am so glad that they did.

Same here. I have memories of sitting in a car with all the windows closed (only two doors, so no windows in the back) and both parents smoking in the front. Yuck. My mum died a long slow death, struggling for every breath and my dad died from his second heart attack, so it's no wonder that my sister and I simply can't and won't tolerate smoking anywhere near us or our children.

This thread has turned into stereo typing,

Not everyone who smokes smells, it depends on how much you smoke.

it is like saying people who drink alcohol smell.

People seem to loose their common sense when the subject of smoking comes up.

begonyabampot · 20/02/2011 01:12

really, my friend only smokes a few - not heavy - she disappeared one night for a fag outside and appeared a little while later. The smell was overwhelming, she probably didn't think she smelled also.

CityGirls · 20/02/2011 02:57

With all the information published about the health implications of smoking I cannot understand why so many people ignore it and carry on. Having watched a close friend (smoker) die of lung cancer I can honestly say it's not worth it. Smokers are not bad people, they're just stupid.

I really admire those smokers trying to give up. It can't be easy but keep it up!!!

Bunbaker · 20/02/2011 09:17

COFFEE I'm afraid your sense of smell must be impaired in some way. I can always tell if someone has just had a cigarette. Non smokers generally hate the smell of smoke and can detect it very easily.
