to think speeding fines are a joke?

I just got a letter saying I was speeding-which is fair, I know I was, and I know where the bastarding mobile camera van caught me. However I was doing 4 miles over the speed limit and they have kindly offered me 6 points an £80 fine and a court hearing for prosecution. It used to be 3 points, £60 and a court hearing if you disputed it. I'm so annoyed, do the police have nothing better to do?

you were breaking the law - can't see the problem with being delt with firmly

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 19:56

Yes I was breaking the law.

But so is refusing a hiker a glass of water should they come to your door. That doesn't mean that the penalty isn't ridiculous.

Ladyofthemanor - Sorry your getting such a hard time, i would def appeal.

Kalokai must not have read my post, where i clearly stated where i got caught there were no signs i was driving the same speed of the traffic around me, as i was in an unknown area, so sometimes you just get caught out

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/01/2011 19:57

But if you hadn't broken the law in the first place the penalty would be irrelevant. You broke the law, suck it up.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 19:57

Yes Cookie, I don't recall seeing the signs so I can't comment or even use that in my defence! Still some people are just so pedantic;

"Well you were breaking the law". As if after this I'm not aware.

I'm not sure, isn't like 5 years?

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/01/2011 20:00

Four years I think. See here

PocketMouse · 07/01/2011 20:00

How long have you had your license LadyOfTheManor ?

5Foot5 · 07/01/2011 20:00

I think it is 3 years

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:01

Hmmm 7 years now

theevildead2 · 07/01/2011 20:02

YABU you must know that. You were 4 miles over what was the maximum limit that you could drive safely.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/01/2011 20:02

That sounds wrong, my dh was caught allegedly doing 54 in a 30 (I say allegedly as neither of us to this day remember speeding past a 30 sign in roadworks at ALL)

Anyway he got 5 points and a summons

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:03

I know I was over the bloody limit. My argument is not about why I'm being penalised, it's about HOW (and how harshly) I am being penalised!

Oh please... Hmm...just for the avoidance of doubt here 1) the fixed penalty notice you have been sent will endorse you with three points and a fine if you return it now. 2) If you get bolshy and go for the court date instead, by all means try arguing your case but we have the power to endorse you between 3-6 points for that speed, hence the warning in the letter. Asking for the photo is pointless nowadays: a) because they are very very good, b) because your numberplate is on camera and if you fail to name the driver when asked to do so you will get 6 points. Falsly naming another driver will result in disqualification and a criminal conviction. Not worth it. finally 3) the road conditions have nothing to do with the fixed penalty: that sort of point could only be debated in court. As someone else said, suck it up. If you go to court and are convicted on the basis of the camera evidence you will get the points plus a fine based on your income, the court costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.

huddspur · 07/01/2011 20:03

It does seem a little harsh

PocketMouse · 07/01/2011 20:03

I was just pondering if it had been an overly harsh one because you were a new driver :)

5foot5 You do realise your DH will have to declare the three points on his licence and his insurance company and his premiums will go up and by a lot more than the £15 difference between the fine and the speed awareness course???

southeastastra · 07/01/2011 20:04

i dont know anyone who has got 6 points for a minor offence like this. maybe it looked like you were on the phone?

BodleianBabe · 07/01/2011 20:05

Oops. should have previewed:

'by his insurance company and his premiums will go up by'

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/01/2011 20:05

It doesn't seem like a lot, hardly a death sentence Grin
