I was accused of being a racist on here because I referred to an Indian takeaway as an 'Indian'

Same as I would for Mexican, Chinese or Italian.

It can get bloody silly, and quite often it's white British people implying racism where there isn't any, TRUE racism is bloody awful and should be taken seriously.

But mugging is a crime where young black males are disproportionately represented.

The same way, as maypole1 said, white men over 30 are disproportionately represented in cases of child abuse.

There are many reasons that young black men are reported as 'mugging' more than young white men. It isn't 'cos they is black and therefore dirty foreigners so what do you expect' etc.

Stating this fact, in a non biased, non judgemental way, isn't racist. But I think there is a hint of 'I said it, it's fact so you can't call me racist' in the OP. Do you have any understanding of the complex social, political and cultural issues behind this OP?

You know I was talking to myself at this one earlier, muttering.

My issue with this website story is that it's a non-story on the actual issue of JS saying about Some Asian Men have been routinely targeting vulnerable women.

This is true, SOME men of Asian descent HAVE been targeting young, very young 12yo-18yo) vulnerable girls and passing them around among groups of SOME other men of Asian descent. 2 of them have just been convicted, and this is not the first time.

The speaker from the Ramadhan organisation himself said in the BBC coverage I saw yesterday, that there ARE some men who think that these young women are less valuable than their own sisters and female relatives and there must be steps taken in the community to get the message out that this is not acceptable.

MY issue, if the quote is correct, is that it looks to be reported that JS said that young WHITE women were being targeted.

The victims of these sex crimes are both black AND white. It is simply not right to say that young white women are the only victims here, they are not.

SGM, didn't one of the reports say too that there are an overwhelmingly large WHITE prison population convicted of sex crimes.

I do think there is some stupidity about race - I was at a meeting where someone criticised the race-spread of workers in a company I worked in (because it wasn't 50-50 white to non-white) and I said 'well we recruit from a very white area' and then got jumped on by the whole room for being racist. One said 'what you mean the west midlands is largely white?' I said 'yes, the region is largely white' and got a massive tut then I said 'but we dont' recruit from teh west midlands, we recruit from x area and y area that are overwhelmingly white so we shouldn't expect 50-50 if anything we should expect 95-10%. More shocked faces, then I said 'and we recruit people typically with a PhD and that too is a disproportionately white qualifications (in that the proportion of this country with phds are most typically white, middle-class) I then got jumped on for apparently saying that black people can't get PhDs. It was a nightmare.

When I went and checked the figures, the white british (ie NOT including white- other) proportion in the recruiting area was 98% and overall white population was over 99%, but I was still branded a racist for months despite my saying that we should, in any case, find out what the proportion in the company really was before we just guessed on what we thought we saw about.

There is a cultural statement in some pakastani men that it is OK to date and have sex with a white girl, but that pakistani girls are much more off limits unless its to marry - I would guess its more outdated amongst british-born pakistani-origin men than men who have come from pakistan, and also that there will be plenty of pakistani men who think that view is abhorrent and unrepresentative.

No to mention the posh guys at uni who call non-society girls 'bed fillers' before they find a 'proper girl' to marry...

I am not in the least afraid of being called a racist, because I know I'm not one.

I don't know much about this case tbh, and so I have no idea what was going on. However, I heard a chap from Barnardo's on the radio earlier saying that both black and white girls had been targeted, and he was in no doubt that vulnerable Asian girls would have been targeted too, had the opportunity arisen. If that's true, then Jack Straw has obviously spoken out of his arse, but I really don't know.

I do worry about sometimes saying something that can be potrayed as raciam even though i am the least racist person.
People are quick to jump on the band wagon of you are being racist.If someone is stating a fact then why call them racist.
And as for being called racist for calling a take away 'Indian' then i think it is ridiculous.You should not have to watch every single thing you say for fear of upsetting someone.
I not sure on all the satistics about white men attacking young girls or young black guys being thiefs.To be honest to even put it as a statistic makes me confused
Isnt that racist in itself then! It takes all sorts of people to commit crimes why put people into categories!
I just think that if it is obviouse and purpose racism it should be taken very serious.And that should mean any racism, any colour being racist to another!
