I find them a bit like a secret I've not been let in on

Find the music tres dull

I get the cultural significance etc but fucking hell, it's been 40-odd years...

There is a large body of work.

Naturally it varies in quality.

But I genuinely do not believe there have been any worthwhile innovations in pop music since Rubber Soul and Revolver...

Maybe it's about time there were.

It's like watching a Powell and Pressburger film. From this distance you can see cliche.

But it's easy to forget; these people invented the cliche...

notnowbernard · 20/11/2010 21:56

SHHH....

Can you hear the soft sound of weeping?

It's all those mourning DaftPunk's poor opinion of them

Crikey. Two bottles of Sol and I'm getting pretentious already.

It's the lime slices. I swear.

BlueHerring · 20/11/2010 21:57

Great fun. Ok, to begin with, most of the posters with dubious taste at least admit "there was a fuss about them". Quite right there was. This is because no other act in the history of popular music has influenced so much of the world's population to such an extent. That is "why" the fuss. Next point is more subjective admittedly, should you like them? Well, no, not if you don't find the music as fantasically and amazingly brill as I do, but while I suspect there are many who DON'T claim to like The Beatles because they SHOULD, I also suspect that this is really the reason they are against giving them a chance in the first place. Listen to the music properly first, then tell me.

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 21:58

alright then

give me three without a doubt fantastic songs and I will relisten to them on youtube

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 21:59

but please not obla di oblada, help or let it be

SalFresco · 20/11/2010 21:59

A lot of the people I've met who claimed to hate the Beatles were so pleased with themselves about it - not saying this is the case with people on this thread Grin but it is the sort of thing people say to be "contraversial" - when it is, of course, personal taste. And that's really the thing, not liking the Beatles music - opinion - is different to claiming they were not massively influential - which is of course a fact.

retiredgoth2 · 20/11/2010 22:01

ZZZ I accept the challenge.

  1. I'm Only Sleeping
  1. Doctor Robert
  1. For No One
nameymcnamechange · 20/11/2010 22:02

Can you put your finger on why you don't like them?

Do you like any music from the 60s?

Or from before the era when you were a teenager and became interested in music?

SuePurblybiltByElves · 20/11/2010 22:02
  1. for no one
  2. in my life
  3. if I fell

Go to it and god speed Grin

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 22:03

Im My Life
Girl
Because
A Day In The Life
If I Fell
Here, There and Everywhere
Tomorrow Never Knows
Happiness is a Warm Gun

I can't possibly pick 3! Pick 3 at random out of those.

notnowbernard · 20/11/2010 22:05

I can't really put my finger on it, as I said it's like a secret I'm not privvy to or something

I DO get the cultural significance of them and the enormity of their influence

But overall I find most of it dull

I like the Stones. I like bits of Bob Dylan and early Van Morrison (TB Sheets eg)

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 22:06

another three... eek ,ok

southeastastra · 20/11/2010 22:06

it's probably very easy to judge the beatles in the year 2010

quite funny for use that were born in, or before the 60s though

BlueHerring · 20/11/2010 22:06

3 fantastic songs...
For No One, Girl, While My Guitar Gently Weeps
(Paul, John and George as main performers/writers respectively)

southeastastra · 20/11/2010 22:06

use? us

retiredgoth2 · 20/11/2010 22:06

In My Life would have been my next choice...

SalFresco · 20/11/2010 22:07

Now Bob Dylan is dull Grin

retiredgoth2 · 20/11/2010 22:10

I like Bob Dylan too.

But oddly I don't like any Dylan song as much as I like 'You've Got To Hide Your Love Away' which is, essentially, Lennon doing a Dylan 'Stars in their eyes'....

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 22:10

bit scared (of daftpunk) to admit this but I kind of find it all a bit wishy washy so far. Sorry that must sound offensive but for me it would need to have a stronger rhythm , something more gutsy to it. Do you know what I mean? As far as popular music of that time is concerned, yeah I do like a lot but I definitely prefer the stones. Just my personal taste...

so far, and thanks for the tips here. I am now looking at the next three

Animation · 20/11/2010 22:11

Some songs are VERY good - but at the same time they are creeping you out.

ZZZenAgain · 20/11/2010 22:11

that's just me, anyone else being converted here

electra · 20/11/2010 22:12

YANBU - I'm glad to have found at least one person in the world who feels the same way I do!
