How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

How he was ever able to be on mainstream TV has always eluded me, but yes the “rent-a-gob” style was popular for a time. I watched his talk show a couple of times because the remote wasn’t handy, and remember him being outrageously rude to some guests and thinking it funny. It wasn’t.

It was the end of intelligent film discussion on TV when Ross, the gurning, sniggering imbecile took over from the knowledgeable, intelligent and Barry Norman on the long running “Film…” show. The rent-a-gob style also came at a time of great dumbing down at the BBC, so I suppose Ross was ideally placed.

Laura Brand, now what's wrong with her? Why's she stuck by the fool?

She’s in denial. When a family member of mine was arrested and charged with a sexual offence, we all went into shock and denial. He pleaded guilty in court. It’s still hard to believe what he did years later.

I would be interested in your thoughts on him getting together with his wife when she was 16 and he was 26?
Im not being antagonistic btw, just genuinely curious. That is predator behaviour to me.

Well since they are still married 38 years later it seems more like a love match to me. I think her opinion matters more than anyone on this forum.

I don't think we can compare a prank call (stupid and offensive) with multiple counts of sexual assault and rape?

There's a big difference between being a twat and a rapist.

True but there's a very uncomfortable clip of JR on a game show sat next to Lily Allen. He jokes he should swap places with her as she's sat next to Noel Fielding and RB and they will probably rape her (is basically what he says) Lily Allen looks absolutely mortified and given what we know now this strongly suggests at the very least that JR was good friends with RB and judging by these jokes somebody who knew full well what RB was like and continued to endorse him. We obviously can't tar him with the same brush but as a bare minimum he is one of many who endorsed this culture and allowed a rapist to hide in plain sight so I'm in no rush to watch anything he does now either.

Does anyone remember Trinny and Susannah on the Jonathan Ross show with Russel Brand I think. Before T and S came on, JR introduced them and RB said he would ‘do’ Trinny if she had a paper bag over her head. Trinny came on wearing a paper bag. It was all so nasty. I thought then that Trinny and Susannah should have walked off the set.

More fool trinny for going along with it and putting a paper bag over her head and encouraging the creeps.

Tired of hearing about the 'culture of the time', it wasn't the 1950s FFS. Also, what has really changed for women anyway? They have just cancelled MAFS due to rape allegations, absolutely nothing has changed in the entertainment world for women.

Yes this excuse is rolled out every time. It’ll be rolled out in the future for any abuse of women happening now. It’s glib and inaccurate.

Yes, "rent a gob" TV sums it up.

JR and Brand are just big mouthed bullies who people laugh along with in the hope that they won't get picked on next.

I can't bear comedians who pick on people either in the public eye or the audience just for cheap laughs.
Brand was never funny or clever, just rude, and he always looked like he needed a good wash.

I could never watch him without feeling icky inside, same with Savile back in the day.

And they are still married 38 years later.

Still married doesnt mean happily married, in an equal relationship, or that it wasnt a predatory move and she wasnt groomed?

Monty36 · Today 09:28

Puppylucky · Today 09:16

I agree with this. JR has an inappropriate (for today) sense of humour but is not a predator. He absolutely adores his wife and family and has been a key supporter of charities like Comic Relief. He is also extremely well respected and connected within the industry. I know that none of this is proof positive that there is no dark side but it seems highly unlikely.

He is an appalling man.

Ronaldos · Today 09:28

Johnathan Ross has put his head above the parapet in supporting women's rights to single sex spaces. He wrote a foreword in Graham linehams recent book

NOTANUM · Today 09:29

The culture was toxic back then but also relied on women’s support as much as men. I won’t name them but there are several Radio 2 presenters and podcasters who were also involved in driving the “banter” this way. Were they victims or enablers? They wouldn’t have had jobs if they’d had said “hang on lads, this is going too far”.

But the likes of Russell Brand and the other celeb being discussed now because of an injunction remind us that the predators were in another league that could hide because of that culture.

Would you feel the same if he was 24 and she was 14 when they met, out of interest. Or 20 and 10? If they were blissfully happy 40 years later?

