My DH and DS (15months) were visiting the church where my father is vicar yesterday and as it was his 60th birthday there was fizz and cake after the service for all the congregation. My dad was having a great time and loved showing off his only grandchild to his flock (it was so lovely actually) but as he was talking to a couple of ladies from the church one of them had been coo-ing over DS and all of a sudden shoved a huge chunk of cake into his mouth!

I was at a distance looking on and wasnt able to get there in time to ask her what the hell she was doing but to say I was shocked was an understatement! I actually shrieked!

I have a few issues with this and tell me if IABU but surely having food shoved in your mouth when you're not expecting it (and even if you are) is a basic human rights violation! Also, what if he had an allergy she wasnt aware of. I let him have a bit of cake every now and again so thats not an issue but she even ask my dad if he was allowed any, she just shoved it in!

I'm sure DS didnt really mind although he was a bit taken aback! (He's BLW'd too so never really has anyone put food in his mouth for him!)

Maybe I've blown it out of all proportion but I was so shocked! She was an older lady if that's relevant? Is this just what they do!?

AIBU?

Not cake? The horror!! It'll be heroin next mark my words.

'I was at a distance looking on and wasnt able to get there in time to ask her what the hell she was doing but to say I was shocked was an understatement! I actually shrieked!'

I am lol'ing in RL. Really.

I do hope it was home made cake at least Wink

AbsofCroissant · 17/01/2011 15:48

Was this a CoE event? Because that would totally explain it - it was the CoE version of the Spanish Inquisition - cake or death. Have you not seen Eddie Izzard? What you missed just before was the old lady asking your DS "cake or death?" and he wisely chose cake.

You should be pleased about that.

Lamorna · 17/01/2011 15:51

Worse will happen. She shouldn't have done it, but I don't think that you can go as far as violation of human rights! It was just one of those things and best forgotten.

QuickLookBusy · 17/01/2011 15:52

I expect the old dear was the church virgin verger, and didn't understand about children or cake.

cakewench · 17/01/2011 15:59

polonium, indeed. It could have been yellow cake!

okay, sorry about that. :o

I'm not going to tell you you were BU because I know the same feeling. I'm always... surprised when people offer biscuits or sweets to my son without checking with me first, but luckily it doesn't happen often. (and no, it doesn't honestly upset me when he scores a biscuit off someone. But he's almost 2 now with no known allergies so what the heck.)

Boobalina · 17/01/2011 15:59

Because you were across the room she probably said 'Cakey cakey' to which your BLW 15 Month was so excited they opened their mouth soooo wide - at which point you notice the said cake insertion

FFS grip a fucking grip - terrible things are happening every day to poor kids out there in RL and you are shrieking because some old bird was kind enough to show interest in your spawn and offer them a little treat for being so cutesome?

Man up will you?

Boobalina - 'Man up'???? Hmm

Katzia85 · 17/01/2011 16:04

My sister, has a 17month old who has never had chocolate or sweets - his treats are the organic rice cakes etc, which he loves and doesnt know any better.
Therefore I can understand why you reacted in this way, as noone should presume that a baby/toddler is allowed any sort of food unless checking with the mother first, more so for allergies, but also to find out if the child has even ever had cake etc.
My sister would have flipped out.

I understand why some mnetters may think you over reacted as its only cake, but I can see where you are coming from and think that people should not give anything to children (especially strangers) without permission from the guardian of that child.
xx

Smuddy, I promise you will look back on this, cringe and laugh Wink

goodasgold · 17/01/2011 16:07

cakewench @ yellow cake. Very good.

Any old ladies recently taken a delivery of uranium?

I always get mine from Ocado.

Will be tidying up with a smile on my face. And if my little children don't sit quietly for an hour or so they are going to have some cake.

Boobalina · 17/01/2011 16:07

JosieRosie - sorry, fav expression,

OP needs to have a reality check that she actually needed someone to say she was BU - its such a prissy twee middle england emma bridgewater cath kidson organic spotty wipeclean table cloth boden white company buggaboo yoghurt weaving response that makes me want to poke her in the forehead.... HARD and tell her to get a fuckin grip woman.

Blu · 17/01/2011 16:12

"I also hate the way old women insist on touching babies' faces and hands. They even do it to tiny newborns. I'm not precious about cleanliness or OCD or germs or anything but it has always made me cringe when it's happened to my DCs."

WHY would you cringe? They are kindly old ladies taking an interest, being kind and showing affection - not child-snatching zombies.

Unless I am missing something.

Now we need an Old Lady plan alongside our Zombie Plans, don't we?

A mother's work is never done.

twirlymum · 17/01/2011 16:14

Where is this church? Hope it's near me, I might pop along on Sunday if there's free cake going.

Katzia the poor child!

You see, if Jehovah's Witnesses had cake, they'd be invited into a lot more people's houses.

poissonrouge · 17/01/2011 16:14

Brilliant. I thought I was beyond cheering up today but this thread is GOLD.
