To be shocked on the way the girls are dressed on My big fat Gypsie Wedding

I understand that the Gypsie/travelling community have very high morals, why the hell are the little girls dressed like mini lolitas Hmm. Flesh everywhere, and dressed in a sexual manner. Its fine for the adults if they want to dress like that and wear those big wedding dresses, but not kids. They are just little girls.

it seems distastfull to me to see such young girls dressed in that way but, it is the way girls dress in that community/culture.

it is a big like saying you are shocked to see a muslim wearing a Burkha

pigletmania · 25/01/2011 23:49

No not saying that allatsea, but the type of dress and the dancing is designed to attract men/boys is it not! Dont tell me allatsea if you went to a party and saw little girls dressed in that way and dacing like that you would not be shocked.

And the little girl being stray tanned for the first communion! I think that these first communiions are more about show, and less about religion imo.

I read somewhere that the communion is seen as a 'dress rehearsal' for the wedding, therefore big dresses/tans/make up etc.

allatsea1 · 25/01/2011 23:50

Why is it okay to judge the travelling community and not other cultures?

bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 23:50

It is not unique to that "culture" though. You see young girls sexualised like that in many walks of life.

You cannot compare it to a burkha. What is shocking about a burkha?

bubblewrapped · 25/01/2011 23:51

Allatsea, I would judge ANYONE who allowed their child to parade around like a porn star.

pigletmania · 25/01/2011 23:52

Because its on TV for all to see allatsea, so yes its open to critism. I am judging the dress of the little girls, not of the adults and all of the travelling community.

OP posts:
Munaka · 25/01/2011 23:54

Burkha? Are you kidding me?

Allatsea. I'm judging anyone who dresses their children like mini tranny hookers, complete with full make up and effectively sexing them up.

Travellers, Martians, whatever. I judge.

allatsea1 · 25/01/2011 23:54

I entirely agree Penelope. Yes of course I was shocked Piglet but then accepted the fact that people live differently than I do. Is that not what the whole point of the documentary is? To give anastonishing insight into the lives of others?

allatsea1 · 25/01/2011 23:55

I really can't believe this thread.

penelopestitsdropped · 25/01/2011 23:55

bubble - nothing. It is something we will not even notice as we have become accustomed to them. but i amsure that 30 years ago if someone had walked down the street in one there would have been a few Shock faces.

And no, whilst provocative clothing is not unique to the travelling community it is quite well know that that is how the women generally dress.

so to say you are shocked by seeing something that it is widely known is a bit of a non sentance really. like the burkha comment

pigletmania · 25/01/2011 23:56

Your right allatsea just because i accept it does not mean i agree with it.

OP posts:
Munaka · 25/01/2011 23:57

What? You can't believe children should dress like children?

Do you have daughters? Would you let them wear that crap and dance like that?

Munaka · 25/01/2011 23:58

+++you can't believe children shouldn't dress like children?+++

allatsea1 · 25/01/2011 23:59

I don't think they would care if we agree or not...

pigletmania · 25/01/2011 23:59

Why all atsea, you think that its ok for litle girls to dress like tarts.

OP posts:
Ladyofthehousespeaking · 26/01/2011 00:00

To be fair - most little girls would dance like that if they watched beyonce/girls aloud/Saturdays videos

allatsea1 · 26/01/2011 00:01

I'm not a traveller though munaka. It's not part of my culture! It is part of their's.

walkinZombie · 26/01/2011 00:02

I'm with you there piglet,
as soon as those girls came one the screem my OH goes' bloody hell, street corners waiting' then we realised how old they were and was :O

tbh the non- gypsy brides mother was a hooker waiting to happen

penelopestitsdropped · 26/01/2011 00:04

the vast majority of MN consider ear piercing mutilation. In Indian cultures it is common practice.

Most of us would not circumcise out child unless medically necessary, there are quite a few cultures where this is the norm.

We are a country of dog lovers, there are many communities that have canines as a delicassy.

Just because WE don't do it doesn't mean that we should be telling others how to live.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 26/01/2011 00:04

How was non gypseys mum a hooker in waiting?
She had just over done it on the tan, probably just wante to make a bit of effort :(
nasty nasty people on this thread

cantspel · 26/01/2011 00:06

I thought it was all rather tacky BUT i dont see any real harm in it. To us it looked like they were dancing in a sexual way but to them they were just copying what they had seen on mtv. The outfits are nothing more than dressing up clothes and not worn on a day to day basis. When she went for her spay tan was the little girl dressed in hot pants and crop top. No she had a perfectly nomal t shirt dress on.

penelopestitsdropped · 26/01/2011 00:09

"hooker waiting to happen"

dear lord what vile ignorance.

Considering most prostitutes have history of abuse, drug and/or alcohol addiction, severe debt, mental health issues, some bastard man pushing her into it at some level What was it about the poor woman made you think she fit the profile of someone who was likely to end up in prostitution?

or are you using the same method of profiling as the people that think the gut with the thick rimmed glasses and long coat must be a paedophile?

Munaka · 26/01/2011 00:09

And it's still a bit wrong. A lot wrong in fact.

Small girls who should be running about in leggings/jeans and jumpers/tops wearing that stuff is wrong.

They are sexualising girls from an early age.
To make them think their only commodity is their bodies is wrong. To make them think that their only worth is the ability to be "grabbed" (don't get me started) all harks back to training them young to show off their "assets"

So they start them young. Allowing them to dress in a provocative manner. Who cares if travellers don't sleep around? There's a very short engagement period.

Munaka · 26/01/2011 00:12

Penelope. Skewed logic. How is highlighting a pre pubescent girl's body to the parts she will develop the same as eating dogs?
