How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

There is so much misogyny around this. Georgina Baillie was treated appallingly by the press but people still refer to this through the lens of the impact on on her grandfather.

RB made aggressive and highly sexual remarks to female journalists live in interviews but was only sanctioned when he offended a man.

(Yes, I know GB was part of the ofcom deliberations)

Also well done Kathryn Ryan.
She is a star.

Yes she is amazing and has been so humbly quiet through his convictions. I’d have been like TOLD YOU!!!!

ABSOLUTELY THIS

I dont think JR's career has ever fully recovered from it. He is never going to become 'establishment'.

There does seem to be a change in who and what is seen as acceptable. TV has changed a lot. There seems to be a lot less 'rent a gob' TV. Maybe it is just what I watch but we seem to have more knowledgeable hosts rather than just hosts there to look nice and be vacuous.

That nobody was prepared to be a character witness for RB says a lot.

Laura Brand, now what's wrong with her? Why's she stuck by the fool?

There’s a separate thread for her. Two threads actually

That silly cow has been defending him on social media. She said he treated her respectfully

shes a numpty

Money.
JR could still make them money and was the more “salvageable”.
I have always detested JR ever since this incident and never watch anything he is in.
RB always gave me the nadgers and I never found him funny at all.
JR disguised his slime slightly better.

I dont think she will for long. I dont see RB getting preferential treatment. He will be moved around the prison estate to wherever there is space. She will get tired of visiting him very quickly. Now she is no longer under his control 24/7 she will break free.

RB's life is going to get very small. She will soon tire of his whinging about scratchy sheets or who he is having to share a cell with.

Tired of hearing about the 'culture of the time', it wasn't the 1950s FFS. Also, what has really changed for women anyway? They have just cancelled MAFS due to rape allegations, absolutely nothing has changed in the entertainment world for women.

He got away with this appalling behaviour because his face fitted - what he subjected Andrew Sachs to was unforgiveable

Georgina said that her grandparents blamed her for the whole thing, not those two twats.

Dappy777 · Today 08:38

JR's behaviour was repulsive. He reminded me of some vile kid at school who hasn't got the guts to bully someone himself, but stands in the background egging the bully on (while pretending to be the victim's friend).

At the time I loved the years from about 1997 to 2010, I was loving life, loved the TV, the music, films, everything. It felt like such a positive, exciting time in this country.

BUT I look back now and realise how horrible so many aspects of those years were.

The Lad/Ladette culture of those years was particularly toxic. It meant women accepted mysogny from men because it was "cool" to be like men - Trinny leaning in to that vile comment from Brand mentioned upthread is a classic example.

It's like realising you have been gaslighted to see things that at the time you laughed at, engaged with and accepted as normal, fun, harmless were anything but.
Is it just me or does anyone else relate?

Does anyone remember Trinny and Susannah on the Jonathan Ross show with Russel Brand I think. Before T and S came on, JR introduced them and RB said he would ‘do’ Trinny if she had a paper bag over her head. Trinny came on wearing a paper bag. It was all so nasty. I thought then that Trinny and Susannah should have walked off the set.

😱

No! That's awful! Why was she to blame?

Bobcurlygirl · Today 08:40

Exactly... Can't stand either of them. Watching JR with his daughter, who look quite gentle, even slightly vulnerable, how can JR sit there playing the family man after playing such "jokes" on someone else's daughter/granddaughter.
How can she respect her father for playing such a "prank" on Sachs? I use the word prank loosely.

To wonder how Vernon Kay got away with it? | Mumsnet https://share.google/rOVJdGCnLvJHFpQxx

This thread talks about Kay.

There's another somewhere about him being disrespectful to the women on his show but passed away as banter.

I read that after the TV show recording where Katherine Ryan told RB to his face he was a predator (or words to that effect) that he was not booked on mainstream tv again, apart from Celebrity Bake Off. She was brave and brilliant.

She was indeed.

But can we also acknowledge Danni Minogue, who publicly described Brand as a vile predator as far back as 2006?

Agree , it's horrifying to realise people like Danni were speaking up then and noone listened!

There’s often nostalgia threads re 90s but I agree it was very lad culture and I’m glad it’s being exposed.

I didn’t know that Trinny story and it’s so degrading for her. It makes me even more glad Brand has been convicted finally and can repent at leisure.

BendoftheBeginning · Today 08:45

AInightingale · Today 08:17

A lot of people at the time didn't take the incident seriously. I think this may have been because the Daily Mail pushed the story hard and encouraged people to complain to the BBC. It was dismissed in some quarters as a manufactured outrage being driven by sanctimonious people on the right. I don't really understand why, because it was a gross, shockingly cruel thing to do. (A bit like Brand and his pet dog, there is a definite vein of psychopathy there.)

JR's two daughters strike me as being very troubled and messed-up young women, and I wonder if it's got something to do with having such a foul-mouthed pig of a father who moved in such dodgy circles. Surely you would like your father to be a decent, kind man that you could look up to.

I think you’ve made a good point here. I think most people thought the segment was distasteful when/if they heard about it, but for most the first they knew was when the Mail started it’s predictable DEFUND THE BBC!!! shouting over it. That turns a lot of people off immediately, because it makes the story less about what happened and more about political tribalism.

It’s like when a rape happens and a left wing female journalist in the Guardian shouts RAPE CULTURE, all the right wingers switch off and sneer about moany feminists and how men can’t even flirt these days without being accused of something. Tribalism basically lobotomises people and shortcircuits their morality.

Men forgot, a lot of women didn't. Men and boys clubs control the media still. I dont think ppl who put him on shows are women...

Nonsense. At least for the BBC. For a kick off the female controller of radio 2 at the time resigned over the incident
