OMG, I feel sick.

DS1 is in the army and I don’t cope with the potential of him maybe having to go to war, despite being married to a serviceman for 28yrs. I’m on my own tonight, too, so don’t even have DH here to talk some sense into me.

I really feel for you especially knowing you are on your own

About what? The title is very clear.

Justthisonce12 · 15/11/2022 20:04

Back in World War II my grandfather was a munitions expert who could calculate to the millimetre where to fire artillery in order to avoid the schools the Germans setup factories for the war effort Next Door to. There’s absolutely no way the Russian army have accidentally dropped a bollock. They are not the imbeciles often portrayed in the media.

CustardySergeant · 15/11/2022 20:04

FreakyFrie · 15/11/2022 19:47

yes obviously.

Which will wipe most of us out with the bombs they have now.

Kiss your ass goodbye if a WW3 starts.

Yes, that's what I thought, so I'm confused at the posts seeming to be pleased that NATO will now act.

vera99 · 15/11/2022 20:04

Article 4
Article 4 is generally considered the starting point for major NATO operations and therefore is intended for either emergencies or situations of urgency. It officially calls for consultation over military matters when "the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."[18] Upon its invocation, the issue is discussed in the NAC, and can formally lead into a joint decision or action (logistic, military, or otherwise) on behalf of the Alliance.[19] It has been officially invoked seven times since the alliance's creation.[20]

The Russian missile screw-up that ended up killing two Poles will result in NATO invoking article 4 not article 5 (see below). The consultation will probably result in more support for Ukraine, particularly air and anti-air power. Will give Poland some real influence.

'Kiss your ass goodbye if a WW3 starts'

Might as well turn the thermostat up then.

Haha! (Droll laugh)
I was just thinking the same..
WW3 would surely be the last thing anyone wants.

I don’t think we will get nuked, but neither do I want British ( or other nationals) Servicemen dragged in to a war that isn’t theirs.

ChristmasSpaniels · 15/11/2022 20:03

I don’t think it is a bad question @LibbyL92 or that you are being ridiculous to wonder!

We are due to travel to Krakow in 10 days. One of my young DC suffers from quite severe anxiety and previously questioned me about it being safe because of Russia. I am now hoping she doesn’t see the news! And wondering what will happen next

I guess we just need to keep a close eye on the news.

can’t help but wonder!

I don't think the ones in Ukraine are exactly the crack troops now.

Why? The subject of the thread is in the title.

Nottodaty · 15/11/2022 20:06

So then how many stray missiles do we accept as accidents? (Gas pipe breaking by accident) (other odd incidents with underground sea cables)

I hope there isn’t an over reaction to this first accident. But we on shaky ground now and it’s worrying.

Were you expecting a thread about puppies?

We don't know if it was an accident. We don't know if this is an escalation. We don't know how Poland will react.

I'm scared.

The artillery is both expensive and destructive you’re not gonna have an 18-year-old conscript firing it.

Venetiaparties · 15/11/2022 20:09

Isthisabitweird · 15/11/2022 20:03

People saying we are in the end game now. Can you please clarify what this means?

I have a child who I have to literally peel off the ceiling with anxiety so would be good to know how to answer with some sensible answers when she gets wind of this. Which she will because I’ve barely got her out the house for 10 months.

I hope your child is okay. Maybe keep the news off, and play a board game and don't mention it or if you do play it down. It is nothing to worry about and just an accident.

The end game in a war is - the last stage.

So for example:

www.nytimes.com/2022/09/20/opinion/ukraine-putin.html

With deranged dictators the moment they realise they really can't win, it is the most dangerous as they are likely to act irrationally.

vera99 · 15/11/2022 20:09

NATO will exhibit a cool and rational response of that I am certain and therefore I'm not worried. There are times when you need to be worried this is not one.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/11/2022 20:06

The Russian Conscripts are probably not willing participants in this war.
Stray missiles probably aren’t that rare.

Justthisonce12 · 15/11/2022 20:09

Rather depends on if they have anyone else to do apart from 18 year old conscripts.

You might if that's all there is...and their aim isn't spot on either.

Wars have started over a pig before. Your faith is misplaced in this species.

NATO will have to discuss this. And Poland can always go it alone if they feel this is a useful casus belli.
