Whilst shopping yesterday in a well known DIY store with DD 8, we walked along the paint aisle and suddenly dd started to cry/whimper and held onto her shoulder. Sticking out of the framework was a metal shelf painted black with a clear plastic tub (where the brochures are held for paint).

This being empty and also clear DD did not see it and walked straight into it hurting her shoulder, I spoke to a member of staff who told me to speak to Customer Services on the way out whih I did and she said they would remove it. I didnt get them to put it in the accident book (totally forgot) but did take a photo.

I also sent a standard email via the Contact us page on their website.

Am I being unreasonable to think they could of called to see how DD was? It could of seriously hurt her and any other child.

Sorry to rant but more than annoyd.

YAB increasingly U since the original post. Carry on though, it's quite funny.

pinkyp · 10/08/2010 23:00

i did see ur point op til you got nasty with your comments and said people dont care about their children.I think u did the right thing reporting it / sending a email. Why did u not write it in the accident book? This covers you then and will back up your complaint when emailing customer services. I wouldnt expect a phone call, maybe a email or letter back.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 10/08/2010 23:00

Wait, do they KNOW your phone number? Did you give it to them

"Here is my phone number, I will expect a call within 12 hours" Hmm

If not, er HOW do they phone you?

Unless they are Psychic of course...

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 10/08/2010 23:01

Sunny - have you actually said whether your dd needed emergency treatment or a doctor's visit, or whether she has any serious loss of use of the arm following the injury?

I used to be a nurse, and I am finding it hard to imagine that someone could do themselves a serious injury to their shoulder by just walking into a shelf - I suspect she has a bruise and some soreness, and maybe a scratch - if it were one of my dses I'd have put an ice pack on it (pack of frozen peas is excellent), given them a cuddle, and then distracted them.

I wouldn't be expecting a call from the store to check up on such a minor injury. If your dd had had to be taken to A&E in an ambulance, then I would expect follow-up, but not for a scratch and a bump.

FWIW when I was pregnant with ds1, I slipped on a squashed grape in Tescos, giving myself a nasty bump, and the duty manager said the grape would be cleaned up at once, and gave me a rattle for the baby - but I didn't even dream of expecting a phone call to follow up on the accident.

And the comment you made:
"Im guessing most people are not that bothered when their child gets hurt, but I am." - that was seriously unpleasant, and does not leave me with a very good impression of you - it's certainly far and away the nastiest thing that anyone has said on this thread - you should be ashamed of yourself.

cinpin · 10/08/2010 23:04

come on she didnt break anything. it was an accident,

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 10/08/2010 23:07

DD(3) did something similar at Mothercare - they had an empty, clear, catalogue holder (yes, COMPLETELY clear perspex, people!) at toddler height. She ran into it and got a nasty scrape that just missed her eye.

I can reliably inform you that no-one gave a toss (obviously I did..) Also, they didn't have a first aid kit apparently. They did kindly bring me a wet paper towel from the toilets to mop the blood off a howling DD's face though. Which was nice.

I did manage to get them to put it in the accident book, but the shelf is still there. I didn't sue either Wink but no apology or owt, I wouldn't hold your breath.

cupcakes, one point of the accident book (ex-lab worker) is that sometimes near-misses or minor injuries can be part of a pattern that ends up with a serious injury. Possibly not in the case of the plummeting light bulb though...

AuntieBulgaria · 10/08/2010 23:09

could have

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 10/08/2010 23:11

Thankyou AuntieB - that was grating on me too.

cupcakesandbunting · 10/08/2010 23:14

Can totally see the point in an accident book in a lab, Heathen. Not so much in an office where the most perilous thing is a hole punch. Or errant lightbulbs, apparently.

LetThereBeRock · 10/08/2010 23:15

The most dangerous thing in an office is a filing cabinet/system. I know from experience.Grin

cupcakesandbunting · 10/08/2010 23:15

Also, we definitely need a risk assessment at national level wrt PERSPEX. They could do one of those safety in the workplace videos called "The Hazards of Perspex".

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 10/08/2010 23:19

I think you need to get a bit of perspextive, cupcakesandbunting. Grin

LucyLouLou · 10/08/2010 23:21

True story, my brother's best friend lost part of his ear to a low flying piece of perspex. Be on the lookout, you never know when one might come for you....Hmm

cupcakesandbunting · 10/08/2010 23:21

Guffaw Grin

bruxeur · 10/08/2010 23:22

I think the risks of Perspex are pretty clear to all of us.

bruxeur · 10/08/2010 23:22

Meh. Trying too hard now. Bedtime!

LucyLouLou · 10/08/2010 23:22

LMAO @ bruxeur

LetThereBeRock · 10/08/2010 23:24

You've stolen all the good jokes!

MilkNoSugarPlease · 10/08/2010 23:25

:o

savoycabbage · 10/08/2010 23:32

A kitchen cabinet shelf fell on my dd in IKEA and she cried and they insisted on getting a first aider and filling in the accident book. All the hoo haa just made my dd more precious about it all and I wouldn't give IKEA my phone number as I didn't want them phoning me up.

Please note, my dd was inside the kitchen cupboard at the time. Blush

MilkNoSugarPlease · 10/08/2010 23:34

I'm very sorry Savoy....But that's made me laugh :o Blush

xstitch · 10/08/2010 23:36

The only cruel/vile comment I have read on this thread is this one: "I'm guessing most people are not that bothered when their child gets hurt, but I am". I for one find this very offensive.

Back to your original point. I would have been very surprised if they had called tbh. Nothing you have said has suggested to me that your daughter has been seriously hurt although I may be wrong. Customer services within the store did say they would remove the offending article so no other child should be hurt

LucyLouLou · 10/08/2010 23:37

Savoy, be honest now, did you shut her in there and casually walk away? Hmm

savoycabbage · 10/08/2010 23:39

Well, the creche was very busy. I did ram a broom handle through the handles so she should have been perfectly safe.