Monty36 · Today 09:31

I do hope the BBC take a long look at why it is they seem to promote men who abuse within their fold ? Yet again, a complete creep who they championed and fawned over.
I suspect there will be more. But they must ask themselves why this happens.
Their lack of judgement over people is very worrying.

Oh well thats all right then as long as he doesn't want men in toilets he could say what he liked about and too women.

BadSkiingMum · Today 09:31

I remember not knowing what to think about that incident at the time. It was all just grim.

Brand was always utterly repellent to me and has now been shown to be a horrific predator, but it is quite interesting to note that it was actually Jonathan Ross who first brought Georgina Baillie into the prank phone call and turned it sexual, by shouting ‘He fucked your granddaughter!’.

Georgina Baillie’s performance persona was quite sexualised at the time (burlesque etc), which didn’t help her portrayal in the press. But it was Andrew Sachs who didn’t speak to his own granddaughter for years after the incident. Talk about shaming from those closest to you…It was all such a mess.

This article is quite interesting explaining the whole incident from Georgina Baillie’s point of view:

TIL that Jonathan Ross was 26 and Jane Goldman was 16 when they started dating. She was 18 when they married (they are still together).

Hmmm.

I think, as I said above, that those of us who grew up in the 70s, 80s were so immune to sexist behaviour because it was absolutely everywhere so we accepted sh*t we shouldn't have. That's the point of saying it was a different time.

My father, my brother, my uncles, my cousins - they were all sexist, mysogny was rife even in our homes and definitely at school.
At my secondary schools girls weren't allowed to do woodwork, DT or metalwork fgs, only Needlework, Art or Home Economics.
PE was always segregated, boys had far more opportunities for sports teams, fixtures, adventurous trips. Girls were overlooked.

When you grow up like that you don't challenge things, you accept things that now you see are so wrong.

I remember that

I remember thinking I just don’t understand why anyone puts up with this
I tend to imagine that they planned jokes behind-the-scenes but I can’t see why anyone would be okay with it

I never understood how JR got away with stuff, he should’ve got the boot as soon as the David Cameron thing happened probably before I don’t know what the timeline is

I haven’t watched him for years and years because he just is so unpleasant he makes me really uncomfortable

I think the warning signs were and are there on Ross and a number of others. The next year could see a lot of media stars come crashing down.

I agree that there’ll be a lot of (mostly) male ‘celebs’ having many sleepless nights these days!
Unfortunately there’ll also be a plethora of their co-workers who say ‘we all knew about this at the time’ so why weren’t they shouting about it then? Saving their own careers comes to mind!

shocking. I’m wondering when it was?

GnomeDePlume · Today 09:34

If you look at JR's TV appearances now he seems to be just a 'make-weight' on a few panel shows. I dont think he has the credibility to be chosen for a lead presenting role. I dont see him getting the Antiques Roadshow gig after Fiona Bruce.

The incident with RB was him trying to be 'down with the cool kids' except by that point RB was already not a cool kid.

At the time I loved the years from about 1997 to 2010, I was loving life, loved the TV, the music, films, everything. It felt like such a positive, exciting time in this country.

BUT I look back now and realise how horrible so many aspects of those years were.

The Lad/Ladette culture of those years was particularly toxic. It meant women accepted mysogny from men because it was "cool" to be like men - Trinny leaning in to that vile comment from Brand mentioned upthread is a classic example.

It's like realising you have been gaslighted to see things that at the time you laughed at, engaged with and accepted as normal, fun, harmless were anything but.
Is it just me or does anyone else relate?

No. I hated the appearance of these subcultures at the time and view it, along with globalism, Blair, neoliberalism etc, as part of the degeneration of our culture. All flash, papering over cracks, a rather disgusting ‘style’ over substance. Maybe the more sober small-c conservative elements of British culture, grounded in reality, should be listened to more often instead of the trend-hoppers all the time?

topcat2014 · Today 09:34

I refuse to believe anyone in the media is what they seem. A friend went to antiques roadshow and even Fiona Bruce was a bit rude..

While everyone else was watching edgy stuff by RB, I think I was watching Dinnerladies or Ab Fab.

Sometimes it's a blessing to be middle of the road.

I had that in the 80s.
