This was no accident.
The timing was too succinct chiming with the world leaders convening and Russia leaving earlier today.

Russia is testing the boundaries. Russia is testing Nato.

This is very very serious.

Exactly my thinking.

This was not a 'woops, my bad moment'.

He tested us with Crimea. We did nothing. He built up forces at NATO borders. We did nothing. He invaded Ukraine. We scored an own-goal by sanctioning ourselves in effect.

This is not a test.

Livelovebehappy · 15/11/2022 20:14

It was wayward missiles according to news reports. Whilst that doesn’t excuse what’s happened, NATO need to keep their heads over this and not make snap decisions by dragging us into a war which no-one will win. As it wasn’t a deliberate act against Poland, nato shouldn’t be braying for retaliation.

FlimFlam2 · 15/11/2022 20:14

Not to sound all conspiratorial. But if NATO want escalation, they will conclude it's a Russian rocket. If they don't want escalation, they will find it was friendly fire, or debris from Ukraine shooting down a Russian rocket.

I don't think NATO are keen for out and out war. I think they will do nothing besides strengthen defences. I hope!

Wars have started over a pig before. Your faith is misplaced in this species

In 1859. Slightly scraping the barrel there.

If it was Russia and a pp says it may have been a stray Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile gone astray then you can bet Putin is having an oh fuck moment and screaming down the phone at some hapless commander. He is losing the war at the moment and the last thing he wants to do is stir up NATO's hornet nest.

The Russian apology when it comes if needs be will framed around a regrettable mistake in taking action against the "Ukrainian aggressor" along with a heavy dose of whataboutism and they will steer well clear of targets bordering NATO states moving forward.

I totally agree. People need to calm down NOW and think a bit more clearly.

NATO will have to discuss this. And Poland can always go it alone if they feel this is a useful casus belli.

Yes, wars can start over any small issue as history has shown, but nuclear apocalypse wasn't a potential consequence back then.

Sparklfairy · 15/11/2022 20:15

According to sky Russia are denying everything and calling it "provocation" by the Polish.

vera99 · 15/11/2022 20:16

Images appear to show fragments of an S300 missile, which Russia has been using as a not particularly accurate surface-to-surface missile (due to a shortage of better stuff) and is also used by both countries for air defence. So doesn’t allow any immediate conclusion.

Back in World War II my grandfather was a munitions expert who could calculate to the millimetre where to fire artillery in order to avoid the schools the Germans setup factories for the war effort Next Door to. There’s absolutely no way the Russian army have accidentally dropped a bollock. They are not the imbeciles often portrayed in the media.

You're right that "dumb" artillery shells should indeed be very predictable.

OTOH a missile or drone is more complex, something along the lines of a small automated aircraft. Hundreds if not thousands of moving parts, in this case possibly built and certainly maintained by Russia's finest.. Every now and then one of them will go wrong.....and it has to be said the same applies for most guided weapons used by most of the worlds armed forces...

So yes, a bollock having been accidently dropped is a real possibility.

Lol, Poland will absolutely not act outside of NATO. There's nothing to gain and a lot to lose by doing that.

Were you expecting a thread about puppies?

We don't know if it was an accident. We don't know if this is an escalation. We don't know how Poland will react.

I'm scared.

Tell me why Russia would target a small farm in Poland?

Or are we going down the rabbit hole and start saying it was a secret military base?

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 20:17

You don't accidently sent a missile into Poland. Particularly when you're Russia.

Too far from any AD batteries to account for that. More likely a UAF one that shot down a Kalibr cruise missile.

Stray missiles happen, they've happened for the USA before in Afghanistan.

Cooler heads will prevail in this and its unlikely article 5 or the war drums for Nato will start beating over this.

Whats the range of S-300s???

(Hint: its not that far).

I take it you’ve not been following this war lately. Russia’s ability to prosecute war is… not professional.

The CEP accuracy of some of their strikes are not even on the order of what NATO could do in the ‘80s. Literally throw something at a city and hope it hits something useful.

Do you know the first thing about conflict? That you haven't seen on Dads army?

MollieMarie · 15/11/2022 20:19

Poland is quite a distance away from Kyiv, so were they aiming for Lviv?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/11/2022 20:20

And Poland can always go it alone if they feel this is a useful casus belli

We're not in the 18th/19th century where countries tore up treaties and stormed into neighbouring countries unilaterally. Anyway, why should Poland WANT a cause for starting a war? they've a long and unhappy history of wars stretching back centuries.

Will you pack it in please? The Russians have shown time and time again that their kit and crew leave a lot to be desired.
