Not really scared of it.I say things when joking with friends which could be construed as racist if they were overheard by a 3rd party without context, and if they think that what I am saying is racist then we'd just have to agree to disagree.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/01/2011 14:03

Pakistani isn't a race.

cumbria81 · 10/01/2011 15:20

I was brought up in a very left-wing, lentil weaving, Guardian-reader household and always used to consider myself very open minded and not at all rascist.

When I was 20 I moved to France. I received a non stop torrent of abuse in the street from North African men (mainly Moroccan and Algerian), sexual harrassment, being followed in cars, cat-calling etc.

It got to the point where I would see a North African male and immediately cross the road or tense up in anticipation of the onslaught.

That, of course, is rascism.

I am not sure what point I am trying to make here, I guess that we are all rascist or at least hold prejudicial views based on our experiences whether we like it or not.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/01/2011 15:24

cumbria81 - That's not racism that's racial profiling - which may or may not be racist depending on the context, evidence and implementation.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 10/01/2011 15:35

After spending 8/9 of the last summers in China, I certainly make generalisations about the Chinese that live in Southern China. Some positive, some negative, but my experiences shape my expectations.

EdgarAleNPie · 10/01/2011 15:46

those would be cultural generalisations.

giveitago · 10/01/2011 15:50

Generally not,

but was rather taken aback a few years back when crossing a london bridge and everyone was staring (rude) at a young couple. Their attitude was that you're looking at us because we're mixed innit (white and asian) but it wasn't that at all (sorry white and asian mix is as old as the hills - I know - I'm one) but it was because he was physically very beautiful and she looked like she had ringworm and people were looking at the missmatch in attractiveness not ethnicity. Yes, we were all rude but they were very arrogant in seeing it as racist. It was more of the case if you can be with him why can't I be with depp/ robert downey etc.

I think the more scared you are the more likely you're gonna say something that someone, somewhere will pick up on.

We live in a world where people are just too afraid to open their mouths as they don't trust what will come out won't offend someone.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 10/01/2011 15:51

Yes, that's why I said the Chinese living in Southern China and not all Chinese! Grin

EdgarAleNPie · 10/01/2011 15:56

This might be a story about a sexually more repressive culture-within-a-culture.
in Malaysia, here there are Chinese, Muslims, Christians as well as people still living a tribal existence - the rape rate is highest amongst the muslims. Perhaps this is because they aren't allowed to have sex with girlfriends, or the females within their circle of friends. Pehaps this is because a woman caught having sex outside mariage will be forced to claim it as non-consensual, and the actual incidence of the crime is the same. Possibly the view of women is less positive in that portion of the population - and that is why more rape occurs - a good explanation as the Chinese and Christian portions are hardly permissive. But the reported rate is higher, any which way.

It may be also be as simple as 'you get a few bad apples in every bunch' lots of Pakastanis in thast area. Some will be criminals. the typical victim of that crime in that area being white/ black rather than their better guarded Asian sisters.

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 17:53

This threads got a bit boring!!!

And I don't care what anyone says, we're all of us racists, everyone, black, white, purple, everyone feels safer with their own, we're all tribal deep down, that doesn't mean we don't mate or pair up with other races but we feel safer with our own kind (except the whitey demon attractor, ofcourseHmm who ain't no shrinking violet herself, by the language out of its mouth) anyway I digress don't let minority folks tell ya that they aren't racist because they are, 'me heard it meself, innit' woo!! you better believe it!! Ye haa bud!!

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 18:09

And another thing, I went to emergency A&E a few weeks back, jesus christ, it was like a third world shit hole. And I know, I know, you're not supposed to say this but the smell----Must I be permanently surrounded by the great unwashed.

Rubyx · 10/01/2011 18:26
  1. I'm asian and i always say going for an indian or a chinese!
  2. The issue about a group of asian men "grooming girls" and attempting to convert them is true. They also target other asain communities, i personally know many people who have been approached or know someone. They also do stuff like give them date rape drug and blackmail them with photos taken of them in compromising positions. There have been suicides.
  3. I personally think it is a bit of human nature to think that you are better than others. Education and true compassion for mankind makes you rise above this animal instinct.
TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/01/2011 18:31

It may be natural to be tribal , but that doesn't make you not a cunt for behaving tribally.

We're not living semi-nomadic lives on the plain anymore (well most of us aren't) so we need to grow up.

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 18:38

World must be awash with cunts then!!!

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/01/2011 18:51

Well, yes, I would have thought that was self evident. Even Sid Viscous spotted it.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 10/01/2011 18:51

Vicious even.

usedtobeyoung · 10/01/2011 18:57

Dobiegirl, are you sure your as racist as you sound, or do you just need attention?

RedShoesFan · 10/01/2011 18:57

"In much the same way, I have sometimes made remarks that others may view as sexist/racist/homophobic or distressing to people with a disability and had it pointed out to me. Sometimes I feel that criticism is unwarranted and I ignore it, and sometimes I realise it would benefit others and myself if I changed that attitude or way of speaking."

MillyR, I feel much the same way and if I ever did unwittingly say something offensive or hurtful I'd rather be pulled up on it than not, even if it did sting a bit.

BoffinMum · 10/01/2011 18:58

To me this is on a level with the story about muggings in London at one time, when young black men were over-represented in the group of convicted muggers. It is a particular kind of inter-racial sex crime on a par with that for singling out of particular groups, and IMO needs keeping an eye on. Doing so does not negate the fact that other crimes happen, or indeed assume that all Asian men are potential rapists. Similarly if there was a gang of white men deliberately targeting, say, Turkish girls because they were more easily manipulated than English ones, then that would important to comment on as well. People need to get past the 'mention race and you're a racist' think.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 10/01/2011 18:59

Ah Dobiegirl is Wales a little dull today?

MargaretGraceBondfield · 10/01/2011 19:01

BM....I cannot see that this new story will now make everyone think all Asian men are rapists, or that white/black/chinese men don't rape. It is not remotely the same as the racism shown in the way we treated and suspected Black men, these are different times.

Is it just me that's noticed an absence of Muslim posters, aside from those that have admitted to some factors that may contribute to the way these men view and use women.

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 19:22

Margaret, blimey love, it's not about rape, it's about Pakistani Heritage Gangs GROOMING white girls cos them's easy and of 'low morals'!!!

And they've been doing it for years, grooming little girls and passing em' round 'cos their just gori guttis innit'

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 19:23

Dobiegirl, you will find this hard to believe but I actually agree with you Shock but yes, this thread has become boring and I can't be bothered debating with ignorant people such as yourself.

dobiegirl · 10/01/2011 19:29

so don't!! Grin
