Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

Count me in. I did it last year and found being part of a thread really supportive. I planned afterwards to only drink in moderation but have struggled with that. I am drinking waaaayyyy too much.

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 08:24

I'd like to join please. :)

Drinking way too much also. Using it a crutch and stress reliever. Have put on 3 stone in 3 years.

SantaMonicaPier · 29/12/2020 08:25

I'm considering it. I was gifted a huge amount of alcohol for Christmas through which will make it more challenging!

AgnesNaismith · 29/12/2020 08:27

Me! I don’t remember the last day I didn’t drink a glass of wine...more recently too. I need a good reset for my mental and physical health.

geillisduncan · 29/12/2020 08:33

I'll come too if that's okay. Managed 9 weeks last year then back on it and have drink every night since.

Superstardjs · 29/12/2020 08:41

I am. I have only got a bottle of champagne in, which will be drunk on NYE and no more will be purchased. If I don't have it, I don't need it, but if it is in the house, it gets drunk. So no buying it and nowhere to go to drink it (and noone to drink with) should make this the easiest year yet.

Breastfeedingworries · 29/12/2020 08:43

I want to give this a whirl, two years ago I tried and failed in jan but then I fell pregnant so was booze free for 10 months Grin

My dd is two now and I want to have a break from booze to lose weight.

ADMum20 · 29/12/2020 11:25

🙋🏻‍♀️ 🙋🏻‍♀️ 🙋🏻‍♀️

I’m in... I also need a reset.

I’d like to go alcohol free for more than just January, but first things first...

Nice to ‘meet’ you all!

ADMum20 · 29/12/2020 11:26

First things first as in, let’s achieve Dry Jan initially! I suspect I might find it challenging.

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 11:56

me too. i am thinking about starting NYE to have a good run into it and not start 2021 hungover

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 29/12/2020 12:53

Hi everyone, thanks for joining me.
My fiancé and I are starting NYD - but we've kind of given ourselves one day off (23rd January) as it's our anniversary. I think we're both far too reliant on alcohol and need to prove we don't need it if that makes sense?

I don't think we need any formal rules here, just be kind and supportive - and no judgement if anyone falls off the wagon ( it'll probably be me first anyway!). Let's take this one day at a time and see how we get on! There's a Dry January app if anyone's interested - I think it works out how many dry days you've had and how much money/calories you've saved. Might be worth a look.

Anyway. I'll introduce myself properly. I'm Helen, 46, part time medical secretary. Live with my fiancé and 3 kids (2 are mine, 1 is his). Tried sobriety earlier this year but then lockdown happened and it went to shit. Tried cutting down many times but it's crept up again. Am starting to worry about my dependence on alcohol and also how it's affecting my health. Anyone interested in a before/after comparison. Happy to post weight loss figures and/or photo to see if knocking the alcohol improves things. I also suffer MH problems which are both helped and exacerbated by drinking.

Hey @MyGhastIsFlabbered, just wanted to say good luck! I’m several months in and feel great😍😍😍 So much calmer, happier, fitter and healthier! 20lb lighter too, I look better than before I had my kids😱 I would think twice about making an exception for your anniversary. I know it seems hard and joyless thinking of it now but I’ve had many great nights out and in (birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas included) and I didn’t in the slightest feel like I was missing out. And I was drinking a lot before. You just get used to it☺️

FoxandFeathers · 29/12/2020 13:06

I am going to do this for the first time. I know it will be a challenge, I don’t think I have had an alcohol free day in the last year. I have been preparing lots of hobby style activities to do in the evenings next month, have a pile of books, face masks etc. I am hoping to lose my 2 stone wine belly this year.

geillisduncan · 29/12/2020 13:15

Lovely to have so many on board already. Thank you for starting the thread OP. As I said earlier I managed nine weeks this time last year and then one day just started drinking again. No clear reason just bored. I've been drunk every night since. I use it as a crutch to sleep. The idea of going to be sober gives me the fear. No idea why.

DefNotDeadYet · 29/12/2020 13:26

I'm in if that's ok - I've never done it before but have meant to! Have drunk far too much over Christmas, I had cut down hugely since lockdown as I was aware it was building up, but the festive season has given me too many excuses to go over the top.

I might have one day off on my birthday mid-Jan.... but if I'm doing well might just keep going!

efc1878 · 29/12/2020 13:35

I’m joining in. I did Dry Jan and Dry November this year. I did 61 days on the run and felt amazing.
Now feel shit after a week of drinking when I don’t even enjoy it anymore.
My motivation is always how well I feel without alcohol.

BigMamaFratelli · 29/12/2020 13:46

Count me inGrin

I do dry january most years, but really feel like it's needed this yearBlush

Hopefully it will help me shift some lockdown pounds too..

disconnecteddrifter · 29/12/2020 13:50

I would also like to join. Committed with a friend to do this yesterday but I was mega hungover now my brain is thinking of ways to get out of it. Currently feeling that I'll never manage but I definitely wont if I dont try

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 29/12/2020 14:37

@geillisduncan I'm the same - the idea of being teetotal fills me with absolute horror

TanglinOrchards · 29/12/2020 14:41

I am just about to finish a glass of wine with lunch. Then that is it for me.

I always need a good run at things. :)

One of the best things about Dry Jan is I tend to save a shedload of money. This time I am planning on putting the money aside (about a fiver a day if i am being realistic) and using that for a treat just for me.

DowntonCrabby · 29/12/2020 14:42

Yep!

I did August and October AF this year and felt great, plan on doing a good few months off in 2021.

Usually we have my DH work ball and my DSis birthday celebrations in January which makes it difficult but there will be zero events this coming Jan. I’m hoping to stay off the booze until our anniversary mid Feb.

YorkshireLawyer · 29/12/2020 15:18

I’m in. I’m drinking far too much - most days in a greater or lesser amount and it’s making me fat, irritable and causing problems at home. I use it as a stress and boredom reliever, and I’m starting to worry about the impact on my health. Like others have said the thought of giving up forever is just too overwhelming so I’m going to give Dry January a go first and hopefully then carry it on or at least seriously cut down - we’ll see, I need to do the 31 days first! Off to download the app...

Hohofortherobbers · 29/12/2020 17:20

Yes, I'm in, I was in the sober Oct and no booze Nov threads, managed 87 days till last week and eager to get back on the wagon.

MsCristina · 30/12/2020 01:07

Me too please! Have done it before with varying degrees of success and my rational brain knows it makes sense.

Many Xmas wine gifts combined with an avalanche of bad news both personal and general Covid misery has resulted in a lot of over indulgence in December.

I have been promising myself that Dry Jan will get me back on track so am v pleased to be able to join in.

My main aim is to a) improve my general mood as I know that drinking makes me feel depressed and grumpy & b) improve my face as am fed up of looking knackered, blotchy and haggard on Zoom calls

MsCristina · 30/12/2020 01:08

Looking forward to getting to know you allSmile
