No confirmation from the Pentagon:
"We are aware of the press reports alleging that two Russian missiles have struck a location inside Poland near the Ukraine border. I can tell you that we don't have any information at this time to corroborate those reports and are looking into this further," Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said.

Will you pack it in please? The Russians have shown time and time again that their kit and crew leave a lot to be desired.

I agree. Russia is already on the back foot. Nobody is going to be nudged into throwing petrol on a small fire.

Venetiaparties · 15/11/2022 20:23

The issue is: if Nato do nothing and sweep the 'accident' under the rug - Russia reads thats as Nato unable/reluctant to get involved. Hence the probable use of chemical or targeted nuclear weapons against Ukraine which would be much more 'doable' with confidence if they feel Nato are squeamish about involvement.

Nato moves in and stands by the article of declaration. WW3 is on the cards, and Russia can signal it was just a stray but by then it might be too late. Russia are completely ruined economically, militarily, they have run out of road and roubles. Putin can not bear to lose. Remember the caged bear analogy.

Nato fudges with Article 4 and hopes to god Russia stops there (It won't, surely we know that now)

At this moment the back channels of communication could not be more important, but in my view it is almost too late. This is more serious than anything we have seen in the world in several decades, and I am pretty sure most world leaders are not buying that it was just two stray missiles.....

I think the west has to do something at this point. We can't keep looking away. Putin is a madman who thinks he can get away with anything. He can't.

And Poland can always go it alone if they feel this is a useful casus belli

We're not in the 18th/19th century where countries tore up treaties and stormed into neighbouring countries unilaterally. Anyway, why should Poland WANT a cause for starting a war? they've a long and unhappy history of wars stretching back centuries.

First of all, this may be news, but Russia already went and showed that nations can and do just that.

Second, if Poland takes this as an actual actionable act, they can wander on into Ukraine and help them if they so wish.

MollieMarie · 15/11/2022 20:19

Poland is quite a distance away from Kyiv, so were they aiming for Lviv?

Possibly....and where this missile debris has fallen then brings into play one possibility (and this is speculation) that we can't discount what has happened is the result of a Ukraine S-300 Surface to Air Missile engagement.

Looking away?

We haven’t been looking away. We’ve been refusing to fuel the whole thing.

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2022 20:25

Looking at recent photos of Putin I don't think he'll be around much longer.

Except that's what Putin did.

Venetiaparties · 15/11/2022 20:25

Of course this might be Putin's last dance, and he knows the game is up, now it is a salvage situation and he uses the 'accident' as an excuse to come to the table in the name of saving the world from mutual destruction......(I am trying to be optimistic)

This incident will not lead to the Kremlin concluding that they can get a way with a nuclear strike. For Gods sake. Please try to exercise some rationality.

Liebig · 15/11/2022 20:27

No one is going nuclear on this. But NATO has to address it.

Exactly.
So have Russia, though.
I’d say no one ( Barring Putin) has the stomach for another WW.

The losses Russia had in WW2 were phenomenal.
Quite shocking.
The average Russian is unlikely to want to be fighting in Putin’s war.
Nor will Russian mothers be wanting to lose their sons.

War has no real winners.
Jaw jaw, not war war.

Negotiations are better than unleashing hell.

I am sure they will, in a rational, fact based and proportionate manner. That will clearly upset some of the more excitable posters on this thread.

This.

NATO are hardly all going to tear up the protocols, change personalities and start falling into elephant traps at this stage in the game.

Itstheimplication · 15/11/2022 20:30

I wonder if the people calling for what is essentially World War III would be so enthusiastic if it were their loved ones who would be sent to deal with it…

Is there not a bad straight to tv action movie you can amuse yourself with instead?

Russia has denied statements from Polish media outlets and officials that Russian missiles fell on the Polish village of Przewodó near the Ukrainian border.
The Russian ministry of defence posted on its Telegram, calling the reports "a deliberate provocation in order to escalate the situation".
"No strikes were made against targets near the Ukrainian-Polish state border by Russian means of destruction," the statement said.It said missile fragments from the scene, reportedly filmed by Polish media, did not relate to Russian weapons.

Greenshake · 15/11/2022 20:31

@workiskillingme 👏👏👏

Zanatdy · 15/11/2022 20:31

My nephew is in Poland, for a few weeks. His mother is Polish, not near the border though at least. What a nightmare this all is

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 15/11/2022 20:31

Except that's what Putin did

Putin thinks that by invading Ukraine he's taking back something that's rightfully Russia. To him it's not another country.

Itstheimplication · 15/11/2022 20:31

I also disagree with those saying if NATO don’t escalate Putin will think he can get away with pushing harder. I think this will serve as a warning to him. Doesn’t mean that not acting this one time means they won’t act if it happens again…
