How did Jonathan Ross come back from the Russell Brand/Andrew Sachs thing?

Quite apart from Russell Brand hiding in plain sight, how did Jonathan Ross ever work again?

I honestly have no idea, it still baffles me, maybe he was also contracted to ITV for his chat show, but Russel Brand went on to Hollywood afterwards so it didn't do him much harm either.

I have no idea. I looked it up the other day and JR seemed very much to blame. He wasn’t just caught up in the situation.

Yes he was egging RB like he wanted to be seen as "the cool uncle" or something.

Absolutely insane isn't it! In this instance, Jonathan Ross was actually the instigator of the phone call made to Andrew Sachs 🤷.

Gengha · Today 08:48

I’ve always found him icky given he married a 17 year old when he was 10 years older

PinaColada24 · Today 08:50

I’m sure JRs wife 16 when he started dating her? He was 26.

At the time I loved the years from about 1997 to 2010, I was loving life, loved the TV, the music, films, everything. It felt like such a positive, exciting time in this country.

BUT I look back now and realise how horrible so many aspects of those years were.

The Lad/Ladette culture of those years was particularly toxic. It meant women accepted mysogny from men because it was "cool" to be like men - Trinny leaning in to that vile comment from Brand mentioned upthread is a classic example.

It's like realising you have been gaslighted to see things that at the time you laughed at, engaged with and accepted as normal, fun, harmless were anything but.
Is it just me or does anyone else relate?

Yes I completely get this. I thought this about Soccer AM the other day. I watched from the age of about 7 or 8 and just thought the Soccerette feature where they cheered single women and boo'd married women was normal.

JR has always been someone who laughs at people rather than with people. He tends to makes jokes at other expense for his own enjoyment. My brother always found him funny and watched his show when we were younger and still lived with our parents. I always felt uneasy watching and can clearly remember becoming aware of this slightly different approach towards his guests.I stopped watching after than, teenage felt he was creepy. Not necessarily malicious with intent, but certainly has a mean streak and only apologies if caught and pulled up for his behaviour. He’s sorry for being caught, not sorry for what he did as that’s his nature.

Amberlynnswashcloth · Today 09:00

I was just watching that back and thinking the same. (Because of the trial the algorithms are throwing me all these old clips)

Proven sexual assaults aside, his behaviour over the years has been appalling: exposing himself, urinating in front of people and the footage of him in the street peeing and chasing the bystander. No idea what that was about but it was clear that the man was not consenting to be a part of it. RB has no respect for anybody's boundaries.

Brand is like Saville in the sense that his behaviour was so overt and outrageous that people just didn't know what to make of it and laughed it off thinking surely he's joking as nobody could be that vulgar and actually mean it!

(His poor children though - imagine that being your dad!)

LlynTegid · Today 09:02

I don't know who has been the sponsor of the Jonathan Ross show recently, but I wonder if they should be contacted to ask they don't do in future.

And of course, don't watch his show. Low ratings will end a show.

LancashireButterPie · Today 09:06

He has friends in high places doesn't he. Simples.

Does anyone remember Trinny and Susannah on the Jonathan Ross show with Russel Brand I think. Before T and S came on, JR introduced them and RB said he would ‘do’ Trinny if she had a paper bag over her head. Trinny came on wearing a paper bag. It was all so nasty. I thought then that Trinny and Susannah should have walked off the set.

What an absolute C.

and now he's 'found Jesus' 🙄

BrandiedAromatics · Today 09:12

Thanks for many of the insights on this thread. I have also wondered, for years, how many thought it was all right to continue to promote JR. I quoted on another thread how Davina McCall had said at the time they were just "silly boys". Many people in the "celebrity world" downplayed it.

I always put it down to JR's annual party. It was a celebrity wish to get an invite. I can remember making a mental note of those who were pictured attending after the disgraceful Sachsgate. I didn't listen to Desert Is Discs for years because Kirsty someone went to the party.

We need to hear the allegations against David Walliams - it is in the public interest to support those who have been harmed.

Monty36 · Today 09:13

He never has in my eyes. I loathed them both after that phone call. And maintained that loathing. Awful people. Both.

You were a child but I was a full grown adult.

However, I grew up in an era where boys at school "pinged" girls bra straps, made vile sexist comments regularly and even felt us up to see if we were wearing sanitary pads then made jokes about us being "on the blob".
We laughed along with it, thought it was "normal", would never have complained about it & wouldn't have been listened if we had. So I think we didn't see the toxicity of the late 90s/2000s for what it was at the time because male privilege, mysogny etc was just ingrained in us, almost part of our DNA.

I am glad my daughters are young adults in a very different time & would speak up about things I wouldn't have.
Still a long way to go though and the rise of incels and the manosphere is a worrying trend that I hope gets stamped out.

I listen to his podcast with his daughter, which I really enjoy. From listening to that it seems like he's not someone with huge amounts of empathy. I don't think he's a bad person but he's not very sensitive and has a sense of humour that a lot of the time I think he has to keep in check to be acceptable. He was sort of easily led by RB and enthrall to him as many people were but he really should have known better. He can't be equated to RB though, he's not a predator.

I agree with this. JR has an inappropriate (for today) sense of humour but is not a predator. He absolutely adores his wife and family and has been a key supporter of charities like Comic Relief. He is also extremely well respected and connected within the industry. I know that none of this is proof positive that there is no dark side but it seems highly unlikely.

I really relate to this.

FHM projected Gail Porter’s naked body onto the Houses of Parliament without her permission for goodness sake.

Oh God, I had forgotten the "Lad's mags"!

That was despicable.
Can you imagine that happening today??

WinterKitchen · Today 09:17

@cloudtreecarpet God I was only thinking about that the other week when we had a tour of our old school. "Sally's on the jam rag". I pulled up one of the boys on Facebook about bullying and he said it was just young lads having banter.

I was saying this to DH yesterday. That incident said so much about both of them. Not saying JR is guilty of the same crimes as RB but it suggests quite a nasty side to his character and a wild lack of judgement.
I was also thinking how humiliation is a theme in lots of these RB incidents. He seems to really enjoy humiliating people - mainly women but also Andrew Sachs. What a vile character he is.

Also a theme of David Walliam's humour on Little Britain, which I couldn't bear to watch.

I wonder if that's a thing among sex predators?

Also well done Kathryn Ryan.
She is a star.

If you think people who make jokes about disabled children are stars.. I personally don't.

And Walliams' behaviour on The X Factor when he would camp it up and behave sexually towards Simon Cowell used to make me want to vomit.
I used to watch it with the kids & they loved Walliams at the time because of his books but I just found him creepy and odd.

LetMeGoogleThat · Today 09:22

He hid for a bit, then sulked off to ITV. He was just lucky that Brand was already revelling in being a sex obsessed pig, and that gave him an opportunity to fade into the background of the scandal. While Brand ran off to the US.

I would be interested in your thoughts on him getting together with his wife when she was 16 and he was 26?
Im not being antagonistic btw, just genuinely curious. That is predator behaviour to me.
