How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

I have no idea. I looked it up the other day and JR seemed very much to blame. He wasn’t just caught up in the situation.

FedAndWatered · Today 07:11

Agree. How has he come out of this without being tainted?

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · Today 07:14

Well he lost out big time with being forced out of the bbc I’d guess (hopefully!) What they did was utterly deplorable but thinking of it at the same time as one of them is found guilty of all he’s done doesn’t make sense imo

I think it does. The fact that he thought that was not only acceptable but funny tells you who he is. Why is that commercially viable?

They were just assholes pandering to an asshole cohort of people- I don’t understand any scuzzy comedy or comedy that’s filled with slagging people off/ cursing continuously but it wouldn’t be there if people didn’t buy into it

Frrrout · Today 07:22

I watched the Russell Brand Dispatches show two nights ago and thought exactly the same thing.
Mind you I’ve always found him loathsome so it’s easy for me to think that.
I can’t decide if in years to come he will also be under scrutiny for the same thing, or if he’s a simpleton who went along with Brands’ crap on air because he thought it made him edgy - something he is decidedly not.

Pocushocuspocus · Today 07:22

Reading the internet it seems RB incident came after he asked, on TV, if David Cameron wanked to Margret Thatcher and told Gwyneth Paltrow he would fuck her, again on his show.

thebrowncatisback · Today 07:23

I often think this. I guess he just went to ITV and got his own chat show there and has since kept a clean slate

LumberPainJackie · Today 07:24

Men forgot, a lot of women didn't. Men and boys clubs control the media still. I dont think ppl who put him on shows are women...

This type of humour was a thing during that era, we sometimes forget. They went too far on that particular occasion. But it wasn’t live, was it? The production team had okayed it. Imagine the laffs with the boys behind the scenes... Until it bit them on the arse!

WhereAreWeNow · Today 07:30

I was saying this to DH yesterday. That incident said so much about both of them. Not saying JR is guilty of the same crimes as RB but it suggests quite a nasty side to his character and a wild lack of judgement.
I was also thinking how humiliation is a theme in lots of these RB incidents. He seems to really enjoy humiliating people - mainly women but also Andrew Sachs. What a vile character he is.

Ishouldhavelistenedtomymum · Today 07:31

I think one of the issues is that such a huge fuss was kicked up about it that the pendulum started to swing the other way and people started to have sympathy with them.

It was in appalling taste and whoever aired it made a grave error of judgement too.

Cyclebabble · Today 07:35

I think the warning signs were and are there on Ross and a number of others. The next year could see a lot of media stars come crashing down.

CareerHelpAt53 · Today 07:38

I asked this back when JR was on Celebrity Traitors season 1… I think he’s disgusting 🤮 - at best an enabler of RB - and I do not want to see him on my TV.

Vintlet · Today 07:38

Does anyone remember Trinny and Susannah on the Jonathan Ross show with Russel Brand I think. Before T and S came on, JR introduced them and RB said he would ‘do’ Trinny if she had a paper bag over her head. Trinny came on wearing a paper bag. It was all so nasty. I thought then that Trinny and Susannah should have walked off the set.

I wondered about this too, which obviously doesn't make him guilty...

I don't think we can compare a prank call (stupid and offensive) with multiple counts of sexual assault and rape?

There's a big difference between being a twat and a rapist.

I agree but I also can see that it’s part of a culture and I don’t think that can be totally ignored.

Wildfairy · Today 07:46

I was waiting for someone to get het up about this.

as much as it was abhorrent , people need to remember the culture at the time was very different, he apologised , it was pre recorded not live, and the producers deemed it fit to go out, which tells you something about the culture at the time, it doesn’t make it ok, it simply contextualises it. They went too far.

it in no way compares to Russel being a rapist and sexual abuser and this is unlikely to be something Ross knew at the time, he would have known he was a complete shagger though, and the relationship with Sachs granddaughter was completely consensual

I think so, especially with that other high profile male media star court injunction…

Traditional media stars are a thing of the past now, with social media. Young folk like to see Influencers as peers almost, not more powerful or star-quality than themselves. The game has changed. There will be a clear-out.

ListenToAlfDubs · Today 07:51

I thought the same when JR turned up on Traitors and everyone was falling over themselves about him.

Flomingho · Today 07:52

Teflon coated. They should have both been cancelled after their appalling behaviour and Jonathan Ross even more so as a father of daughters.

I wish she hadnt have done that. She could have suggested he would need a bag of his own or a wash

I guess they assumed it would be edited and toned down! Why wasn’t it? Nuts

Smittenkitchen · Today 07:56

I listen to his podcast with his daughter, which I really enjoy. From listening to that it seems like he's not someone with huge amounts of empathy. I don't think he's a bad person but he's not very sensitive and has a sense of humour that a lot of the time I think he has to keep in check to be acceptable. He was sort of easily led by RB and enthrall to him as many people were but he really should have known better. He can't be equated to RB though, he's not a predator.
