to think speeding fines are a joke?

I just got a letter saying I was speeding-which is fair, I know I was, and I know where the bastarding mobile camera van caught me. However I was doing 4 miles over the speed limit and they have kindly offered me 6 points an £80 fine and a court hearing for prosecution. It used to be 3 points, £60 and a court hearing if you disputed it. I'm so annoyed, do the police have nothing better to do?

altinkum- what does it matter if it makes me think twice about speeding again? Isn't that the point of the fine, to deter?

I'm self righteous about speeding penalties and I've been driving for 13 years without getting fined.... Because I don't speed. Easy as that.

Suck it up and don't do it again.

So Yabu.

It is just an NIP at this stage...don't worry.

It is warning you of further points if you do not comply with with supplying the info.

AnneTwacky · 07/01/2011 20:29

It's just asking for the driver info. You should fill it in and they'll probably send you a conditional offer of a fixed penalty(3 points and fine)

Have a good look through the notice and any other info sent with it, which should tell you more.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:29

No that was a typo...sorry !

On the form bit, it asks for the licence details, payment info, name the driver etc, but above that it says to accept the six points and pay the fine without a court hearing then sign the end bit.

So I'm a bit Hmm this bit, according to what you've all been saying doesn't read right.

I know how you feel though, I got caught and I totally deserved it but I did feel like it was personal haha totally gutted with myself, thankfully it'll not count come December (after 3 years)

southeastastra · 07/01/2011 20:29

i read it like that too scurry - i got a letter few days after detailing points and fine etc iirc

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:29

but it says a court hearing for 7 days? That can't be right...unless this is someone's idea of "fun"?

southeastastra · 07/01/2011 20:30

oh sorry just read other post - it's really odd

scurryfunge · 07/01/2011 20:30

Query the number of points -it should be 3.

southeastastra · 07/01/2011 20:31

did if give you an offence number and instructions on how to look at the photo, you can do it online now

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:31

Well if it is real, Anne, I don;t want to accept 6 points. Maybe I should just ring the DVLA. Does anyone know of a link that I can check it out online?

OP posts:
LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:31

There isn't an offence number. There's a reference number?

DiscoDaisy, in the letter i received from the police, it had a section about speed limits in different zones and what to look out for that indicates a certain speed if no signs are visible. Well the bit i was caught in was basically a country road, with no street lamps, and it said to take it as national, which was 60, well 2m past the speed van there was a national sign, but the unsigned bit i was in 40, there were signs on the other side of the road Hmm but hey ho, such is life

borderslass · 07/01/2011 20:32

no it just tells you they will let you know the court date, be warned if you go to court the fines can be more.

Ladymuck · 07/01/2011 20:32

No mention of 6 points then?

I suspect that they have just issued the NIP in order for you to identify the driver. Is the car registered to you?

This is a NIP, not a summons. So the next step, once you return the details is a fixed charge penalty notice or a summons.

LadyOfTheManor · 07/01/2011 20:34

So I have to fill in the form and pay the fine before they confirm the points? Which means that hopefully the random 6 point bit is a mistake?

I'm fucked either way. Still points and money. Fucking accelerator.

Within 14 clear days of a camera recording an alleged offence, a notice of intended prosecution will be issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle. This notice will contain the date, time and location of the alleged offence.

Included with the notice is a driver information form. The registered keeper of the vehicle has a legal responsibility to return this form giving the identity of the driver at the time of the alleged offence. Unless the alleged speed is more than 26mph above the limit, the Safety Camera Partnership will normally make a conditional offer of fixed penalty. This means recipients can choose to accept the penalty or to have the case heard before a court. Cases involving speeds of more than 26mph above the limit must be dealt with before a court - a conditional offer of fixed penalty cannot be made.
