Whilst shopping yesterday in a well known DIY store with DD 8, we walked along the paint aisle and suddenly dd started to cry/whimper and held onto her shoulder. Sticking out of the framework was a metal shelf painted black with a clear plastic tub (where the brochures are held for paint).

This being empty and also clear DD did not see it and walked straight into it hurting her shoulder, I spoke to a member of staff who told me to speak to Customer Services on the way out whih I did and she said they would remove it. I didnt get them to put it in the accident book (totally forgot) but did take a photo.

I also sent a standard email via the Contact us page on their website.

Am I being unreasonable to think they could of called to see how DD was? It could of seriously hurt her and any other child.

Sorry to rant but more than annoyd.

I suppose they'll assume they'll hear from you if anything serious and you want to sue them etc.

Loshad · 10/08/2010 21:21

i think you are over-reacting a bit, your daughter banged her shoulder and you think the staff should ring the following day Shock
of course if you really want to join thew compensation culture then off you go

sunny71 · 10/08/2010 21:23

How bad it is? A little girl hurts herself and they cannot even respond to my messgae.

If I complained the product was fault Id get a reply.

Typical practice I'd say for a big store - if they ring/write etc, then they are accepting liability which could in fact give you the go ahead to sue etc. yanbu it;s just a product of the blame society that we live in today. You can still go and get this entered into their accident book, whilst your there ask to see the manager to make sure the object has now been removed.

proudfoot · 10/08/2010 21:24

YABU to expect a phone call from them. It wouldn't even cross my mind to expect a call Hmm and yes maybe she could have been injured but she wasn't really - so presumably she was fine yesterday and there's no need for them to follow up again today!! If they have removed it then it's probably sorted as far as they're concerned.

MrsBadger · 10/08/2010 21:24

yabu

sorry

if (eg) a shelf had fallen on her or a member of staff had run a trolley over her foot, or it had been a serious injury, you might be less unreasonable, but really yabu and you know it

TrillianAstra · 10/08/2010 21:24

Did you really expect them to call you?

Ragwort · 10/08/2010 21:25

Not sure how walking into a plastic holder could have 'seriously hurt' your daughter - can you explain a bit more??

It's the sort of thing I would tell my child off for not looking where he is walking rather than immediately assume 'someone is to blame'.

SloanyPony · 10/08/2010 21:26

They take up to 72 hours to reply to emails, usually. I wouldn't assume just yet that they are not going to. They might be in the process of getting the "okay" from a manager to send you a voucher or something.

I do feel you are being a little precious about it too. Sorry. These little hazards exist everywhere. Unless it was broken and not functioning as it should, with razor sharp broken edge or something.

These things happen, there is not always someone to "blame". If there is, sorry but more often than not it is the parent unless something is in very bad repair.

Mingg · 10/08/2010 21:26

YABU

MrsBadger · 10/08/2010 21:26

um, a little girl hurt herself because she walked into something in the store

a little girl didn;t hurt herself because a B&Q employee stabbed her with a garden fork

if you'd been on a walk in the woods and dd had bumped into (eg) a well-camouflaged branch, would you be equally cross?

hocuspontas · 10/08/2010 21:27

It was yesterday. Please don't let it get to you. Your dd is fine.

sunny71 · 10/08/2010 21:28

This was a metal shelf like used to hold a a shelf you have on a wall, so It wasnt just plastic and yes she did hurt herself the skin was broken.

Im guessing most people are not that bothered when their child gets hurt, but I am.

OP posts:
LynetteScavo · 10/08/2010 21:28

They won't call for a general chat to see how she is. They will have procedures to follow. The issue here for them is if the metal shelf has been removed, and whether you intend to take further action against them. (I guess you might seeing as you have taken a photo)

It's not like she hurt herself at the corner shop, and the little old lady who owns it is wondering how she is.

Do you intend to go back and make sure the shelf has been removed?

usualsuspect · 10/08/2010 21:28

May be she should have looked where she was going YABU

What MrsBadger said.

YABU.

LetThereBeRock · 10/08/2010 21:30

YABU.

If the shelf was painted black and only the tub was clear and it was the shelf she walked into why did you say she didn't see it?

LucyLouLou · 10/08/2010 21:31

YABU, it was only a day ago, your DD was not seriously hurt, and I'm sure they will get back to you within a few days. I wouldn't have expected a phonecall though. Did she receive an injury? Because I've walked into one of those things myself and I can only assume she had bumped herself? Serious question btw, not trying to trivialise.

sunny71 · 10/08/2010 21:32

How can she she something that was not visible, even the member of staff couldnt see it.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 10/08/2010 21:32

actually I am bothered when my child gets hurt

but I don't expect anyone else to be, tbh. She's my responsibility. And she's only 2 so she gets hurt a lot. I have yet to contact the council regarding their abrasive pavements, their swings that, well, swing and the fact that the trees in the park have roots. I also do not blame my neighbour for having such a fascinating cat that dd would rather look at it than at where she's going and regularly walks into a hedge.

LetThereBeRock · 10/08/2010 21:32

Er yes, people do care when their child gets hurt but they know that accidents do happen and that there's no need to make a big deal over it unless the store was clearly negligent and the injury was serious.

scurryfunge · 10/08/2010 21:32

Sorry, totally over reacting and jumping on the potential compensation bandwagon.Tell your DD be more careful.

LucyLouLou · 10/08/2010 21:32

Oh right, x-post, I still think YABU, if they don't respond to your email in a few days time, then you would have the right to be annoyed. I think for the moment you're a bit OTT though.

sunny71 · 10/08/2010 21:36

I only asked for advice and have a rant and as usual the claws come out.

My dd genuinely got hurt through no fault of her own.
