Whilst shopping yesterday in a well known DIY store with DD 8, we walked along the paint aisle and suddenly dd started to cry/whimper and held onto her shoulder. Sticking out of the framework was a metal shelf painted black with a clear plastic tub (where the brochures are held for paint).

This being empty and also clear DD did not see it and walked straight into it hurting her shoulder, I spoke to a member of staff who told me to speak to Customer Services on the way out whih I did and she said they would remove it. I didnt get them to put it in the accident book (totally forgot) but did take a photo.

I also sent a standard email via the Contact us page on their website.

Am I being unreasonable to think they could of called to see how DD was? It could of seriously hurt her and any other child.

Sorry to rant but more than annoyd.

You can jut tie them closed with string for the first few years. It's just when they get their strength up you have to use broom handles.

I haven't laughed like this in ages.

I'm a terrible mother before I've even given birth.

Lynli · 11/08/2010 00:01

YANBU, someone was negligent and your DD got hurt. It is IMO perfectly normal for a mother to be upset when her child is hurt.

I think you just wanted someone to apologise and not just brush you off.

I think it would make sense for the staff to show a level of concern, you are less likely to take it further if you felt they were genuinely concerned.

I had a bad fall down some stairs due to grease on the floor in a restaurant. The staff were so nice helping me up, getting me a drink, ensuring I was ok. I just put it down to one of those things. I know I would have felt differently if they made it apparent that they really didn't give a damn that they hurt me.

LetThereBeRock · 11/08/2010 00:04

Well they did agree to remove the shelf so it seems they did take it seriously.

And again a bad fall is very different to a minor scratch/bruise caused by bumping one's shoulder into a shelf.

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 00:11

Sunny can i ask is it a deep gauge? is her arm hanging off maybe?

And I wonder if this bracket was attached to a shelf what was she doing so close to it and also why she was so distracted she didn't see it?

Other than that I have to agree with the others YABU accidents happen, I suppose there are always the option of reins or walking with her infront of you crocodile chain style so nothing jumps out and attacks her again!!

nasty things those invisible clear tubs on a black bracket with a painted rim!

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 00:13

Sorry I am lost why should a store apologise for a child who did not see something??? Surely she should have been looking where she was going!

CwtchyBlueMama · 11/08/2010 08:38

If i were to complain & sue everytime my ds had fallen over/scratched himself i would be living in my own castle with a moat & everything.

Goblinchild · 11/08/2010 08:48

Lurching off to one side, are any of you feeling a little more sympathetic towards teachers?
Don't you worry Sunny71, my Risk Assessment for any trip would definitely have included perspex containers, shelving, squashed grapes and the possibilitry of psychotic trolley attack.
Knowing your daughter's inability to walk down an aisle without protection, I would have had her in my group and flung myself as a protective barrier between her and harm.
Does that make me better than you at safeguarding?
Why weren't you aware of the danger and ready to protect your baby before harm came to her?

Goblinchild · 11/08/2010 08:49

And I checked. That was 8 years and not 8 months wasn't it?

Megatron · 11/08/2010 08:58

Why to folks post on AIBU when what they are really saying is 'I am right, and expect everyone to agree with me instantly and whatsmore I'm not actually interested in your opinions anyway?' Confused

TrillianAstra · 11/08/2010 09:01

I think it's for the challenge - if you post on Chat and people agree with you, well, that's nice, but if you post on AIBU and get told YANBU it's time to get the champagne out.

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 09:02

Goblin you just made me spit coffee on my laptop!! Now i will have to sue you!!!

coraltoes · 11/08/2010 09:03

The problem here is you're trying to apportion blame for something that was simply an accident. It was not your DDs fault, and I'm sorry she was hurt. Neither was it the fault of whoever took out the last brochure/paint card rendering the shelf "invisible", neither is it the fault of the person who put the shelf there, with brochures for customers to use. Sometimes these things happen. I really do not see the point in getting so wound up about it- your child is your lookout, nobody elses.

OutOutLetItAllOut · 11/08/2010 09:05

should you not be more annoyed with the inconsiderate fool who removed the last leaflet therefore leaving the plastic with the option of becoming invisible??

frasersmummy · 11/08/2010 09:08

cupcakes .. shouldnt the comment in the accident book have been p.coombes felt a little light head ...BOOM BOOM

goodmorning · 11/08/2010 09:15

i would like to pre-order one of cwtchybluemamas bubblewrap/feather jackets please Smile
clearly a huge market that has not yet been taken advantage of.
My guess if you did go on Dragons Den is that Theo could provide the bubble wrap at a very good price.

Morloth · 11/08/2010 09:24

I love these ones.

OP: AIBU?
Board: YES!
OP: No I'm not and you are all meaaaaan.
Board: LOL

DS1 walks into shit all the time, it is because he isn't paying attention, we have yet to encounter scenery jumping into his way deliberately to injure him.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 11/08/2010 09:27

That's a masterly summary, Morloth!!

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 09:27

Morloth well don't go in a "well known DIY store" or it will happen!!

LittleMissHissyFit · 11/08/2010 09:30

Christ Morloth, you keep doing that, cutting the pages of rants down to 4 lines, you'll break AIBU!

littleshinyone · 11/08/2010 09:33

this thread has really made my morning!!

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 09:36

Is nobody going to take this seriously?

The shock of those nasty invisible tubs jumping out and attacking you can take a long time to get over!!!

OrmRenewed · 11/08/2010 09:40

Well IMO you are not being unreasonable at all. I think they should consider closing the store until a full H&S audit is completed, offer the full costs of corrective surgery, fire the Customer Leaflet Operative and get the store manager public flogged. Then and only then will justice be served.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 11/08/2010 09:41

Outstanding Summery Morloth! :o

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to sue a well know Shampoo who (wait for it) LET SHAMPOO GET INTO MY EYES THIS MORNING

Now tell ME I'm not BU to sue?! :o

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 09:43

MNSP get on to them straight away!!! sue sue sue!
