How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

OP posts:

We talked about this yesterday and my memory of it was that JR apologised fulsomely at the time. Still made me realise he was not the cheeky chappie, quick witted cultural figure that he had been presented as but a nasty, cruel ‘just a bit of fun, can’t you take a joke ? ‘ type. Haven’t been able to bear him since.

I never watched JR again after that broadcast. Had started to dislike RB anyway, but the incident was so horrid to listen to it switched me totally off the pair of them.

Does anyone remember Trinny and Susannah on the Jonathan Ross show with Russel Brand I think. Before T and S came on, JR introduced them and RB said he would ‘do’ Trinny if she had a paper bag over her head. Trinny came on wearing a paper bag. It was all so nasty. I thought then that Trinny and Susannah should have walked off the set.

That’s what would probably happen now. But back then… I think it was brave of a certain female comedian to call him out. Even though she was hassled to name him, she did say - look, I could lose my career. But she was part of the change in culture with this, by just even challenging it. We’ll see more being pulled up.

Cusstardy · Today 08:01

It’s obviously not comparable to rape but actually many people thought at the time it was appalling. I have never watched either of them since the incident. Gross misogyny and cruelty.

Apparently RB later paid for Georgina’s rehab/therapy after the incident derailed her life. JR didn’t manage that and plays on the image of him as a doting dad and family man.

Flipperthepriest · Today 08:05

He didn't have to come back from it because it never made him go away. I think the distinction is important.

Which is a mixture of it being a product of the culture at the time, not going that far over what was considered acceptable, JR apologising very fulsomely plus Andrew Sachs clearly wanting to put it all behind him, and him being too big to be brought down. Also because the media started circling, some people didn't like that either as pretty much always happens when they have the bit between their teeth- some people react against the reaction.

I read that after the TV show recording where Katherine Ryan told RB to his face he was a predator (or words to that effect) that he was not booked on mainstream tv again, apart from Celebrity Bake Off. She was brave and brilliant.

I listen to his podcast with his daughter, which I really enjoy. From listening to that it seems like he's not someone with huge amounts of empathy. I don't think he's a bad person but he's not very sensitive and has a sense of humour that a lot of the time I think he has to keep in check to be acceptable. He was sort of easily led by RB and enthrall to him as many people were but he really should have known better. He can't be equated to RB though, he's not a predator.

That's interesting I listen as well ,can you give any examples ?
From listening to it he seems like a devoted family man ,constantly referencing his wife in the highest terms and their life and talking about his children.

forceofhabitandnotneed · Today 08:10

I'm continually surprised that JR came back from it. He's someone who seemed to change when 90s lad culture kicked in - the constant sex references and the leeriness towards female guests wasn't really there prior to that, IIRC (or at least not to the same extent).

One of the most depressing aspects of Sachsgate (apart from the incident itself) was the number of apparently liberal/left-wing people who sided with him and Brand simply because it was the Daily Mail that was leading the charge against them. I even saw a few comments suggesting that Andrew Sachs had no real grounds for complaint because his portrayal of Manuel was a racist stereotype!

Agree

I’ve often wondered why Classic FM ever gave him a slot - he’s been with them for some years now.

I think one of the issues is that such a huge fuss was kicked up about it that the pendulum started to swing the other way and people started to have sympathy with them.

It was in appalling taste and whoever aired it made a grave error of judgement too.

The person who was in charge at the time was a woman.

How too is Vernon Kay on the air? That was asked the other day.

Wonder who the next celebrity to go down will be ?

Blueseaurchin · Today 08:14

I think it is all part of a culture where TV executives turned a blind eye and/or enabled to these men's behaviour because they were bringing in money/viewers and also the wider widespread misogyny of the time.

I am really pleased that these days some of these creeps are finally being made to account for their behaviour and it looks like Brand is not going to be the last one...

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Today 08:15

I think JR needs to be held accountable for his actions.
Why is he still getting work?
Hopefully the tide will turn against him.

What is Vernon Kay’s backstory?

We have had a habit in the UK of downplaying everything. It’s always been seen as frightfully uncool to not take a joke or laugh along and it’s fed bullying and awful Sachsgate behaviour for years. Comes from stiff upper lip public school darkness which is rife in all top professions.

We’re swinging the other way now to bring professionally offended but I think I’d rather that than the old way….

Summerlovingtheraspberries · Today 08:16

Also well done Kathryn Ryan.
She is a star.

He'd be very upset if someone did that to his daughter, yet he did it to someone else's. Apparently according to a poster on another thread, he got upset when people were making fun of his daughter's outfits.

AInightingale · Today 08:17

A lot of people at the time didn't take the incident seriously. I think this may have been because the Daily Mail pushed the story hard and encouraged people to complain to the BBC. It was dismissed in some quarters as a manufactured outrage being driven by sanctimonious people on the right. I don't really understand why, because it was a gross, shockingly cruel thing to do. (A bit like Brand and his pet dog, there is a definite vein of psychopathy there.)

JR's two daughters strike me as being very troubled and messed-up young women, and I wonder if it's got something to do with having such a foul-mouthed pig of a father who moved in such dodgy circles. Surely you would like your father to be a decent, kind man that you could look up to.

I wish she hadnt have done that. She could have suggested he would need a bag of his own or a wash

Agree, although it shows how bad show biz is that she did that.

I hope he remembers with the excess time to spare now in a cell how bad that was.

Sexual messaging to page 3 women.

Misogynistic comments on his radio show towards women on the team.

I was waiting for someone to get het up about this.

as much as it was abhorrent , people need to remember the culture at the time was very different, he apologised , it was pre recorded not live, and the producers deemed it fit to go out, which tells you something about the culture at the time, it doesn’t make it ok, it simply contextualises it. They went too far.

it in no way compares to Russel being a rapist and sexual abuser and this is unlikely to be something Ross knew at the time, he would have known he was a complete shagger though, and the relationship with Sachs granddaughter was completely consensual

There is absolutely no justification for this behaviour regardless of time, culture, weather, economics or any other excuse you want to proffer. "Het up" - you're a dick pandering idiot.

David Walliams hopefully - I can’t understand how he thinks throwing a tantrum will stop him being arrested.
I would not be shocked if some things came out about Noel Fielding.

I suppose the culture was very different when Dave Lee Travis was putting his hand up women's skirts, so that's alright then ...
