to think speeding fines are a joke?

I just got a letter saying I was speeding-which is fair, I know I was, and I know where the bastarding mobile camera van caught me. However I was doing 4 miles over the speed limit and they have kindly offered me 6 points an £80 fine and a court hearing for prosecution. It used to be 3 points, £60 and a court hearing if you disputed it. I'm so annoyed, do the police have nothing better to do?

The linky I gave seems to be the welsh site for camera type stuff

fruitstick · 07/01/2011 20:39

If they offer you a speed awareness course then take it. It certainly made me think twice about my speed. I was caught doing 36.

Apparently the reason urban speed limits are 30 is that serious injury and fatality increases really very sharply above that. So 34 is still dangerous.

I'm not being smug though. It is easily done and you just have to be vigilant in future. I think those sat nab things are wrong though. Almost condones speeding as if it's just the getting caught that matters.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:42

Yep it is the Welsh one. It's a bit strange. I'll get to the bottom of it tomorrow. I shall not go down without a fight!!

Yeah well, I figured today I can change my display to my speed...as I'm small I have to lower the steering wheel, which means my speedometre is partially blocked..hence I use my SatNav, but I've changed the settings now.

I assumed you got points or the chance to attend a "speeding education" course in lieu?

orienteerer · 07/01/2011 20:50

...get, not got Blush.

BCBG · 07/01/2011 21:02

LOTM - as I thought, it is an NIP, Notice of Intended prosecution (the penalty for failing to notify the driver is 6 points)...once you reply notifying them of the driver's identity a different form will be sent to you offering you a FPN of 3 points and a fine. Just send it back quick.

Incidentally, the speed awareness course is NOT yet available in all police areas, sadly, so it is possible Gwent don't yet have it. If they do, however, you may be sent a letter offering you the course with the FPN. It costs money but it is useful and obviously has no effect on your insurance history.

Is it normal to get speeding fines from the DVLA mines is from the actual police?

Lindax · 07/01/2011 21:08

Also never it never asked for payment details. A cheque was sent in made payable to the Sheriff Court.

borderslass · 07/01/2011 21:11

Scottish system is different Lindax.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 07/01/2011 21:20

Kinda off topic, but - I think your sat nav doesn't detect cameras, it just knows where they are, where you are, and what the limit is (being a sat nav and all), but it won't know about mobile camera placements.

Not entirely sure, but I think radar detectors are illegal in the UK.

Denning · 07/01/2011 21:44

You admitted on here that you were driving, so fill in the S172 notice saying you drove, and sign the form. Then if the camera safety partnership agrees to what you have stated on the S172 form, your fine could be the alternative of the admitted speeding offence which may well attract 3 points and a FPN fine. If you do not fill in the form and return it, then if found guilty of not completing the S172 form, you could receive 6 penalty points, a band C fine up to a Level 3 tariff. And of course all fines paid in court attract a Victim Surcharge of £15 as previously pointed out.

And don't speed again because if you collect 12 points, then under the totting up provisions, you could receive a 6 months disqualification.

AnotherMumOnHere · 07/01/2011 21:58

"I slammed on my brakes after I passed it, apparently as the van was on the other side of the road, it clocks as you come at it. It's weird because my Sat Nav normally alerts me if there are cameras around and I'm doing higher than the limit and it didn't beep."

WTF ARE YOU ON SOMETHING !! It seems it wasnt a case of 'if' it was ever going to happen but more a case of 'when' it was going to happen. How many times previously have you not been 'caught' because your sat nav 'warned' you and you cut down in time.

How would you feel if it had been your child that was crossing the road as you were speeding by !!??

llbeanj · 07/01/2011 21:59

there is no such thing as a 6 point fixed penalty for speeding - it is 3 points or you are summonsed to court. and then you won't get more than 3 points for a 34.

pepipoo.com can give better advice.

LadyOfTheManor · 08/01/2011 20:46

Yeah the speed detectors are called snoopers, my brother has one. Hmm they're legal to be in the car but are not allowed to be switched on Hmm.

I didn't get offered to go to a crash course. I;ll just be more vigilant on cameras/speed in future.

I didn't get the opportunity to send a cheque, it's left the spaces for a debit/credit card number and or/send a cheque.

Weird.

I rang the DVLA who confirmed it however, they said it would be 3 points and it could be a printing error. I asked them to check my history and it's clean, so I'm not too sure about that. Maybe it's the cuts to the Welsh Assembly...that's what fees are for, to pay those lazy idiots.

Thanks for all your advice ladies and gents :o
