to think speeding fines are a joke?

I just got a letter saying I was speeding-which is fair, I know I was, and I know where the bastarding mobile camera van caught me. However I was doing 4 miles over the speed limit and they have kindly offered me 6 points an £80 fine and a court hearing for prosecution. It used to be 3 points, £60 and a court hearing if you disputed it. I'm so annoyed, do the police have nothing better to do?

Jesus, times must've changed. That sounds very harsh.

JakeBrake · 07/01/2011 19:07

Lol at nothing better to do. If 4miles over isn't overvthen what IS? 5 miles?

honeybehappy · 07/01/2011 19:07

YABU if you dont want the fine then dont speed :)

unfitmother · 07/01/2011 19:07

WTF, when did that change?

JakeBrake · 07/01/2011 19:08

Six points v irregular. What was limit

JakeBrake · 07/01/2011 19:09

That's odd. I got my first ever one just before Christmas...the letter came on 30th or something. 3 points and a £60 fine. 38 coming into a 30mph zone.

detachandtrustyourself · 07/01/2011 19:11

Haven't you seen the adverts about how a few miles an hour makes a big difference in survival rates in anyone getting run over? It is against the law because it is dangerous to drive over the speed limit. YABU.

FlamingoBingo · 07/01/2011 19:12

God I really hate all the po-faced holier-than-thou twattishness on MN whenever anyone mentions minor speeding infringements. Very irritating indeed.

Get off your high-horses and worry about the twats who drive at 60 in 30mph zones, not the people who take their eyes off their speedo for a second too long. I'm sure you'd rather they were watching the road in a busy, built-up area than having their eyes glued to the dashboard to m ake sure they don't sneak over 30 by mistake.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 19:13

I was doing 34 in a 30 zone, no schools/zebra crossing/pedestrians on the 29th December. IN my defence I was in an alien area picking up a friend 3 hours away.

I don't deny that I was speeding and could kill someone blah blah, I just think that my particular penalty was ridiculous.

I agree. Everyone speeds/ has done. But there does need to be a limit somewhere. Not " well it's 39 but you can do 40"

What was limit ?

cookielove · 07/01/2011 19:14

Bah, stupid money making scheme

Honeybehappy - i got caught in an area that the high way code described as national speed limit, i came round a corner there it was, and i double checked on the way back if there were any signs, there wasn't but i took the points and the fine, because i didn't wanna get screwed over in court. Its not always so black and white

The ten per cent thing us an urban myth

JakeBrake · 07/01/2011 19:15

Inmeant it's 30 butbyou can do 40

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 19:18

Yeah there was no school, there wasn't even any residential properties...I'm usually quite vigilant as I normally have my 10 mo ds in the car. I drive slow around school road markings in case a lollipop lady pops out and startles me.

But the letter says 6 points, the fine and a pending court date.

Have you been on a speed awareness course? I was led to believe that you are caught speeding a second time, you could be given 6 points instead of 3.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 19:19

and yes it was one of those little vans that park up in the hedges...I saw it and I rang my friend and asked as it was on the other side of the road if it could've "got" me. She said it depended on which way it was facing...and I don't recall, I just remember seeing it and slamming my brakes on, apparently a tad too late.
